Advice on using clutch

Hi guys. I’ve been racing with a wheel for the last few years, but changed to a controller recently. It sure is something to get used to, but I’m slowly getting there. Started now to get rid of assist one by one. Anyway, while following some ghosts I’ve noticed gear changes are"faster" with clutch, so wish to practice that. So my question is this, which buttons are best to map for this and is it like in real life where you use clutch with every change, up and down. My gears are currently mapped “B” for up and “A” for down. Thanks.

Most people use B for gear up, X for gear down, and A for clutch. It’s contoller setup 1, with handbrake and clutch swapped.
That way you can hold your thumb over A+B for gear up and A+X for gear down. Takes a little getting used to, but a couple of weeks practice it’ll be second nature. lol
Also you can either push down on the buttons together, or slide your thumb across them A>B, A>X. There are a couple of good video’s on youtube about this;

Super GT knows what he’s talking about when it comes to Forza so it’s worth a watch! :slight_smile:

I have it set up as A clutch, B shift up, X shift down. It’s easy to hit clutch and shift at the same time with a little practice.
I have thought about putting shift up on LB and shift down on RB and clutch as B. Has anyone tried this setup?

I use shift up on the LB and down on the RB with the Clutch as A.

It is really easy and actually seemed abit more intuitive for me than the A+B,A+X. I would miss the shift button once in a while when I used that style.

Thanks Mitch & SS, got rid of all assist now except ABS (on race cars TC still used) so gonna give it a go this weekend. Thanks for the help.

FA - the one car assist I wouldn’t switch off on FM2/ 3/ 4 was the ABS - funnily enough I turned it off on FM6 and have not been locking up any more than I was with it on.

I think this game trains you to be a lot smoother with inputs - as the tire temps go up so quickly if you’re not smooth on either accel or decel once you’ve got used to that, you can switch off ABS without too many traumas.

Hi D. Thanks for your advice, appreciate that. I’ve chased a few of your ghosts, think on LimeRock and Hockenheim short in B but you keep on outbreaking me. I’m working on loosing ABS, but without it I keep on locking the breaks. I’m still using the original deadzones on the controller settings which is very “sensitive” for my dumb fingers, so will surf the forum to see what the guys suggest for that. Thanks again for helping.

hey there FA, I noticed that you’re a dedicated FM3 player as well. Would you say FM3 is better than FM4? In my experience, jumping from Fm to FM 4, in a factory car in say classes up to A, that FM3 is much better overall than FM4.

And I’m stating it from a “jump straight into the game” approach, not with any assists or tweaks made to enhance the gameplay.

Just a personal ask, nothing more… Cheers mate.

No worries FA - to be honest, my deadzones are still bone stock too.

Always seemed like a lot of hard work to figure them out, so just adjusted my driving style to using very little travel on the triggers for braking/ first phase of acceleration. Smooth is quick or it seems to be on this game - been pleasantly surprised how often I can sneak in to the top 100 on tracks. It’s either that or all that practice on the KOTT challenges on FM4 finally paid off!
