Heavy Metal Affliction 1979 Subaru Wagon

With this little wagon there is more than meets the eye. Sure it has a few dents and a little rust. It may even be missing a lug nut or two. But the owner has does some amazing custom work to the engine and suspension making this rarity a one of a kind ride.

The story behind JpMn2’s love of Subaru’s runs deep so have a read and tell me what you think of the story and shots.

I look forward to your comments.

John

Its great to see a blue collar guy take something that others see as junk and use his hard learn skills to turn it into a show winner. It goes to show that if u work at something especially what u love u can turn it into whatever you want. Love these types of reads john please keep them comin… F4 ferrari scudera----camaro ss coupe – lambo gallordo s

Nice car but I don’t like that he lowered the wheels. All wheel drive cars aren’t meant to be low riders it just doesn’t look right.

It’s cool to see unique cars and what someone has done with them. Whether they bore out an engine or bag the suspension, each change shows there personality and a part of them. Each car has it’s own personality and appearance just as people do, and I think you can really tell a lot from the vehicles people drive.

Its a beautiful South Texas late winters afternoon, as I sit and listen to Pink Floyds Learning to fly,Ijust got off of FM4 after a lil me time racing, the air is cool and mild, with a touch of spring at 73 deg F. got on the web and i see the little Subbi and smile, its been a long tiem since ive seen someone just be creative and have fun with a car they enjoy. it does what he wants, when he wants it to and how he wants it to act, smile for the gentleman, he has the heart and soul of and for the craft. I t brought me back to the 80s and the wonder and discovery of the iron horses of my youth. the freedom of moonlit 4am cruises down to the island to watch the stars dim into the blueness of dawn, the smell of the surf, the music on an old Kraco through 6x9s…
the rush of the 4 barrels of a QJet moaning into the night as the roar of duals bark into the the nite…I AM HERE,it said…
as I sit in this worn and broken body, I am still free, still FREE, when i see and hear of some one fiercely and faithfully pursuing the winds of time in a car they crafted.
Good, no Great job on the car and never stop, never be still, dont settle for a lesser and mediocer life, thanks Johniwanna for the story,Thank you JpMn2 for the light!

This is beyond sweet. That so cool!!

Love the orange colour - reminds me of my second car, a Vauxhall Shove-it I bought from my Grandad when he was too old to drive anymore. One of my friends bought me fake license plate that read “GRRRRRR!” and said I should paint tiger stripes on it - that kind of orange. I used it as my ride to and from London on the weekends (this was in the mid-90s, so no congestion charge  ). Then that fateful day when I attempted a blast up the M1 to visit a friend up North … suffice it to say between the flames, steam, and smoke, I didn’t make it. The carcass was sold to the garage who towed me off the motorway, and I bought a train ticket.

Interesting read - thanks!

That is the coolest thing i have ever seen. I love cars like that, it has character. Im not a huge fan of flashy cars, i prefer them worn out and showing there age with all there battle scars. I also build cars on a budget, the junkyard is one of my favorite places, lol.

Keep up the great work and id like to see this thing in the future as you work on it.

Um… i guess you just gift credit on FM5?

Another great HMA article this week. I really have respect for someone like Mr. Solsten who isn’t afraid to show off his car’s battle scars with pride. Every car has a story to tell, and those dings and dents and scrapes are all reminders covering the vast spectrum of emotions that a true car lover experiences through the course of his/her time with a particular car. In my opinion, a car like his Subaru is worthy of just as much respect and admiration as any classic car that has been preserved by its owner in a climate controlled garage. Cars were meant to be driven - often hard, and often beyond the scope of what the designer of the vehicle might have imagined. I think its more respectful, perhaps even more honorable (if you believe in that sort of thing) for a car to have those types of battle scars, those types of memories of road trips or rallies, and to proudly show them off, rather than to relegate a car to an environment where its only purpose is to entice the eyes of collectors. Nothing against car collectors and preservation societies, but to preserve the beauty of a particular vehicle at the expense of its personality just seems like a disservice. Just my .02 cents.

I’d love to see this in a Subaru Car Pack like you did for Honda!

The one thing that people tend to forget in the car community is that each car is built to the owners taste and not for someone else to like. It is an art of self expression to something we all love and drive. It is a part of you as you are part of the car. Let it express you and your taste in modifications. If people criticize saying I would have done this or that differently, they can d that with their own car. Respect other driver’s taste and creativity.

Haha, what a cool little wagon!.. Awesome with the air-ride suspension.

I dont think i ever have seen this model before, but it looks so cool.
And with a turbo convertion and AWD i bet its a whole lot of fun to drive it !

This car would have been even more awesome with some oldschool deepdish rims!
