I'm new to Forza (NFS player).... Driving physics seems super weird and annoying

I hate to be that guy, coming over from another game platform and criticizing this one, but this is pretty annoying to me.

First of all, this game does not respond to mid-drift counter-steer at all. When I drift, the car angles way too much and does not maintain angle from counter-steer input. I’m used to Need for Speed and while I guess Forza may be more “realistic”, this game does not respond to mid-drift counter steer AT ALL. This is pretty ridiculous. Does anyone else notice this and how can I stop the car from angling too much? By the way, I’m using a game controller (Logitech F310) and I use the D-pad buttons not the stick (never had a problem with this controller set up before).

Also, does anyone else notice it’s almost like brakes don’t work in this game if you apply them while cornering? Sure, you should brake before entering a corner but I’ve noticed my brakes are incredible when stopping in a straight line but if I’m doing any kind of steering input it’s like there are no brakes at all and the car just keeps plowing along through bushes/trees etc. What am I missing here?

The visuals in this game are spectacular though!!!

The car definitely does respond to counter-steer input while drifting. It’s actually super-assisted with a controller and really easy to control drifts, massively easier than it is with a wheel which doesn’t have the same assists. If you look at my drifting here, you can see the front wheels moving when I counter-steer to change the direction of the drift at the corners, and at other times to balance the car:

If you’re used to a different game, it will take some time to adapt.

Braking, on the other hand, I agree with you is pretty bad. Assetto Corsa Competizione does a much better job of making the ability to steer relate to the strength of braking in a progressive manner. A lot of what you describe, though, can be addressed to some extent with the build and tune of the car. If you upgrade to race brakes you can adjust the brake balance to allow the car to steer better while braking. Note that the brake balance on the tuning screen is reversed compared to how it should be, you want a setting above 50% to increase the ability to steer while braking. Also, it is expected that you need to reduce braking when you want to steer. You have an amount of grip that the front tyres can provide. You can use it all for steering, or you can use it all for braking, or you can trade them off against each other, but the total grip available is fixed. So if you want 50% steering ability you need to only be using 50% of your braking ability. As I said, it doesn’t work like it should in the game, ACC does it far better, but it’s still true in a vague sense.

Edit: also, I should have mentioned, cars differ in how good they are at drifting, and again the build and tune make a difference.

I came from NFS as well but got used to Forza in a few weeks and now I think its way better than NFS physics.

About the drifting and cornering brake, it can also be from the car’s tuning and driving settings.
Here are mine:
braking: abs on
steering: normal
traction control: off
stability control: off

Take your car to upgrade tuning menu, find new tunes and pick a decent one with more stars. See if you like how it drives afterwards.

I don’t know why you use the D-Pad. A D-pad is digital which means all on, and all off. So you either have full steer speed, or no steer speed 0 or 1. The sticks are analogue which means that you have a tiny bit of steer speed all the way up to full steer speed… probably 0-255 stages… depends on the programmer.

No, it doesn’t mean that in Forza. It’s why some of the very best players in Forza use keyboard to drive, because the game does not work like you described.

Exactly, keyboard has complex helpers so you can drift and race like a king. I don’t think other games have it.

I’m not sure using the d-pad buttons will switch the game into keyboard mode, though, I think it may well remain in controller mode. Maybe, just maybe, if you also used the buttons for accelerator and brake, it would switch to keyboard mode. If you could put the physics into keyboard mode by steering with the d-pad while still using the triggers, I think that would be totally OP as a way to play the game.

You are right, I was talking about keyboard. Hard to say what happens with Dpad. Some people are very happy with it so maybe it has something. Wheel is the most hardcore device for Horizon 4

Going between the 2 games is always a fun time, especially since I’ve just got the HP Remaster.

NFS drifting isn’t realistic, at all. Forza physics are more real. Braking and steering work in conjunction, not separate. It’ll take a few hours but you’ll get use to Forza physics in no time.

Like Bree said, drifting is easy because of helper, can’t be much easier.

Braking is strange in every Forza but I am not sure if Bree has it on a wheel but it’s controller thing for sure. I use trail braking in many games but it’s very hard in Forza because of controller steering. It’s not impossible but it’s not easy like in ACC for instance. And ACC is not arcade. Maybe you are talking about anything else.

You’re running a very subpar controller and you need more practice. When I started in FH3, it wasn’t very easy either, but now it’s NFS that feels weird to me.

I usually do it in FWD and AWD cars. FWD hatchbacks are incredibly fun with trail braking. But it’s much easier in cars with more suspension travel, because it compensates for the lower travel of the brake trigger compared to a brake pedal.

I still have a problem with Forza steering. It’s like you would steer and brake a bit but Forza steers much more and you lose your back first so braking doesn’t help at all. GTS is completely different, you steer and have understeer because of helper so you slightly brake and have nice trail braking. The same in F1. But in Forza you need to have exact speed and very easy braking. It’s possible but not fun for me yet. Maybe later. Will try hatchbacks

Bruh, Forza taught me to use the brake and handbrake at all. In need for speed heat and it’s predecessors you will lose if you simply brake, the only efficient way is to let go of gas and yank full throttle to make your car oversteer into corners, which makes my head hurt when I see it.

I use to play nfs a lot, but it seems I’ve grown out of it’s shenanigans.

You’ve gone from pure arcade to faux sim physics.

That being said, drifting is a skill that continues to elude me, thrashing a Hoonigan around the airstrip is one thing but actual road drifting is just weird.

You might as well control the car with the arrow keys on a keyboard with that setup. Forza is one of the few games where having a joystick to steer is truly important. Being able to control the angle of the drift will be impossible unless you can provide varying degrees of steering inputs. You are effectively asking the steering wheel to rotate 180 degrees from lock to lock every time you press the d pad right and then left again. Try driving a car like that in real life.

Even the analogue stick steering doesn’t let you steer like AquaPainter says. You can move the analogue stick rapidly side to side but the game only lets you steer at the same slow speed that you can achieve on keyboard. It’s a compromise to make it easier for the majority to play, which works well. However, it does have some major flaws.

I can’t imagine you would use 1:1 input  It doesn’t make any sense. It’s possible the speed is similar but probably game detects non-analog axis and ads some good filtering for it.

What major flaws Forza has? I don’t like the Forza steering but I would like to know what others don’t like.
