Hello Forza Horizon Fans. I just wanted to give out some tips and tricks to make your forza horizon 3 the best possible experience for yourself and those around you. Please feel free to add anything you would like to this list as this is just my personal “Rules of engagement” that I go by while racing. I made one up for Forza Motorsport 6 but I wanted to make one specifically for the Horizon side so some parts may be identical to that thread but some will be different.
Be patient. You don’t have to be the first person to the corner or the first person on the gas. Know the limits of yourself and your car. With this game having jumps and different style of terrain it is very important to know what track your on and what vehicles work well for that track.
If there are some cars in front of you all fighting for position don’t try and force your way thru. The people in front of you are trying to pass just like you are. Take part in the fight but keep it clean and enjoy the challenge. That also means not diving into the corner to take someone’s line in front of you.
While passing it is your job to do it cleanly. If you can’t make it clean don’t do it. Sometimes it’s just not possible to make a pass so just wait it out. While making a pass stay in your lane, if you pinch somebody down expect to get hit because the bottom guy needs his room as well. Don’t get mad at him because it’s your fault for not giving him room. In Forza Horizon making passes will have more adventure then ever since they will be made on asphalt, grass, dirt, sand, water, and even thru the air so make sure you set the pass up where you both successfully can keep moving at race pace.
While being passed it’s your job to hold your line. What do I mean by hold your line you ask? It’s quite simple. Be predictable and stay in your allocated spot. Don’t go out of your way to obstruct others. I can’t tell you how many people I have seen try to block over aggressively and end up in the grass. So while holding your line that also doesn’t mean apex like normal because that’s “your line”. When an apex is done correctly you usually take up at least 2 lines, the outside line, and then the inside line. So while being passed if you’re on the inside line stay there thru the entire corner not just the beginning. If you have to let off the gas a little bit on exit to keep from running into the guy on the outside then do so.
Drafting can be very useful if done correctly. Beware that horizon has lots of bumps and jumps in the game so when bump drafting do it on roads you know are flat. Don’t be 1 inch off the guys bumper while going over a jump because you will most likely end up on top of his truck rolling over and over. Back off for a split second to let a gap happen between the 2 vehicles to avoid that from happening.
Braking is incredibly handy and the button for it is the trigger on the left side of your controller. Brake hard at the beginning of the braking section and ease up as you get closer to making the turn. A perfect brake should end with almost a sigh of relief. It is a deadly game of cat and mouse. It is on the line of out of control and very fast. If you are having to hit the gas to get to the corner you have over broke, so next time drive the car in a little farther, and try again. If you have slid past the turn and end up in the sand I would recommend braking a little earlier and harder but that’s up to you.
Acceleration. Everybody knows where this button is so I won’t touch on that. Having 800 hp does nothing if it takes you an extra second to put the power down. Where do drag cars make or break the run? At the launch, so think of every corner exit as a “the launch” and get the power down as quickly as possible either thru tuning, thru the build, or thru practice with throttle control. Don’t use the excuse it has too much power, if it’s broke fix it!!! Don’t choose a 900HP rig for a slow tight track. You’re going to have a bad time.
Practice, practice, practice. I promise you will get faster the more you practice. I don’t just mean driving around by yourself, get out on the track with other drivatars in career mode and race. Try not to hit other cars around you. Figure out how to brake and accelerate in traffic. Learn how to hold your line while making a pass. If getting passed, then again hold your line. The better you get around other cars the faster you become. You won’t wake up one day, grab a controller and be the best. It takes months of dedication, critical thought and teamwork. You need time to “grow”. So once you can get over the fact it’ll take months, possibly even years, you’ll start to see results. Make friends; try tunes that aren’t yours and most importantly - ASK QUESTIONS!!
Going off the course may be the fastest way around the track. Search for short cuts to give you the edge on your fellow racers. BE AWARE THAT IF SOMEBODY ISNT TAKING THE CUT TO NOT RUN INTO THEM BEFORE OR AFTER YOUR CUT.
Wallriding… Some people love it and some people hate it. If you choose to wallride then make sure your not hitting your fellow racers while they try and do the track clean. There is no right or wrong in the big scheme of things with this tactic just know some racers out there do frown upon it and may ask you to race fair. I for one will not wall ride but to each-their-own.
Understand the situation of your surroundings. This is so very important to having a nice racing experience. Understand the racing situation that you are in and think ahead on what’s going to happen. I think a lot of this is about “situational awareness”, or being aware of a situation before it even arises.
Examples:
Don’t overtake in areas where the outcome is most likely a wreck. Don’t put yourself in a situation that will most likely end up in a pile up. Slow down a bit and you will most likely get thru while everybody else wrecks for being impatient. Big air isn’t always the fastest, try letting off the gas a bit before launching yourself 200 ft into the air.
If there is a wrecker in the lobby be looking behind you to move out of the way of his speeding bullet. (VOTE TO KICK).
Understand not everybody is on your skill level. Some drivers are new to the game or maybe just the class.
Understand not everybody’s car is built like yours. There are millions of building options in this game so some cars may need to get on the brakes sooner than you. Be aware of this and if you are right behind a car that brakes early give the car some space so you don’t run into the back of it.
Understand the track! If it’s a grip track drive a grip car. I know its fun to challenge yourself and drive a non grip car there but this just causes accidents. 10 grip cars trying to get around a non grip car is a recipe for disaster. Situational awareness
Accidents are a part of life on and off the track. If you cause it slow down and let those affected pass, even if it means going to last place. If you were wrecked just LET IT GO and continue your race.
If there is a wrecker vote to kick them after the 1st race. If the 2nd race is the same save the replay and go to forzamotorsport.net. Send Snowowl a private message on there with the following info:
What forza game it is, Name of the wrecker(s), Name of the track, Detailed description of what took place during the race, name of the file (examples ooooo,eeeee,11111) Please make sure to watch the video before sending it to snowowl to make sure the wrecks were intentional and not accidental. Sometimes getting smashed by player A was actually player B smashing player A into you. Be aggressive with this, take 15-45 min at the end of your racing day to watch the videos you have saved of wreckers and share them with Snowowl. The more the community cracks down on this the quicker we will clean this place up. I have sent hundreds of videos to Snowowl on forza 6 so just think if we all took the time to do it. 1 person can make a difference! If you are a wrecker/griefer your time is coming
Example of message to Snowowl
Good day Snowowl I have video(s) of people deliberately crashing others. From what I can tell you are the person to help me clean up the lobbies. Here is the info requested.
GT: Name of the wrecker
Game : Forza motorsport 6 (or Horizon and name which one it is 1,2,3,4,5,6)
Track: Name which track it happened on
Description: Give detailed feedback on what happened. Like if he was wrecking everybody, if he waited to wreck the leaders, no braking into the corners, cutting corners and wrecking people are a few examples
File name: vvvvv, keep it simple and non obvious. He like 5 letters in a row or close on the keyboard that pops up on the xbox so he can type it in quickly.
When you name your replay DO NOT USE ANY GAMERTAGS. Use the random letters, numbers or combination like we’re suggested here.
When you save you replay DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN THE DESCRIPTION. You want to keep any reference to the GAMERTAGS in question OUT of the search capabilities.
When you review your replays: Use a consistent camera (I prefer follow advanced) and review from the perspective of each driver. Yes, it takes time. But it’s the only way to ensure you are reporting actual wreckers and not wasting your time, or anyone else’s time, by reporting unskilled players or just plain accidents.
While reviewing your replays. Go into photo mode to check for inappropriate content on cars. Profanity, nudity, pornography, pedophilia, references to drugs, racism, etc.
These things exist and need to be reported in the same way.
This system is frustrating and severely undermanned and under used, in my opinion. However, it is all we have available and we should use it properly and often to help clean up the game.
Thank you for taking your time to read my “Rules of engagement” post. Horizon 3 is still months away and im sure I will be updating this as more rumors and gameplay is available.
Thanks everybody and I will see you on the track and as always keep it clean and keep it fast!
ERS JOHNSON
P.S. Feel free to share this with friends and other social media outlets and please add what you do to get the best racing experience for yourself.
Pretty sure Horizon doesn’t let you save any replays, so yeah, wreckers seem to be free to reign.
Not that contact has ever been discouraged in the Horizon series. Rack up those Trading Paint skill points! Go for the Ultimate Pass by trying to lead in the first corner for massive points! Etc etc~
You cannot get any of these unless youre playing league/serious level even in iracing/AC/pCARS on PC and you want it in forza? that is just impossible but good luck though…
Nice tips that should be standard in every racing game, sure, but this is pure theory and as we all know it has absolutely nothing to do with practice. This doesn’t work for FM6 and it’s even more utopistic for any Horizon game.
It does work in forza motorsport 6 and it would in horizon 3. Its all based on one persons action which is yours. If you control what you do to the best of your ability and so do the others then it works. If people don’t then that’s when all the wrecks happen.
Its amazing how different the response to this is on Horizon 3 compared to Motorsport 6.
when taking a shortcut that crosses the path of other player, it is your responsibility to keep from hitting and wrecking those players that didn’t use a shortcut…
Johnson, I want to stress that I absolutely agree with every single point you’re making and if everyone could apply that in practice on track racing in the Forza universe would be so much better. Now I’m convinced that the majority of people causing accidents are not intentional wreckers but kids and/or casuals. I do believe that some points you make require a certain maturity. Clean racing (no contact)? Giving space? Holding your line while racing door to door? No way. Kiddies might think “**** off, I’m gonna smash you into the next wall”. I haven’t played Horizon 2 for a while now, but that’s why I didn’t care about being annihilated in almost every race anymore. I just carry on racing without wasting time and energy to retaliate or something.
I really hope you got some positive feedback from people who could improve their racing by applying your tips, though.
If this was actually a job that I got paid for I would possibly consider your “advice”. All I see is your desire to enforce your will on other to play your way. Now as far as multiplayer you may have valid points of discussion but you have no business telling me how to play in single player and since you did not specify what your “advice” was for I choose to take it as you telling me how to play a GAME which you have the right to do if you choose and I have the right to ignore you completely.
Advice is great, suggested recommendations, again great, Rules as decided by you, even with consensus of others, in a game, a little extreme.
I could care less what you do in your career mode against yourself and drivitars. Online is a whole different story and we should respect eachother while driving and racing online. Some wont because they cant comprehend that others like to not get wrecked all the time. There are rules to online gameplay and my “Rules of engagement” are MY rules I live by and makes my experience online much better. I shared my rules so others can make their own rules they race by online in hopes that the lobbies will clean up at somepoint.
In single player I will wreck everybody if I have to get 1st because it doesn’t affect anybody ever and so I don’t have to ever redo a race. Online I don’t hit other cars on my way up to 1st and the reason is I respect other players and I want to be able to enjoy online play as well.
Now, Mr. Dirk, no where did he proceed to tell you how to play the game. He’s just stating the way Multiplayer should be played out. How to have fun while still being competitive.
If you feel targeted about this post then you are probably the one causing the issues online. Old saying ‘If the shoe, wear it’ in this instance, you tried it on and it was a perfect fit.

SHOULD being the key operative word. Who is he to decide what Should occur? As I said, suggestions, sure, “this is the way I play” great “Rules” no thanks.
By the way I do not feel ‘tergetted’ as I almost never play multiplayer. Multiplayer is one of the worst things ever to come into games, in my opinion, because you have to take the good and the bad and people are generally inherently bad when it comes to gaming and any sense of fair play. Part of this is the developers fault for their handling of how multiplayer works but it is also the gamers ourselves. Outside of your friends, you have to take what you get and many just cannot see past their own sense of entitlement and sense of being the center of the universe.
For the elite players, hats off to you for mastering the game, just remember being at the top of all the leaderboards will still most likely not get you a date or a raise at work. It’s a game, a diversion from reality and I will never take it more seriously than that.

The dirk dude is the man you usually find at the back of the field, smashing the cars and trying to block the fast approaching front runners cars as the come by him because he feels its his god given right to allow no one to pass him.
Yes it a game, but like every game, golf football etc etc there are rules. Unwritten rules, good gamesmanship if you like to call it that. These rules are exactly that, unofficial, unwritten rules designed to let the fast guys enjoy their race and the slower guys also enjoy theirs without being rammed every second lap.
Now if your going go continue to be so narrowed minded and inconsiderate of others wanting to enjy the game to the full, keep your £50 in yer pocket and dont buy horizon 3.
Cheers.

Again… these rules are my rules (ERS JOHNSON) not yours. I am simply sharing my rules that i go by to give me the best experience possible on forza.
Btw there are rules for online play they are in the TOS from xbox that we all agreed to by purchasing xbox live.
What you do in single player has no affect on anybody else ever so do what you please. If you bring that same mentality into online racing thats where accidents can happen and where rules can be broken. I simply shared so others (excluding you) can beaware of the difference between online and offline gameplay.
Have a good day and hopefully others will see this post as what its supposed to be.
Some things should not have to be explained like breathe in, breathe out! Move left foot, move right foot to walk!
Come on dude quit trolling as you know he wouldn’t go through all that work putting that all down for your single player gameplay. Really we have to explain this to you?
Oh yea chew before you swallow your food too please as we wouldn’t want you to chock.
His advice is great and it was very nice of ERS to post this to remind us of some of the courtesy points in the game.
I think it’s safe to say these tips are generally and objectively useful to improve your racecraft, no matter if you’re playing in single player or multiplayer, but this is explicite for multplayer. It’s all about fair play in order to make racing more enjoyable for everyone.
The wrecking in Horizon is far worse than in Motorsport. It part of the reason Forza 6 has more wrecking than any previous Motorsport. Banning again will not work. I’ve been attacked on storm island so many times it’s ridiculous. I’m not sure they even ban people in Horizon. It’s a different animal. I always had to defend myself there was no way around it.
Those were more realistically attainable in the first Horizon when we could make our own lobbies and actually set up and race the races we actually wanted to race. Now, since FH2, it’s so random it’s a mess and it sounds like 3 won’t be any better.
