Multiplayer without assists?

Hi everyone,

I’m new to the forum. I tried to search and find an answer to this but it’s not turning up for me.

Anyway, I like to drive with a few assists off. Braking, TCS, steering etc I like to bump up to a more realistic level. For me, it makes the game more challenging and therefore more fun.

Unfortunately, it also makes me slower. I haven’t mastered the cars well enough to race at the same speed I can with the assists on.

So I’d like to play multiplayer/league races more but I find a lot of the cars are using assists still. How can I set it to join a lobby where that is not allowed so I can race other racers who are in a similar skill level/situation as myself? Is this possible? I haven’t found any way to try different lobbies. When I select the game options of the lobbies I’ve joined, they always allow the assists.

It very well could be that I just stink at the game. I’m certainly no speed demon. Just looking enjoy the game best as possible. Right now I get wasted in all the races in multiplayer or league even if I don’t crash/spin out or otherwise do something that causes slower than my average performance

There isn’t a way to do this. Online it’s just perseverance because it is a test of patience more than a game most of the time. But that rare race which is good makes it worthwhile.

Alright there mate. you’ve come to a good place to get some help. I’m fairly new round here myself and new to online racing too. I find there are usually lots of people willing to help me get better at the game.

The best advice i could give you would be to point you in the direction of a thread in the Racer’s Lounge of the FM5 forums. I haven’t worked out how to do links but i can tell you it’s titled something like: “Jawshe’s seven tips to becoming a better Forza Motorsport player.” The original article is excellent and there are lots of good insights from other people underneath.

On the subject of assists it is generally thought to make you quicker in the long run not to use most of them. There are exceptions to this, there are a few top racers who run ABS. Regarding TCS, those who are fast who use it often only have it there as insurance to prevent a major spin out and spend most of the time handling the car as if it isn’t there. As an example I once watched VPR Rylaids on twitchTV racing 20 or so laps of Spa and the TCS only kicked in a handful of times.

From my own experience i can tell you that racing is a lot harder and different from hotlapping. There are lots of really good racers out there who get their Leaderboard times by running clean laps in online races. They have either been playing Forza for years or are just good! In racing you have to be good at running different lines around the track and find the right time to overtake holding the inside/outside line and have the experience to avoid collisions or recover from them quickly.

My only other advice is to try different tunes. There are lots of great tuners sharing their work. Find ones that suit your style and level of ability. Some of the RWD power tunes can be a bit hard to handle in my hands as i’m not that good. Get yourself a garage of cars you know well with a couple of cars/tunes you can use on several tracks and a few for specific tracks e.g. Indy/Daytona.

Keep on racing…

What Silver said AND unfortunately you cannot custom a public hopper or league lobby to your own preferences. You can set up a private lobby though with the mandatory restrictions you would like and then invite your friends to come and race with you.

With practice you can get faster without assists in most classes; I run with no assists and can podium/win plenty of races in the Hoppers.

ha ha, thanks everyone.

So basically what I’m hearing is

  1. I’m on the right track to being faster by going without the assists
  2. I still have a long way to improve

Thanks for your input.

Sounds about right! As another new player who’s wrestling with just how steep the learning curve can be on this game, let me encourage you to keep playing in a way that suits and interests you, and to keep having fun. In general, a good racer is a good racer; a skilled player without assists will generally outrace an inexperienced or careless player no matter what assists the latter is running. FM6 offers a lot of help, but at the core of it there is a real skill that you can cultivate.

I second the suggestion to find a private group of players–assists might be on or off, but you’ll be more likely to get people who are racing seriously and cleanly, meaning you can focus on your driving and not worry as much about being wrecked by some guy who decides to use you as an air brake. I race with a group from TVRF (The Virtual Racing Federation), and they’ve been very welcoming and helpful.

Good luck and enjoy racing!

I think no assists is faster not slower. TCS and STM are much more intrusive then previous games, in my opinion - I only use TCS in a handful of situations (such as a stock tuned F1) and if I forget to turn it off and get in car that I don’t use it on i am almost always slower. I’m not trying to start a TCS or not thread - just saying this iteration more then any others seems to reward no assists.

At OP - I wouldn’t worry about persons using or not - Unless your in SPEC race - cars/tunes/builds are different so what difference does it make if some one is using STM /TCS or ABS… Everyone’s handling is already different so its no worry one way or the other. Just race and get better - thats what counts not what view you are using or what assists you have on or not. Don’t let mechanics or prejudice ruin the game for you, if your slower it just means you may need to get better at race craft - or perhaps a car/build/ tune that matches the track - make it about your progress and learning not others or excuses. We don’t win them all.

Just a quick follow up I experimented with various assists on/off to get a little bit better fit for me personally. I still have lots to learn but I’m not doing so bad.

One thing also that I found is that online the Ghost races are a lot faster. When I started racing a normal League Session I found it was filled with guys more my level. Unfortunately it’s also mostly bumper cars usually but oh well lol.
