APEX FAQ: OVERVIEW

Forza Motorsport 6: Apex is “designed for players who are new to the franchise” but draws on elements from the full Forza Motorsport 6 game. In the absence of specific info about Apex see the FM6 FAQ for its features and details as a likely guide. Some FM6 features are not included in Apex.

How does Apex differ from other Forza games?
Apex is free and is available on Windows 10 PCs only, while other Forza games are only available on the Xbox console. Apex uses a portion of the car roster and track roster from Forza Motorsport 6, has a slightly different game economy, has its own Xbox Live Achievements, and does not have Multiplayer lobbies. Forza Motorsport series games feature closed courses on tarmac, contrasted with the open-world setting of the Forza Horizon series.

How does Apex gameplay differ from other racing/car games?
Apex and Forza Motorsport are rated E for Everyone similar to titles in the competitive sports genre. The game is designed to be accessible to a wide range of skill levels while delivering a realistic experience at high visual fidelity. Apex does not have a storyline with protagonists and antagonists but instead focuses on car appreciation and performance.

  • AMD.com
    Download and Install
“On average, it takes about 3 hours to download 30 GB over a 20-Mbps connection.” (s)
  • Windows Store link for the full game (28.08 GB)
  • Windows Store link for the Beta (18.67 GB)
  • or open Forza Hub for Windows 10, click Forza Rewards, and click “Learn More” next to FM6: Apex to open the Windows Store link
  • or click the Store icon on your desktop, Games, browse/Search to the title, and Get the App or Install.
Can I choose the install location?
Before downloading Apex, connect your preferred physical internal or external drive to your PC (the destination cannot be a different mapped drive on your C disk). Then to set the destination drive for Win10 apps, press Start > Settings > System > Storage > Save Locations > New apps will be saved to: and set your destination drive. Then download and install Apex. Otherwise, the default is to save to C:LocalAppData\Packages.

Is Xbox Live Gold Membership required to play Apex?
You must have a Microsoft account to play Apex but the Xbox Support FAQ does not mention Gold.

Is an active internet connection required to play Apex?
“You’ll need to sign in to the Xbox Live service via the Xbox app when you launch Forza Motorsport 6: Apex. Once successfully connected, you can continue to play offline as long as you’re signed in to the Xbox app. If you play offline, some features, such as the ability to purchase additional items from the Windows Store, will not be available. Additionally, any leaderboards will be unavailable while you’re offline.” (s)

Does Apex require or support Kinect functionality?
No.

Is a wheel controller required, beneficial, or supported by Apex?

  • Apex won’t have wheel support at launch, but: “As development continues, players can expect to see updates and improvements to the game. For example, wheel support is coming to Forza Motorsport 6: Apex and Turn 10 is busy working to ensure that Apex delivers the kind of wheel support, performance, and features that racing fans expect from a range of available hardware. In addition we plan to support additional features that we know are important to PC gamers, such as the ability to disable Vsync and an in-app framerate counter.” (s) | (s) | (s)
  • Wheel controllers are not required for Forza even when they are supported, and many of the world’s top Forza drivers are just as comfortable or more comfortable using the standard Xbox One Controller or Elite Controller. In the driver Assists menu, Simulation Steering is designed for wheel users.
Does Apex support pedals and shifters?
Unlikely given the lack of wheel support.

Does Apex support the Xbox Elite controller functions or third party brand controllers?
Download the Xbox Accessories app from the Windows Store to configure the Xbox Elite controller.

ForzaTech
“The Forza franchise is built on what we call Forzatech, that’s our engine, our rendering and our physics engine, and both games are built on the same platform, and we evolve that between the two studios over time.” (s)

DX12
““Forza Motorsport 6: Apex” is a powerful demonstration of what the ForzaTech™ engine can do when unleashed by DirectX 12 at resolutions up to 4K” (s)

Xbox App for Windows 10
You can download the Xbox App from the Windows Store. “The Xbox app brings together your friends, games, and accomplishments across Xbox One and Windows 10 devices. APEX FAQ: PERFORMANCE INDEX AND CLASSES

Performance Index and Classes
In FM6 each car is given a PI number (described in the quote below) from 100 to 999 which changes when upgrade parts are installed. PI ranges are grouped into ten classes (E, D, C, B, A, S, R, P, X) which group cars of similar performance levels together for racing events. However, the PI number is a single assessment of the car’s lap time around a virtual test track (see description below) and do not indicate guaranteed performance on every track. Additionally each car has a rating for Speed, Handling, Acceleration, Launch (added back in for Apex having been left out of FM6) and Braking are shown from 3.0 (slowest/weakest) to 10.0 (fastest, strongest).

The PI numbers for cars in Apex have been adjusted compared to the same cars in Forza Motorsport 6 due to track selection. In most cases the PI has gone up while the performance ratings have remained the same. In Apex’s roster the lowest PI car is the 1965 Ford Mustang GT Coupe at C451 up to P997 for the 2014 Audi #2 R18 e-tron. Apex does not feature upgrade parts as in FM6 so these PI numbers cannot be changed, but the cars can be tuned for gearing, suspension, braking, differential, and aero.

How is a car’s Performance Index (PI) calculated? How realistic are the driving characteristics?

APEX FAQ: DIVISIONS

In FM6 most cars are assigned a Division which is used for event restrictions and leaderboard grouping. Apex’s career events group similar cars but Division is not a filter option in Free Play.

APEX FAQ: CAR SPECS AND TOGGLES

Car Specs
In FM6 custom multiplayer lobby users can filter eligible cars by Performance Index, power, weight, drivetrain, engine layout and configuration, cylinders, aspiration, Region (North America, Europe, Asia), Country, Type (Production, Pre-Tuned, or Race), Manufacturer, Make, Model Family (Silvia etc), Division, or Year. Only power, weight, drivetrain, an engine position are indicated in the garage and Rent/Buy Cars menus. Forzavista also shows some car data. A benchmark screen in the tuning menu shows 0-60mph time, 0-100, top speed, 60mph-0 feet, 100-0 feet, and lateral g’s at 60 and 100mph.

Telemetry
In FM6 a telemetry HUD while driving shows power, rpm, boost, tire temp/speed/camber, g-forces, suspension travel, and damage.

Damage
In FM6 cosmetic damage from impacts is shown as cracked glass, broken headlights, crushed panels, and scuffed paint. Simulation damage is expressed as a percentage of functional degradation in suspension, steering, engine, transmission, brakes, and differential which affect the performance of the car and responsiveness to control inputs. Sounds during shifting will indicate damage and smoke will be seen behind the car, but fully damaged cars do not break apart, catch fire, or pop tires.

Toggles
In FM6 headlights, dashboard illumination, wipers, and aero are activated by the game depending on the track chosen and speed of the car. Drivers cannot honk the horn, trigger blinkers, open doors, toggle windows, or toggle other car functions while driving. Forzavista allows players to open the hood, open doors, get in and out of the car, and turn headlights on or off.

Simulated Physics

  • Weight: “We display standard manufacturer curb weights in the UI - i.e. wet with no driver. the backend sim uses more detailed numbers.” (s)
  • Tires: The ForzaTech engine deforms tire sidewalls with stress. “Tires heat and wear. Heat changes pressure and friction. Pressure changes stiffness and friction. Wear changes friction.” (s)
  • Puddles: “When racing in wet weather in Forza Motorsport 6, you’ll experience aquaplaning across real physically simulated 3D puddles, each of which has accurate drag properties.” (s)
  • Night temps: “At night the tarmac cools down, reducing overall grip, which means that racing at night requires a different skillset than racing in the day.” (s)

APEX FAQ: FORZAVISTA AND HOMESPACES

Homespaces
A Homespace is where your current car is shown in screensaver mode on the main menu and in Forzavista. FM6 and Apex offer two options for Homespaces: a paddock garage and an outdoor patio in Rio. Homespace can be changed by selecting the Driver Record tile from the main menu screen.

Forzavista

  • Forzavista is an up close mode enabling you to open a car’s doors, hood, and trunk, get in the car, and look at each point up close. Use the controller sticks to move around the car, and press the left stick in to move from high to low viewing angle.
  • Active icons: Anywhere there is an “i” icon you can select it for detailed info on that part of the car. A color wheel will enable you to paint the car.
  • Engines can be revved from inside the car but not all cars allow you to open the hood.
  • You can change car or enter Photo Mode in Forzavista.

APEX FAQ: GARAGE

Acquiring and Accessing cars
In Apex there is no Buy Cars menu. Cars are unlocked through the collection of medals from racing performance. Any car you have unlocked can be accessed in Free Play but players also have the option to pay real money to unlock access to cars earlier than regular progression.

Can I import cars from my previous Forza game garage into Apex?
No, there’s no connection between different game garages.

How many cars can I own?
In FM6 players can own multiples of any car model up to a garage limit of 600 cars. In Apex you can own one of each model.

Can my garage cars be shared with my friends?
Garage sharing is not a feature in Apex.

Can I gift or receive gift cars from my friends?
Peer gifting is not a feature in Apex but you may receive gift cars from Turn 10 via Forza Rewards.

APEX FAQ: UPGRADING

Apex does not feature upgrade parts as in FM6, but cars can be tuned.

APEX FAQ: TUNING SETTINGS

Apex features the same tuning menus as in FM6.

See the FM6 Tuner’s Garage forum for tips on tuning.

Tires
All cars can change tire pressures without installing any parts. Adjust pressure to create the right contact patch and affect tirewall flex; pressure increases with heat.

Gearing
Sport transmissions allow for setting the Final Drive ratio while Race transmissions allow for setting each gear individually. Lower numbers allow for higher speed, higher numbers provide more acceleration. Watch the benchmark data for 0-60 and Top speed for these effects.

Alignment
Set Front/Rear Camber, Front/Rear Toe, and Front Caster. These affect turning and stability.

Anti-Roll Bars
Set Front and Rear separately. Lower numbers allow more body roll, higher numbers are stiffer.

Springs
Set Front and Rear stiffness, and ride height.

Damping
Set Front/Rear Rebound and Bump stiffness.

Aero
Set Front/Rear downforce. Downforce creates more grip and can be used for turn-in but more downforce reduces top speed.

Brake
Set brake balance and pressure. These are used to control when wheels lock up, and how much weight transfer loads each end of the car.

Engine tuning
There is no ability to tune compression or other engine features.

Wheel Offset
There is no ability to change wheel offset, though different rim choices may have an impact on appearance.

APEX FAQ: TUNING FILES

Tuning File import
Due to the absence of upgrade parts and different PI numbers, Apex does not feature importing files from other Forza games.

Sharing Tuning Setups
Currently the only tab in the Setup Manager is for My Tunes.

Tuning File limit
In FM6 there is a limit of 500 saved tuning files. Information about Apex is pending.
