Specifically when it comes to theming and such. What sort of rationale do you use when choosing sponsors for your cars?
It’s always been a tricky subject for me. In the past, I’ve just gone online and searched for parts for whatever car I’m decorating, and then use the manufacturers I find as my sponsors. But in some cases, like higher end track cars, that won’t cut it.
For context, I’m working on a retro Sega livery for the BAC Mono, and don’t really know where to go.
like you said it’s generally looking at companies that make parts for the particular car -I’ve seen Ralliart decals on a Subaru (in the game, I mean) and since they’re a division of Mitsubishi…highly unlikely IRL. Or country-based (German companies on BMW and Mercedes, for instance).
In a case like this Sega car, I’d use some gaming company logos- logitech, playseat, etc. (great start, btw)
Personally, I will always try to use sponsors that are specific to the subject matter, be it music/film/sport etc. In this case, seeing as it’s a SEGA themed design, I’d probably look for something like the developers of my favourite SEGA games - companies like EA, Namco, Konami for example. There’s a comprehensive list of Games & Developers on Wikipedia that might be helpful.
I agree with SeveredTester, you’ve got a good start and there’s not a great deal of space on the Mono so you probably won’t need too many decals to finish it off. I see you’ve got Sonic on there, maybe you could go with a couple more game characters instead of logos, might work…?
Ah, looks like that was my hang-up. I was thinking entirely automotive sponsors. How did it not occur to me to just use other video game related names? I’ve dug a little deeper, and I think I have a better idea of what I’m doing now.
I’ve chosen Sega Sammy and Sega-AM2 as the other major sponsors. Sega Sammy’s the holding company, and AM2 is one of Sega’s development divisions. They’re responsible for famous coin-op racing games like OutRun and Daytona USA, so I think they’re appropriate to represent. Maybe if they had a Mono in one of their games, it could look like mine? For the more minor sponsors, I’m going to ape some of BAC’s partners. Turns out, they worked with a number of part manufacturers to make the Mono happen. I’ll sneak in names like Kumho and AP Racing. Might include a few official Sega-affiliated UK retailers to round things out (gotta keep it region accurate).
Thanks for the advice, guys!
That would be pretty cool, but I’d have to commission someone to draw me some assets. I can design in Forza, but drawing’s beyond me.
Take a look at this tutorial by DamnMe2006. It’s a good starting point but I know he made a more detailed tutorial more recently which I’ll try to find & post a link to later.
Just make sure you don’t mix sponsors that you’d never see on a car in the real world. That’s one of my pet peeves and something that really detracts from an otherwise good design for me. Like when people use multiple tire sponsors or multiple sponsors of the same product on a car. Do people really think that Pirelli and Michelin would both sponsor the same car?
