Hey guys, so my folks got me a cheapo Thrustmaster Ferrari 458 wheel and Forza 7 this past birthday and I used it for a Forza Horizon playthrough and it worked great. No problems at all. Fast forward to Motorsport 5 and a brief trial run on 7 and this thing is just unplayable.
I’ve searched high and low here and on google and tried a lot of the different settings. Deadzones 0-100, deceleration 5 or 10-100. Normal, Simulation. I even tried tuning out the almost comical oversteer through Differential and Roll Bar settings but these high powered RWD cars are impossible to control. The slightest turn of the wheel sends pretty much every car flying off the track.
I plug my controller in and I’m back in complete control. I don’t want to give up on the wheel but I don’t know what else to do. Can anyone help?
Other than getting used to it theres not much that you can do. That wheel has a max dor(degrees of rotation) of 270 which means it requires very little travel lock to lock. Although i never liked using such a low dor i know many people who prefer to play forza this way because it allows a quicker response if things go wrong ie getting smashed in to in multiplayer. I would suggest turning on stability control only for now and just keep practicing, eventually youll get the hang of it. Also if you stick to race cars especially open wheel which have a similiar dor to your wheel they should actually be easier to drive.
You should try to see if you can take the wheel back and trade for a better one.
I use a Thrustmaster TMX Pro wheel which includes the 3 pedal setup. I got mine as an open Box, but new for only $170 last Feb.
Go to Thrustmasters websisite and check out their wheels. The TMX is set up with a computer and not the XBOX ONE.
Forza 7 is not perfect for wheels.
I’ve been racing with a wheel since 2005 with Forza 1
Good luck and Happy Racing!
I had that same wheel, and there is not really much you can do to adjust it. I ended up just adjusting my own turning ratio. Very small movement of your hands equates to big swings of the car, so you have to adapt. Almost any other wheel will be more fun, and be far more adjustable, but since you have that one, go with it and have fun. I tried that one due to a buddy’s recommendation, but replaced it after a year or so. I enjoyed using it more than struggling to finesse the throttle on the controller.
Presumably you’ve tried adjusting the sensitivity settings on the wheel itself (see the wheel’s instructions) - not within the game. Mine works fine without adjustment on FH3 but on FM7 I have to use sensivity level 4.
Some of my friends have the same wheel and whilst it was fun for a while, we’ve all stopped using it and prefer the controller or elite controller.
If you want to read other people’s comments there is a separate thread:
FM7 undoubtedly had some flaws when it was first launched but many of these have now been fixed. Some players with more expensive wheels still report problems. Of course there is one obvious difference between the Horizon series and the Motorsport series - Playground games, a British video game developer located in Royal Leamington Spa, England, United Kingdom and owned by American technology conglomerate Microsoft since 2018.
My wheel works o.k. with FM7 on sensitivity level 4, but frankly I get better lap times and results with a controller. I originally bought the wheel because I thought accelerating, braking, steering, manual clutch and gears may be a bit much for two hands and I wanted to try a set up with a wheel and pedals on a stand similar to a real car. I’m now trying a few different controller settings (layout number 8?) with acceleration on button A and brake on button X which may suit my fingers better.
There is a hint of a warning (Forza Motorsport 5) in the wheel’s instructions:
ADJUSTING THE RACING WHEEL’S SENSITIVITY IN GAMES
Your racing wheel offers four sensitivity levels:
1 = NORMAL (default), 2 = LOW, 3 = VERY LOW, 4 = MINIMUM
To adjust the racing wheel’s sensitivity setting, press the four following buttons simultaneously, then release them:
Lever DOWN (LB) + Lever UP (RB) + Button Y + Button B
(the racing wheel’s white LED flashes, according to the selected sensitivity setting)
Racing wheel sensitivity setting (LB + RB + Y + B) Flashing white LED
Sensitivity setting 1 = NORMAL Once
Sensitivity setting 2 = LOW Twice
Sensitivity setting 3 = VERY LOW 3 times
Sensitivity setting 4 = MINIMUM 4 times
When playing FORZA MOTORSPORT 5, we recommend using sensitivity settings 3 (very low) or 4 (minimum).
Note: changes made to the sensitivity setting are not saved, and must repeated every time you restart or disconnect your racing wheel.
Disconnect all controllers prior to connecting the wheel.
Power on the console using the XBOX button located on the console or the racing wheel.
(Do not power on your console using an Xbox controller, to avoid any conflict with the racing wheel!)
The white LED lights up automatically when your racing wheel powers up.
Adjust sensitivity level and start the game using the racing wheel’s buttons.
