if my friend has a party game opened it lets me join that lobby but if i try to start a private match or join a multiplayer hopper or whatever it says failed to join lobby or failed to start match

You’re not alone. A lot of us are going through this issue. I have checked and I do have an OPEN NAT on an wired connection. It takes me like 5 to 10 tries before it lets me join a lobby. All other times, it would say Failed to join session. Very frustrating as well as some people not being able to hear me while I hear them. Others would relay the message. Hope it’s all fixed in the next patch!
