Got this little Thrustmaster Ferrari Wheel pedal combo for PC just to try and cost me 80 bucks AU new so I can call this a reasonable priced disaster, So on the upside, it is quite a nifty little unit and only got it to see if it is worth the big bucks on the gold plated one with the manual stick 3 pedals and coffee cup holder. I set it up in FM7 where I found it a bit jerky over sensitive and you only had to move the wheel an inch and you were at full lock. After much messing around and then the following instruction from a video I believe a member here has on YouTube it was a lot better including a clean fairly impressive time wise lap of Watkins Glen in the Beamer FE. Except one thing hasn’t changed and that is the animation of the wheel in cockpit view which is more distracting than you would think because of as much as you try to ignore it and go by the feel of the car you tend to overcompensate every now and then when it catches you. I will be clear it is usable… just. I thought maybe it was the fact it is a little el cheapo but it has become clear this is not the case. I have been messing with this for many hours and while making some progress it is still not desirable. I tested this in other apps as a guide or to see if this was across the board.
FM 6 - The default and I didn’t touch a thing. A lot better than 7 but I can see if I spent a little time it could be quite good still a little touchy but you would get used to it fairly quickly
Forza Horizon 3 - Did not work even with the registry key and tell you that you need a wheel controller. 2 hours trying to solve and gave up
P-Cars - Detected it and straight to test drive a little tweak and I was away. 5 mins max
Dirt 4 - Quick set up allocating buttons the rally tracks are a little brutal so a few extra tweaks and I was away about 8 min
The Crew Straight in one minute I was waiting for the load the next I was cruising the streets and out of all of them no setup or tweaking really needed and was most impressive in a game I probably use the least.
So am I missing something in FM7? and I noticed on the YouTube video that one of the settings had sliding scale 1 - 9’999’999’99 etc where on mine I see that on about 5 of them but figured, either way, it is 1 - 100 and this is a glitch.
I reckon if I ignore the wheel animation then I am close. Ever since I purchased an old Sega console with a racing game I have used cockpit view and can’t stand anything else so this is doing nothing for my OCD.
I’ve just purchased a Thrustmaster Ferrari F458 Spider Wheel for the XBox One. In the driver’s cup I’ve still to do 2 Elite Showcases - 300 miles at Sebring and 250 miles at Le Mans and I thought it might be easier on the fingers if I did them with a wheel. The default settings seem much too sensitive and any help on settings which do a reasonable job would be appreciated. Many thanks.
This wheel is not suited for Forza. It does not have Force Feedback and only 240 degrees of Rotation.
If you can return it, and get the TMX Pro Wheel setup with the 3 pedals you will be happy.
I received the Spider wheel last Christmas with Forza 6. After a little over a month’s use, the wheel would pull to the left on most right handed turns.
I quit using it and found a TMX Pro setup for $200. This wheel has 900 Degrees of rotation and is adjustable.
It is much better for Forza 6 and with Forza 7, it is almost perfect.
I’ve been using wheels since Forza 1.
The Microsoft FF wheel was a lot better than what the Ferrari Spider is.
So, you might be able to find one of the 900 degree wheels,“Used”, on Ebay or somewhere…
Thanks for the advice. I’ve had wheels in the past and have usually given up on them, preferring the controllers that came with the consoles.
The Thrustmaster didn’t cost me much and I’m not interested in setting good lap times. I just want a setup that is mildly useable and I probably need to spend time doing some research.
Just completed the 250 miles at Le Mans showcase using the normal controller which was a lot easier than I thought it would be and I’ll do the 300 miles at Sebring showcase tomorrow.
@OP and MSB: I have the TM Ferrari wheel (without FFB) for the 360. It runs off rubber bands that increase resistance as you turn and has a very low DOR. I keep mine around for 360 games like Forza 3 and 4. Still fun but not ideal. Higher class cars are way too twitchy to use it and be enjoyable. I’d recommend returning yours if you can and go for the lowest price FFB option which is probably the Thrustmaster TMX. Goes for around $150.
I have no issue getting another wheel and I also want the stick shift. This wheel does seem a little unruly in FM7 compared to all other racing games I have tried it in. Got my eye on the TMX Pro just need to confirm the TH8A shifter will play nice with it all
This was my result and I would not be blaming the wheel for the money it is very good in other driving games.
I have the wheel set up pretty good and there is a second cockpit view which does away with the arms and wheel however it gives you no mirrors. This will not work because given the Drivatar behavior I end up getting pushed sideways because I don’t see them coming. I have taken something away from all this and that is my Microsoft Xbox controller although calibrated correctly has shown me while using it my cars and in particular, the BMW FE has the turning circle of a tandem tipper. With the wheel, I must be getting 40 - 60 degrees a side extra. Not sure now if it is the sensitivity or the fact I have been missing a huge slice of turning ability and after a month of using the controller throwing the car into a full lock on a corner as I have done so many times will now put me into a wall or on the grass. Really noticeable on the first corner of Spa and same goes for Nurburgring (main testing tracks). Second cockpit view in test drive mode I am running around the track perfectly. 1st cockpit view with a second steering wheel out of sync and throwing me off balance, a grid full of cars and I would the worst driver in the history of motorsport.(excluding the Drivatars of course)
Now with a grand total of 12-16000 CR in the last 24 hours, I best be back on the Xbox controller and win a few races.
Regarding the sensitivity problem with the wheel. On FM7 I set it to 4. That is done local to the wheel and not in the game itself. See the instructions that came with the wheel. On FH3 I set the sensitivity to 1. Personally I would think the settings would be the same on both games but found it is not… which is strange. I use the default settings in both games. I use the XBOX One and not a PC so there may be differences but the local settings should work on which ever game platform you are using.
Thanks for the helpful reply. I did notice the sensitivity thing in the instructions and I’ll certainly be trying that out together with adjusting some of the in-game settings and seeing how the wheel performs with my other games.
This is the best advice I have received. With FH3 the wheel works perfectly out of the box and with FM6 and FM7 it’s fine on setting 4. As suggested in Thrustmaster’s instructions, I also used the wheel straight away from startup of the console - I didn’t connect my normal xbox controller at all in case there was a conflict. Came first in races on each version of the game.
Forza is built around game pad. Wheels will never work well and if they do you will ALWAYS be beat by someone using game pad. Wheels are for simulators. I have a 1400 dollar osw wheel. I know how immersive they are but when you cant beat a gamepad its time to conceid the fact turn 10 has never made wheels a priority. Has been the same for every release.
Hi there Blue028 I watched one of your vids on the Tube which was very helpful so thanks for that. It does appear to be more of a Forza issue with my wheel than the wheel itself. I am yet to try it in FH3 now I have the additional application so I can set it up. I purchased Assetto Corsa with the works and played with the setting for about 20 mins and it is probably the best of all as far as syncing with the wheel and my time was mainly to choose my preferred buttons and a minor tweak here and there. Loaded several cars from the standard to full race spec and if I moved the wheel an inch so did the wheel on screen and car went in the right measured direction. Accelerator, Brake(Inverted) and shifting all spot on. I haven’t given up yet but seems like T-10 could spend a bit of time looking at this if so many people like to use a wheel/pedal set incl. the fact it is a car racing game and all. Otherwise, MEDIC 1 might be right.
