Do people generally vary their approach how they play the Horizon series vs Motorsport?
When I play FM6 (or 5 or 4 or 3 or 2), I drive with no more assists than I need. (TCS for high performance cars, normal instead of simulation steering, no clutch, and the one crutch I know I should wean myself off but never do - the driving line). Even in single player, I avoid contact with other vehicles (sim damage helps encourage this behavior ). I try to keep the Drivataur difficulty as high as I can and still have a reasonable shot of winning.
With the Horizon series, I don’t use the assisted steering or braking, but otherwise I use most assists. In single player I will gleefully run the other cars off the road if they get in my way, and while I won’t target people in multiplayer, if accidental contact does happen, I can’t say I feel very bad about it. I tend to start on medium difficulty until I start have challenges winning, then I switch down to easy/new racer and leave it there.
I think the difference is that for the Horizon series, the racing is not the primary reason I am playing the game, so I am not so concerned about making it as challenging as I can.
Anyway, I was curious whether other people’s mostly have similar approaches to the two franchises, or vary like mine does.
I fire up the games to enjoy the cars in different settings and environments. So I sorta always have the same approach, even if I am running different events, I’m aiming to experience the car mainly.
I usually turn off as many assists as I can handle in both series. Only thing I don’t use is the clutch because I find it cumbersome on a controller, and sometimes I’ll keep rewind on depending on the race and car and track or route. Sometimes I just want to practice taking specific turns over and over. I cannot stand the driving lines in any situation.
Bigger rewards with more assists off is nice, but more importantly I think most cars are more fun to drive without a lot of the assists. You get more out of the impulse triggers when assists are off, too. They give you great feedback when your brakes are going to start locking up and when your wheels are beginning to slip under acceleration. With the assists like ABS and TCS on that stuff isn’t really utilized to its fullest. It’s not really about additional challenge for me with turning most assists off being so used to it now, but it might have started out that way.
Same in both games for me also, although the Drivatar Difficulty will vary depending on the difficulty of each game. I try to be clean regardless but it’s no disaster if contact is made.
I do the same in both; no assists, save the driving line. The only difference is, in Motorsport, I know I should turn the driving line off (and probably could for most tracks), but for Horizon, I feel it’s a necessity to know where I’m going.
I haven’t really played Horizon online much; for whatever reason, I stick to single player in the Horizon games. I may change that in FH3, and while I don’t think gleefully ramming cars off the road is acceptable, I have to imagine there’s a bit more contact tolerated than Motorsport, given the nature of the game (changing terrains, oncoming traffic, etc).
I play both Motorsport and Horizon with full manual, no ABS TCS or STM and Normal steering.
Horizon is an arcade game, and so I play it like one.
I do not use the driving line in Motorsport, but I do in Horizon. The checkpoint system they use really doesn’t give a good indication of where I’m supposed to be going, so I keep the driving line on. I also turn off all damage (even cosmetic) in Horizon because with much more unpredictable tracks, I tend to make contact with cars and obstacles a lot more often. My driving is also much more aggressive in Horizon, because I turn off damage and because the slightly less realistic physics allow me to push harder than I could in Motorsport.
I never thought about approaching assists differently - they are just that assists. And if anything I found it easier to run. With no TCS (the only one I turn on or off) in Horizon 2 which lead to me running almost always no assists in fm6
Technically I run normal steering 100% of the time so some diehards would say I’m running assist.
For me I approach the two games diffently in how I play them.
FMotorsports are races - so I’m trying to find best time, improve, rival in a particular car or leaderboard. It’s like a relaxing work. Though ocassionally it becomes a bit too much like real work, and pending my mood, will depend if I put it down and move on or not. But I’m fairly hard headed so I be been making continuing advance on speed
HORIZON - there is race aspect, but I am a whole lot less serious about the game , I do get into rivals, but I don’t obsesss - I spend a bunch more time cruising in stock vehicles, try to improve drift, relax and have fun - interspaced with a couple serious attempts at a rivals board but overall it’s more like a vacation, cruising trying out cars, getting in old favorites, blasting down the road, listening to cool tunes. Taking in the sights. Not at all the mindset I have toward motortsports.
I guess to come back to assists. If the removal of the assist made it challenging for me to drive well, I would turn it on because I’d rather have fun in horizon then be obsessed with improvement
I don’t see the point in going “pro” and I use ABS and TCS with Cosmetic damage in both games, Manual (not with a clutch). In Motorsport I do drive like a professional and follow the “perfect turn” scenario but in Horizon I will cut corners as it is an Arcade racer and I feel it should be played as such. I am not a grudger though and refuse to purposely ram or bump people in either game. I have had people tell me I do not drive in Motorsport the correct way if I am using assists and I just don’t get it. They put them in the game so I will use them and I am sorry, car come equiped with ABS and Traction control for a reason, if you are drifting, I understand but if I am racing, yes I will use them. Assisted steering, braking and Auto trans I will not touch though.
I’m with you there. I use pretty much the same assists as you, though I’ll use STM in Motorsport games, but leave STM off in Horizon to avoid impairing my ability to drift.
I used to be like you, and if it’s working for you and you’re having fun, stick with it. You can play the game however you want, using as many or as few assists as you want.
That being said, I did find that when I started turning the assists off, my lap times got better, and racing actually became more fun. It’s not as hard to do as you think!
I run the same two crutches in both games - breaking line and TCS - but in Horizon I turn off TCS here and there depending on the car. My race approach is way different though - I’m a lot more aggressive in Horizon, and more cautious in Motorsport. My mindset for the two games is definitely different - after a year of trying to learn better and better race techniques in Motorsport, I’m ready for a year off to kick back and play more/work less. Of course the transition from Motorsport to Horizon is easy, the other way around: not so much lol
I definitely play more aggressively in horizon not so much hitting other players but how i attack the corners, cutting and extending as much as possible.
I used to LOVE the motorsports games, but as I get older I find the laid back, just-for-fun nature of the Horizon series to be more fun. I got more fun out of FH2 than I did out of FM5 & 6 combined (although I did still enjoy 5 & 6, just not as much).
I blame FH1. That game made me fall in love with cruising, which is WAY more enjoyable/immersive on a public road vs. a racetrack.
