I could hardly handle the “Open-wheel Legends” without traction control. But now, coming back to FM7 after half a year, they (and cars in general) seem to be easier to drive. Was there a car handling update in the last 6 months?
Thank you.

No.
Yes, there was one in the Dec update but it added to much grip so they lower the level of grip in the Jan update. But yes the grip is higher in the game now than when it was first released.
That was an update with the new force feedback system for people with racing wheels, that is not anything to do with the handling of the cars. Just wanted to make that clear, as some people put force feedback and handling in the same catagory, and they are two entirely separate things.
What did change in the December update, is fully listed on T10’s support website; if you (or anyone) would like to see what updates have been since release -
Regardless of what the update notes say, I think there was an adjustment to the physics during the December update. The force feedback changes alone can’t explain trail braking (among other things) suddenly working better. I suspect the tire modeling was tweaked (or possibly fixed), but that’s just a hunch.
Trail braking has remained the same all along, nothing in that regard has changed. Handling is the same as it was on release. You have just gotten better at it, thats all.
If you’re driving with a wheel then I know exactly what you’re talking about. It’s very likely they did not change anything except the force feedback, but that has made such a significant difference it feels like the cars have more grip or are easier to drive. I drive with a fanatec wheel and 100% assists off and those open-wheel Classics were basically ice skates for me in the past. In fact a lot of the high powered cars are much easier to control now. I find that not only can I control them better, including the ability to rotate them smoothly in the corners, but I can catch slides and tank slappers for the most part now. Before it was a guaranteed spin out and welcome to the tire wall kind of event.
I understand where you (and others) are coming from, but I do think there’s more to the changes than just the FFB improvements. Even with FFB entirely disabled there’s still a difference in how the car (any car) reacts to inputs compared to how it reacted at launch (and yes, that’s something I’ve tested). Maybe the way wheel/pedal inputs interact with the physics engine was changed to facilitate something in the FFB improvements. Hell, it could be a bug. Without a practical way to quantify (or at least document) the differences after the update (and no, the patch notes don’t count), it’s all speculation.
As long as it stays improved, I suppose I don’t really care overmuch how it got that way.
Heh. Not impossible, I suppose, but unlikely. I’ve been playing these sorts of games for about 30 years (does Pitstop II count as a “racing sim”?), so I’d be pretty surprised if I had an epiphany and got better at brake modulation overnight. Would be nice, though.
No I’m with the other guys, the game has definitely had its handling/grip tweaked. Several cars that used to slide or get loose on certain turns now handle it well and those include the Audi 90 quattro, the Mazda rx7 GTO, the 60s F1 cars, the Porsche 911 RSR and many others. Grip is better than it was on release no doubt about it. And again it may not be in release notes but they could have still tweaked it.
No, I play since start and with more than 700 hours of driving i didn’t notice any change to the grip.
I don’t think so, been playing it for over 4 months now. Handling seems where it should be. Braking in the game is too easy though. Every car brakes super-efficiently. Other than that, learning curve is not that challenging and you can learn the game immediately after a day or two, or even a few hours. I play with no assists and on a controller with zero inside and max outside deadzone. Game is reasonably challenging and base physics model is actually very good IMO.
