Forza Horizon 4 demo

Demo was fun. Wish I got to try more cars though. Changed some graphics settings and restarted the game, click “continue”, and it starts the demo all over again. Kinda lame.

Thats the same as all Forza demos though, they always restart and don’t save

It’s the same with most demos period. They exist to give people a brief taste of the game and sell copies - not to be a mini-game unto themselves, with saves and everything.

found the demo on the xbox store, had to search for it though, download took a while … good thing dinner got done in the meantime,
so on a full stomach & well fed hopped into the senna and set off , like a crazed maniac

the demo plays very well, couldn’t see any stutter and it’s simply gorgeous, the level of detail and destroyable objects, its a darn hoot!
found some boats near houses, couldn’t resist trying to get those into the water ,but alas … maybe in the full game…
the different grip levels are quite the improvement over fh3, ai response … still got lots to explore, but it’ll keep me busy till the 28th

all in all an excellent demo

I don’t have the time to read the whole thread to find out if someone wrote anything about the PI system yet. But can anyone tell me how the PI System behaves? Heard you can tune in the Demo. Has anyone played around with its limits?

Thx ahead if anyone answers me!

So hows the Performance Guys?

FH3 was horrible, das FH4 finally use all CPU Cores at the same time? or again the first one more than the others…

Stuttering like in FH3? is it possible to play under 60 fps or is there a huge stuttering again?

No stutter at all. All 6 cores were being used in my i5 at around 20-40%. GPU was pegged at 99% as it should.

My game set itself at 144fps, strangely enough, there was no option to lock to lower figures. I got 100fps at the worst. Mostly hovering around 110fps.

Hopefully we get more fps options so we don’t torture our GPU’s.

Completed the demo and spent a while driving around.

Graphics look immense on an Xbox One X, but playing in 1080 at 60fps was the biggest improvement I saw. The additional One X lighting effects (cars casting realtime shadows in headlights etc.) also look pretty nice.

Gameplay-wise the biggest change I noticed is how different cars react on different surfaces - you can’t just V12 your way over a rally track anymore. It should lead to much more variation in online events.
It’s difficult to comment much on the features (as many of them are locked for the demo), but the ones I have tried all work pretty much as expected.
The numerous characters are pretty irritating and cringey, but that’s the case on all Horizon games (for me at least). Hopefully after the initial intro for each one we don’t see much of them again.

Very excited for the full release and very happy to have ordered the Ultimate Edition.

Pretty much agree here, although I didn’t try performance mode, I was happy with performance of quality in my one X.

And yes, what is with the guy body type? Huge butt, big thighs, skinny knees on down and those ‘pants’… They look like chicken legs in tights. All the facial expressions look like empty thoughts, which is kinda fitting for kids nowadays…

Beautiful game, probably won’t play much more and wait for release(hate starting over every time)

I have to say the performance is great, even at default the game looks great at 2160p60. I get a lot of infinite loading screens, especially if I deviate from default graphics settings but it may have something to do with my RAID0 SSD cache though. I’ll be experimenting more tonight with the caching (setting up a single drive cache) and my overclocks (Ryzen memory can be finicky) to see if I can get the demo more stable.

Here is a video on YouTube with MSI Afterburner stats: https://youtu.be/kxBGlpUULVo

The game doesn’t seem to be CPU heavy.

So, I’ve played a fair bit of the demo… My thoughts:

Graphics:

A clear 10/10. Seriously, FH3 on the One X was already amazing. This manages to be EVEN BETTER than that. Do yourself a favor and don’t even bother with the performance mode unless you’re a competitive player. Sure, the map itself helps a lot, since the UK is more colorful than Australia.

Physics:

Definitely improved over FH3. You feel the weight much better and grip loss is more progressive. Controller feedback is better, closer to FM7, which I like, but could be much stronger. Feels weak even at 100. In some instances there’s thick smoke coming from my tires yet little to no feedback in my triggers, with only faint vibration in the controller itself.

I wouldn’t give much credence to people who put FH3 and FM7 in the same ballpark, though. FM7, floaty? Not even close. Tune your cars the right way before claiming that. In terms of precision, FH3 doesn’t even compare. After playing FM6, FM7, FH3 and now FH4, it’s clear to me that FH4 drew from the improved physics engine we saw in FM7.

Performance:

A few stutters here and there, but they can be solved with further patches. Loading times are slow next to FH3 and could be improved.

Sound:

The change to the granular sound samples in the Forza franchise is clearly a WIP and we saw a bit of how good it can be in FM7 and even bits of FH3. The quality of the engine was brought down by some questionable design choices concerning some of the cars, but the cars that sound good in FM7 are absolutely terrific and very accurate.

Well, FH4 expands on that and brings the developments from FM7 over to the Horizon branch with further tweaks of its own. Unfortunately, and this is a problem in the Horizon branch, engine sound is excessively muted, even with the radio off. Turbo is almost inaudible, which you can notice in the few turbo cars they give you early in the demo. I think FM7 had it just right with regards to volume - in FM6, some of the turbo whistles were way too loud compared to the real cars, which is most noticeable in modern cars. Meanwhile, FH4 continues FH3’s trend of muting car sounds.

World:

Better than Australia, I’ll give them that. And Australia was good. It didn’t bore me even after months of playing.

Missiles will struggle in this one, which is always good since it voids AWD and nonsensical swaps. Detail is fantastic.

Characters:

Good enough to keep you going. Keira is back and I’m totally hoping she’s still trying to kill you on every opportunity she gets. She was never Australian, BTW.

Insert mandatory Mancunian and Scottish people here. Always a plus, love those accents.

Menus:

This is one of the key areas where PG can improve. I’ve found them pretty awful, myself. Audio and video options, always a staple in any game, are in smaller boxes next to the bigger ones for difficulty and gameplay settings. Their smaller size hides them in plain sight.

When it comes to features, most of the menus felt cluttered to me. Transitions are slow, and slower in quality mode, especially because they added a small cutscene when transitioning from gameplay to options.

I think this game is gonna be really good. It feels way too much like FH3, but better. Seriously, in a world where everyone complains they never got an NFS Underground 3, PG’s choice of evolution instead of revolution was the right one. Just don’t get too carried over and start claiming this is the “best racing game ever”… Not only we don’t have the full game yet, but there are quite a few examples of arcade games that do certain things better than Forza Horizon. Where Horizon really excels, as its Motorsport sibling does in sanctioned racing, is being a really great average.

Is everything you do in the Demo Exclusive Content (The races etc.) / That you can not play in the full version of FH4?

Or is it just the originial Game… cutted down to the first 1-2 Hours (In case of the Intro and first races)

Because i dont want to play all the stuff again on 28th september and be spoiled to much.

If it is like FH3 it will be the first bit of the game, cut down

Hivemind! I thought it was strange that all of the blokes were wearing tights. I also had a chuckle at the Asian illegal street racer, it was like being in Rotherham on a friday night.

I’ll probably also stick to the older games until launch so I don’t burn myself out in the starting area and get bored for the actual release.

Great demo, looking forward to the release. Had some fun trying to get a cheeky number plate past the filter. Didn’t allow BOOBSMAN, BUMHOLE or GAYLORD, haha! Finally went with NOBCHEEZ. I know, childish behaviour. (edit - bit of filtering going on here but it wasn’t that rude, just a bit cheeky like I said)

Lovely jubbly, downloading the demo now to my new Ryzen 2600X system!

This from my benchmark run. First my GTX 1080 shows only 6.71 video memory. Secondly I am dropping frames 50-55 fps in dirt races and spring the race with the bikes. I tried to get stable 60fps with vsyn on, Disabled MS44 and FXAA turned shadows to High still I am dropping frames. Any advice?

The benchmark test is really not a good example of how well the game runs which is really a shame. Settings that maintain a steady 60fps@1080p in the benchmark do not produce an equally smooth performance in-game. I encountered some serious dips in FPS around the festival and along the riverside roads near the mountain range in the demo area. Now admittedly, I don’t have the absolute best graphics card for VRAM since I have the 1060 3Gb but it is still able to maintain many settings on high as long as the rendering distance is set to medium. As soon as I bump that up to high I get occasional stutters as the game loads certain scenery from the distance. I would say that if most people keep the detail settings to medium for textures and meshes they can easily turn on all the fancy bells and whistles like night-time lighting and SSAA without a significant hit to frame rate.

Generally though it would appear that although the recommended RAM for the game is 12Gb but I’m getting along fine with 8Gb. The 3GB of VRAM however really is a minimum because I’m seeing usage peaking around 85% on Medium/High settings so 4GB VRAM looking to me to really be a must for High across the board @1080p. As for Ultra, I’d say that you’d be looking at highest end cards only. I’ll say this for FH4, the visuals are certainly going to stand the test of time when you consider that PCs purchased this year won’t be able to run it on Ultra unless you’re spending a few thousands on the build by by the time the graphics are looking dated it will be around time for FH5

Overall though, I was pleased to see that I didn’t need to invest in a RAM upgrade because DDR4 is insanely expensive at the moment.

Nice to see that the Focus RS STILL has the Focus ST steering wheel from… Motorsport 6?
