"On Its Own Merit" - Review Request From Experienced Players

Hi there,

I see a lot of negative reviews for this game from players, saying that the prize boxes, homologation, and tiers make the game not worth buying. Usually these critical points are coupled with a reference to a previous Forza Motorsport or Horizon game. I am not familiar with any previous Forza titles, so I would not be able to fully grasp the concepts of their arguments. Can anyone provide their opinion of the game on its own merit without references or comparisons to previous Forza titles? Thanks. One negative feature that I’m trying to avoid is farming.

Don’t bother with the boxes and the fist issue is solved. I’m not seeing game breaking or necessary content locked behind them.
Homologation seemed like a good idea to even the playing field until you realise there’s 1 or 2 cars that leave the others in the dust, (and you’re sad when it isn’t the car you want to drive),
To me, career mode is just pre-designed races with little freedom that I don’t enjoy as much, freeplay is what I like about FM7, making custom races with cars I want to drive and how I want to drive them (upgrades and tuning).

I am having a blast with FM7 using a wheel.
With sim steering, I’m enjoying driving as much as I do in a sim racing game like Assetto Corsa.
With normal steering, I’m enjoying it as much as the races in simcade games like The Crew/Forza Horizon 3.

Jumped into homogolated multiplayer a few times, but there’s this clear separation of players who drive a certain car, and everyone else.
Went back to clearing career mode for the time being.

It all depends on what you are looking to get out of this game. For me, I really enjoy the game. All I want out of it is a large car & track selection, great driving dynamics and taking photos. And recently hotlapping through community events. This game does all of that well, so naturally I like the game a lot. Oh and it looks stunning on the One X in 4k HDR.

A lot of the gripes with the game are changes made from previous games. Since you haven’t really played previous titles they may not apply to you. But again, it’s all up to what you want out of the game, then we can tell you what we think, from a calm neutral perspective of course.

Imo, great game. I really enjoyed the career. It made drive cars I wouldn’t have otherwise tried, some I didn’t care for, others I’ve grown quite fond of.

Freeplay is really good, can configure it almost limitless. By far one of the, if not the very best racing game for use with controller

IMO GREAT GAME!! I have most racing games available for PC and FM7 seems to be my fave coz my achievement progress in the others is abysmal, to say the least. Loot Crates only affect people if they want to have a gripe about something and not once have I had to get one I didn’t want. Homologation is fine if you can drive  and the more I use it the better I like it. Few areas I wouldn’t mind seeing a change of strategy with the implementation of a few events/features but none of those are deal breakers. I only had FM6 APEX and Forza Horizon 3 previously and I liked them too.

I could probably write a small novel about everything that’s wrong with FM7 if I really wanted to. But I’ll just mention by far the worst aspect here, the game’s performance. For a game that is advertised as being “4K 60FPS” it sure doesn’t like to run at 60 FPS. Frame drops are very frequent with this game regardless if it’s single player, multiplayer, or even the menus. I was recently in a 24 person private lobby just the other week where I legit was getting about 15 frames per second, and I can tell because it was dropping so low that the game looked more like a slide-show than a game. It also causes input lag as well which is mostly evident on bumpy tracks like Prague and Rio where many inputs and micro-corrections are required to drive cars to their limit. The other major fault is the general stability of the game itself, especially in multiplayer. This is caused by the fact that they decided to have the players and cars teleport from venue to venue before the start of each race, which means that the game has more opportunities to fail to load something properly and crash. It also makes selecting a car harder because now, while it’s loading a new location I have to choose a car that has to be 3D rendered at the same time, which makes an already unstable game even more unstable. So much so actually that there are times where I don’t even have enough time to choose a car in-between races because of it. I would consider it somewhat excusable if it ended up shortening the load times to the actual race itself, but it doesn’t. Oh, and speaking of the actual race itself, what can sometimes happen when the race does load is that not everybody will appear on everybody’s screens, or some people will start way ahead of others because the game, once again, had issues loading the track. They couldn’t even get Forzathon to work correctly the first time they put it in the game, because sometimes it would not award the car even if the player has completed all of the achievements.

To be as blunt as I can, if I was in charge of this game I would personally fire whoever’s made the decision to make these design choices. There’s absolutely no excuse for a high-profile developer to develop a game that runs as poorly as this.

I believe you’re lumping two different concepts together. If you were playing online and you’re seeing jumpy frames, the issue is likely network related. Lag, not frame rate.

While stability has been a problem (improved dramatically with recent updates), loading the next track in the background while players are still have access to lobby menus is indeed faster. Got into a similar discussion with a friend of mine, so I timed lobby return (the moment the lobby loads from the previous race) to next race start (the moment you can rev the engine) in FM6 and FM7. FM7 was significantly faster, in spite of the fact more lobby time was provided.

Personally this is my favorite Forza game so far, but I think most of that is because of how good I’ve gotten since buying it. If I was as good at 6 as I am at 7 I probably would’ve liked 6 much better. I also race GT cars almost exclusively and the GT cars are much more balanced thanks to homologation so that’s another big factor for me.

Yeah, the game does run horribly. Slow menus, garage freezes and crashes on occasion, lots of stuttering due to a thousand things trying to load at once, pretty much what McQueen said above me. But they’ve improved it (slightly) with the updates; at least it doesn’t dashboard me anymore.

Online is a circus as usual. Can’t really compare it to previous games cause it’s been the same in all of them. I’ve slowly moved towards hotlapping more than racing online.

Career is enjoyable, it’s the first one I actually completed.

Prize crates are ok with me. I make more credits than I know what to do with so I enjoy wasting some trying to get rare driver suits.

In short, I like the gameplay a lot, but there’s a lot of infrastructure issues. The game is worth $60 but no more than that, imo. I’m glad I didn’t get the ultimate edition this time around.

Are you playing on xbox or pc
There is a difference

I play on both and enjoy it on both and i have played every forza since the 1st as well…i play without comparing them and take each on its merits

My pc is below average and i just play at recommended settings without any issues like the others are describing

You dont need to use the loot boxes …i dont and wont buy them again until i have bought all the cars and have nothing else to spend credits on

Loot crates are a non-issue.

Contrary to what most say, you can and should buy mod crates. If you’re minimally skilled at the game, Master mod crates are best. When racing long events you’ll turn a HUGE profit because there are many really good cards with three uses and most of your prize money will be from the bonuses they give. Forza Edition cars are obsolete next to them.

Moreover, you can sell cards you don’t need and it’s possible to keep buying Master crates while still having a good amount of valuable cards in storage.

The best mod cards are those that give money obviously. Sell cars with requirements you don’t want to be forced upon. Exp cards become obsolete very quickly because you can get lots of experience points just from racing long events. Grid position cards should be used only in the hardest races of career mode and/or on street tracks, again only in career, because you can pick your starting position in Free Play so they’re useless there. Cards with only one use should be used only in Free Play, with long events.

Car crates on the other hand aren’t worth the trouble, though Rare and above cars are usually priced above the cost of the crate itself. Driver Gear crates are a waste but they’re cheap enough that they don’t pose a problem.

The homologation is unfairly criticized by people who have a shallow view of the game and thought everything would’ve been balanced from the get-go. Considering all cars run the same tire compound, power is limited and PI ceiling is very strict, any imbalances found in the game are much easier to balance than with the old system when you could run all sorts of things ranging from powerful cars with AWD to lightweight, grippy cars with race tires. One only needs to look at Horizon to realize how bad the old system was with regards to balance.

The crates got overblown due to unfortunate timing. They kinda got lumped in with the exploding loot crate furor when they’re not really anywhere near the same level as the nonsense that lit off that particular powder keg. They’re pretty useless and ignorable, overall. Maybe if you regularly do long races the mods may be worth getting, but they’re by no means required.

This.

While other games tied critical gameplay to loot crates, Forza 7 does not.

The only reasons to buy loot crates in FM7 is for unique driver gear or badges of which neither impact gameplay or for mod cards (see discussion above regarding race lengths and mod cards).

Homologation - perks are that in races you won’t have random cars that don’t belong in that race. Homologation also sets build limits which does keep some cars pretty balanced however weight limits are not set which causes issues for some divisions.

Note that some homologation divisions are dominated by 1 or 2 cars while others are a bit more open. Another thing to note is that some of the cars that may suck on most tracks may actually be good on a few tracks such as tracks that require a lot of speed or other with high grip.

Even though the leaderboards may say one thing, there are usually multiple options. Usually those options are a little slower. The leaderboards lie sometimes.

Tiers are a non issue. You’ll reach tier 5 and have access to all cars very quickly in the game. Note that there are about 90 or so cars that are locked and can only be attained via the specialty dealer, forzathons, various special rivals events, leagues, and other Forza events. This may be an issue if your favorite car is locked.

There are other locked cars that can be obtained for free by completing career championships and showcase events.

All the feedback above should give you enough to decide. Only thing I can add is if you’re by any chance from South Africa, chances are 90% that you won’t have excess to online play (hoppers and leagues). The answer as to why remain a mysterie. Online private lobbies work sometimes though.

Ok, I´ll try to make it short.

I´m a long term Forza-Guy (since Forza2) and always loved the series for every aspect.
I can live with these crazy boxes, they don´t bother me, I see no sense in buying them.
I am not happy that I can´t buy all cars but, ok, better than Unicorns which maybe will never ba accessible (like the Manta 400 in Forza6)

But 1 Thing that made me really really Sad is the fact that I can´t Hotlap anymore!
That was the main-Feature for me, The possibility that I can choose to Race WHAT I like, WHERE I like and in which Configuration (Class) I like depending on my mood.

Ok, Sometimes there are Events, like the Silverstone (S-Class) or Watkins Glen (A-Class) Event, but when they get Ended (like now) I really sit in front of the Game and nothing else really motivates me…
A Feature which seems to be gone forever, T10 doesn´t say anything about this and only a few People are complaining about… so sad.

Why cant you do that
Try free play you can set up what ever configuration you like

I’ve raced FM1-7 and Horizon 1-3. I like 'em all, FM7 the best.

What is “farming” in your context? Tedious and contrived races designed solely to accelerate earning credits? This is easy to avoid. Most players enjoy racing, and so we just race and earn credits, and buy the cars/tunes we want as we go. The game is well set up for this to be an incentive to race, to set mini-goals of earning enough to buy this or that next car.

I hear some users complain about the high cost of this or that favorite car, but mostly when they are at collector level 5 or earlier. Yes, your first several hours of racing you can feel budget constrained, if you have your heart set on getting your 10 favorite cars asap, but even that you can bypass by renting. I’ve not heard this as an issue from anyone past level 5, although online there have been some comments that, having paid cash dollars for the game, all 700+ cars should be instantly gifted with no need to play for in-game rewards or to wait for & play in special events.
