Over-steering problems

Forza Horizon 4 is my first time playing any game in this series.

I’m having problems steering my car on any surface. It feels like I"m always driving on ice. Like moving my controller all the way to the side is representing turning my steering wheel completely to one side. I feel I’m constantly over-steering and over compensating. Is there a way to change these settings? Or do I just need to learn how to drive in the Forza world?

I don’t know much from the lack of details but if it is a stock car with no mods it should not be that bad. However, when you upgrade your car or something it can cause lots of steering problems. I usually find I have to stiffen the front end anti-roll bars and maybe loosen the rear anti-roll bars. Front end springs also help or hurt steering, but again it should not be a problem if you have not modified the car. If it has not been modified it should not need any adjustments and maybe your controller or you are not used to the game. Can’t really tell without more details.

First off, what are your assist settings? If you’re using a controller and you have steering set to Simulation instead of Normal, that could be your problem.

I think I know what you mean since I experience the same thing.

The game tries to counter for oversteer by reducing the steering input so you don’t start to slide. But the counter is just too often way to strong reducing the input by more than 50%. You can clearly notice this happening if you use the cockpit camera. You will never fully turn the steering wheel around as soon as you drive more than ~100kph.

Imo this would be fine if you set the driving assist to normal but it should never happen on simulation. The game should not counter for anything at all.

I’m sure this is why you think you slide when you are just not turning the steering wheel around.

I have my steering set to simulation and have never experienced the game countering. I don’t think it does.

Sound to me like - a bad tune (too much power in your car) or incorrect throttle usage.

Nah if the steering wheel doesn’t even turn around it has nothing to do with tuning. The game just doesn’t allow you to turn the wheel.

Simulation steering is the setting you use for a racing wheel.

If you’re using a controller, use Normal steering instead.

I feel like this is wrong and comes down to personal preference. The sim setting is not just for racing wheels.

For me, on a controller, normal steering is horrible, imprecise and slow. I find the sim steering setting is the best, yes you need to learn to control it properly, but its quicker and gives you far more control. I use a controller, over my racing wheel, because the wheel support in this game is awful.

After thinking about this issue further, it just sounds to me like you need more practice in how to deal with a car when it starts to spin out.

It takes a good amount of practice. I can drive just fine with no assists and sim steering on my controller, but I’ve played since FM2. Usually a light car with too much torque and skinny tires is the problem. If you are downloading tunes they may have drag tires equipped which are useless in any turn.

Give me a car and a tune so I can see whats going on for you.

I started off using the Dodge Challenger, 60s era model I believe. Then I’m in the Ford Escort after doing a race. I’ve done no mods with the Escort and minor mods to the Challenger.

I’ll try changing the controller to normal.

The game knows not to consider the controller stick all the way to the edge means turning the wheel completely in one direction right? Or does it?

That is exactly what I think is the problem. If you stand still (any car) and the analogue stick is all the way to one side then the wheel will turn completely in that direction. But as soon as you drive (say 160 kph) the wheels won’t turn all the way.

Imo this is wrong and the wheels should still turn all the way around even if that means you over steer.

Is there a linearity option in the advanced settings that affects that?

Grab a Nissan Nismo GT-R LM “Forza Edition” on auction. It’s so grippy, even in snow! Just button off the gas and she grips!
