New to Forza, have a legitimate question on using other people's work

This is my first Forza game (as I play on PC) and I am really in awe of how awesome the painting options are in Forza! I started creating some really cool designs already! But one thing I would like to understand if why downloading vinyl group restricts my right to share. I think a better way would be that design automatically add the authors from the logos I downloaded as well as me for the design.

My point is, I have had a wonderful time recreating paints in the last few days, but no one is gonna see them because I just downloaded some logos instead of recreating them. I understand the part about protecting other’s work, but wouldn’t everyone benefit if we could share our work even when using other people’s work? I just don’t see the point in recreating the Brembo logo for the 1000 times when there are already hundreds of awesome looking one on the store.

Obviously, you guys are way more experienced then me, and maybe there is a reason for it.

What do you think?

I think you pretty much hit it when you mention protecting others’ works. Because painters and tuners actually earn in-game credits (compensation) for their shared works … is it fair for one person to profit from another’s work?

You concern is deeply understood, it would be benificial for the Original artist if Forza could track who made what and give them credits for their work. However, it doesnt work that way.
I see your point that more people out see another artists work if it could be shared by you.

It took me longer to design the Walt Disney logo than it did to make Minnie Mouse. And she took almost an hour. I’d be happy if people got to share my designs as long as I got my 100CR for it. But I would also want them to know I made it. How would they? Say for example you made a design with 100 vinyl groups made by other people, Forza would have to show the end user a list of 100 other peoples work, who gets credit for what so the End User would know where to get more of a certian type of art.

If you want to share designs, the only way would be to make it your own. However, on a lighter note, when you are racing your design, I can see it in race, so not all hope is lost. It just needs to be 100% original to share it.

Thanks for the in depth explanation. I agree with you, there would need to be a limit to the number of downloaded arts/logo you can use on shared design, but a simple way I had in mind : let’s say you limit it to 5 (so the names are easily seeable in the design info), and you make a scrollable menu to select the name of the contributing authors, and it zooms/highlight the vinyls on the car so you could know who did what!

Obviously, people could decide when creating arts if it would be resharable, giving the choice to players. It would have the advantage of making the art seen by more people, give more compensation, and (in my opinion), the biggest advantage, would also increase the number of design available drastically. There are probably a lot of people like me who aren’t necessarely at creating logos and arts, or have the time for it, but who are good at designing car paints and designs! I think the two are not mutually exclusive!

I didn’t even realize people were getting anything out of it other than sheer recognition. In that case, I understand where that could be a problem with some. My point was more to create an even bigger livery inventory by giving proper credits when using part of other people’s work, while avoiding to having to redo the (in my opinion) tedious work of redoing a logo just for the sake of being able to share it. On the other hand, I guess it also makes it much more rewarding to create a complete reproduction.

But in all honesty, it’s already awesome that I get to download logos from other to use them on my design, even if I’m (and the people playing online with me) will be the only ones to see it. It’s already much more in depth than any other game on the market.

I’m a painter as well. And here’s the simplest way to deal with it. The example you used of the Brembo logo is really an easy fix. Just copy the in game version onto the roof of a large car that doesn’t have a sunroof. Then just use circles or dots and squares and semi circles to “overdub” the original logo. You can do this with other peoples work as well, but make sure you download and also “like” the work so they at least get as much payout as possible for it. You probably wont copy it exactly but that’s okay, as subtle differences in the two works will help make it seem more like your own. If you want to give the original painter a credit, mention them in the description notes when you’re sharing it. As I’ve said in previous posts on this topic, when we make common logos, we’re reproducing copyrighted items as it is, which isn’t exactly legal either, and it’s only the fact that it spreads their brand around to a new and bigger audience, that we don’t all get sued. Old 70’s & 80’s race car liveries that involve cigarette sponsorship for example. What we all need to remember, and I’ve mentioned this before as well, is that we’re making livery designs for a video game, not re-painting the roof of the Sistine Chapel, or creating a new Mona Lisa, so maybe us painters also need to not get so wrapped up in our own self importance. The fact that someone thought our work was good enough to re-do (or, for want of a better term, steal), is gratitude enough.
