Has Forza 5 taxed the Xbox One to its limit already?

All hardware has it’s limitations, but I know T10 is no where close to crossing the line with FM5 on the XBOX ONE console. There is plenty of room for improvement. and only time will tell. Lets see what happens when T10 releases FM6.

You know…the more I think about it the more it seems time for certain types of games to entertain the idea of a subscription model. Instead of working on Forza 6 they could just apply optimizations, and content as its ready. No more segregation of the player base, and lost cars, every couple of years, just improvements. As it stands when you factor in the VIP and Car Pass we’re pretty much already on a subscription plan, the payment schedule is just condensed.

Back to the point. The thing which bothers me most about microsoft guys speaking about the xbox one is that they are all so keen to tell us about how future focused they are…and don’t get me wrong, its good to see them patching the xbox and kinect…but honestly the patches haven’t improved it noticeably. …and when they all chirp the same phrases it means they are scared and coached. Guess its warranted, i’ve never seen this much concern about the future of a console in its first few months.

I think the updates rolled out by MS have been huge improvements. And it hints to their dedication to their community and their console. We all complained about features missing from the 360, and they built them into the xbox one. We all refused to buy an Always Online console, and they apologized and changed their policies.

MS is concerned with success. The company has been having a lot of internal movements and they just don’t want to drop the ball and become the next nintendo. Think about your work. How many people move in your job when your direct supervisor gets promoted? At my job, it sets of a chain reaction where half a dozen people get new jobs. Imagine all the stress and expectations that come from such a demanding community like us gamers.

I love their transparency and think MS has been doing a great job pushing the envelope.

Only first hand experience I’ve had regarding this matter is need for speed rivals, we own both consoles and im a fan boy of neither. I brought both simply so im not limited to a certain platform of racing game.

Anyway we had rivals for the Ps4 and I borrowed rivals for the xbox one and in terms of graphics there is a noticeable different between the two , smoke effects ect were reduced on the xbox one and AA was noticeable on the one ( flashing white lines ) but both games played smooth.

I do think my xone will only be used for Forza games and the ps4 will most likely cater for other racing titles.

Far more goes on at Long Beach than Silverstone if you look. It’s not an issue when everything is a blur

The static modelling is the best i’ve seen in any game including p.c. and i suppose the dynamics is saved for the cars.possibly the crowd could be improved ,lol who
are they all anyway

Long Beach Circuit in game looks almost exactly like Long Beach Circuit. I think it’s one of the best looking tracks, as well.

I have seen the track on TV every year for nearly my entire life (30 years) and have been there once in person. Indianapolis I have been to a hundred times because it’s an hour and a half north of me and it looks pretty spot-on to me as well.

In my opinion the game looks amazing, and I am impressed at the level of realism capable in video games these days. Remember also that I started gaming on a Commodore 64.

I also remember the first days of the Xbox and Xbox 360. Games that came out early in the consoles’ life spans were totally eclipsed by games that were developed a year or two in to the consoles’ lives, and those were eclipsed by games released a couple years after that and so on.

Be patient, my friends. Enjoy your games. There will most definitely be more and the best has yet to come.

And also, look on the bright side and count yourself fortunate to have an Xbox One. There are a lot of people who don’t. In fact, I just gave a kid my last old Xbox 360 (I had a few…) and he was ecstatic, like really thrilled. He was selling little crafts he made to try to save money for a 360. I took pity (he’s 12) and gave him the console that was just sitting around at my place. He was still playing a PS2 on a standard definition tube TV.

You sir, are awesome.

To the OP’s point, the thing that made me worry about this from the beginning is just how slow some functions are vs Forza 4 on 360. Like when adding upgrades to the car. Adding all the modifications to a car in Forza 5 takes forever by comparison. It’s understood that the game is 3x larger than F4 but when the console has 16 times the processing power, why is this so slow? It’s also very slow when loading a race. Again, I get that its a bigger game, massive amounts of data to load for these tracks, etc, but 16 times the processing power should take care of that, no? Take my confusion as innocent ignorance. It just seems that the game should process faster.

Um no. The system just came out and this is Turn 10’s first go at it on the new console. I am sure in the future they will learn and develop lots of new ways to optimize things. So no they are in no way pushing the hardware to the extreme limit yet.

This is from the article on Autoblog.com.

For FM5, the objects that make up each track have increased by 200 percent in this generation, and there are six times as many materials in evidence, making up the landscape.

And this from the same article.

The first step for building a FM5 track of a real-life venue, as you may have already heard, involves laser scanning everything: from the surface of the circuit itself, to the surrounding buildings and even vegetation. The resulting digital model includes every element rendered in “sub-centimeter accuracy,” according to Greenawalt. For a track like Long Beach, the laser scanning means functional elements like the curbing are true to life, as well as details like the exact angles of the palm trees that line the track, and appearance of the shadows they cast at roughly 150 miles per hour.
Tens of thousands of photographs and 360-degree video footage is also used as reference material for artists; the team captures some 1.4 billion data points for each track made. We don’t have much context for that number, but it seems like a big one.

Im actually fairly concerned with the strength of this generations consoles. You have to remember that while 60/1080 may sound good, its soon to be eclipsed by 4k which will replaced even faster by 8k(This should be where resolution slows a bit, as 8k is pretty sweet for the human eye…) To drive this home, 8k cameras are in the wild, and mirror less consumer level camera are shooting 4k(Sony and Panasonic). By my, off the cuff guesstimate, 8k tv’s will be affordable within 5 years…and yes we all will “need one!” Really…its so, so good…

To the point, even with optimizations, and gained efficiency in coding, will there be enough horsepower to facilitate resolutions which will be the norm, during the expected 10yr lifespan of the product? Can firmware updates etc really bring 4/8k resolutions with solid frame rates to a console which most games can barely hit the 1080/60 mark? Makes ya wonder…

…not to mention the fact that VR headsets will finally go mainstream over the next year, or three. This requires higher frame rates and resolutions/refresh rates to achieve well. Surely there will be a hardware and upscaling added by the VR headset but as they evolve towards higher resolutions will it be enough?

10years…I just don’t know…sure there will be the normal increases seen with every console and its games… Thats not new…frankly it should be obvious/expected to anyone born from the 70’s on. But 10yrs…I’d be pleasantly surprised if they could pull that one off. Seems pie in the sky from where I sit…

PS: to all the VR naysayers and virtual boy linkers. The screen/camera/processing tech is finally here…it just wasn’t before. VR will be “must have” for a myriad of cool, educational, good reasons but thats not why its going to work this time. This reason is the driving force behind every resolution war and recording medium from the VHS/Betamax days to dvd/blueray and on and on…its P0rn. Where 3d p0rn was instantly thought of as silly…VR will be and off the charts hit. I mean, vr is pretty much the definition of ‘fantasy,’ sooooo not really a leap to see how this ones going to play out. Pretty straight up honestly(sorry that was horrible…) The whole porn arguement aside, I personally can’t wait for VR Forza(or whatever is best when it hits). To be able to look around, check the mirrors etc etc sounds incredible in a driving game!!

I think we need to look at how quickly people will upgrade to a 4k or 8k TV set, a lot of people are still on LCD and not upgraded to LED to expect a line of people to be queuing up for the “Next Gen” is a little naive and it will not be in a lot of peoples price range for a while

Lets say people get into the new 4k/8k in 3/4 years im pretty sure both Sony and Microsoft will have worked out a way to boost the resolution on the consoles

Blimey…are people genuinely thinking that the worlds most successful company will have not made its super-duper console, that will potentially decide whether it is the most successful company in 10 years time, slightly future proof? The company that has more money than governments, and can spend it exactly how it wants, has overlooked the potential market in 5 years time? No they haven’t. It will be fine.

I don’t think anything can be more successful than banking, and gas/petrol.

Off topic but bottled water companies!? I mean the stuff comes out a tap.

Yes. It seems things were rushed. Also there original plan for the xb1 has changed the no digital thing, that everybody flipped out about was the way forward. Most likely the one is a stop gap that won’t last as long as the 360.

Honestly it feels that the 360 was “next gen” in comparison to the one.

Turn 10 will continue to modify their engine as they learn more & more about X1. I expect night & weather by Forza 7 in 2017. Still 1080p 60fps. Besides, they haven’t maxed out the console. Forza 5 is a launch title. Will be a few more years before deveolpers start to hit the wall limit. They always learning new ways to get more & more out of a console through its life cycle. Xbox 360 games started maxing out in 2010/2011 in my opinion. The last 3 yrs hasn’t really seen anymore leaps in performance or graphics on 360.

Like Dan said with FM2 (Its been a while) Fm5 may take all the console resource right now. But the more they use it, the more they learn “Shortcut” to optimise it.
So fm6 may use all of the system ressource, but be better at it (Think Windows vista vs windows 7  )

Thanks all, appreciate all the replies, look forward to all the things “yet to come”.

This news of DirectX 12 certainly is interesting.
Improved graphics? Resolutions?
