I’ve been a huge Forza Motorsport fan since getting my first Xbox just 3 years ago, Forza 3 came free with the Xbox 360 and although I was useless at even keeping the cars on the track at first, I soon developed the skills to drive, then tune and win my races on harder settings. I loved the tracks, cars, and realism behind the game and completed my career races time after time with great enjoyment. The speedway races and endurance races especially were enjoyable to me. Then came Forza Motorsport 4, which I equally enjoyed, playing for hours on end and for most of the days at the weekend. Forza Horizon was an escape from the norm and brought new dimensions to the game, amazing fun and the open world addition was brilliant. I even went out and bought a copy of Forza Motorsport 2 and a wireless speed wheel to make my driving experience more enjoyable and played day after day after day.
Then came Xbox One and Forza Motorsport 5 last December, I was counting the days until it’s release, but when I started playing this game, I just couldn’t help feeling that it didn’t have anywhere near the same level of enjoyment as the previous versions. Don’t get me wrong, the graphics and sound quality were greatly improved and in many ways the game is much more competitive than its predecessors but it just lacks that special something which all the others seemed to have.
All the good old tracks I loved to drive had gone, tracks such as Fujimi Kaido, Montserrat, Positano, Sunset Peninsula, Sedona Raceway etc etc. The marketplace also took months to open after the game was released, and we can’t even buy cars from other players or sell cars we’ve already bought and don’t want anymore.
I’ve spent so much real money on individual cars and packs, driven all the career races, and I’m left with well over a hundred cars in my garage, millions of credits I can’t spend, and all I can do is get rid of them instead of gifting them to friends or selling them myself.
Every category of career racing has basically the same tracks, and although I’m constantly coming back to the game after days or weeks on other games, I feel myself getting bored really quickly of the repetitiveness.
So much enjoyment in the past 4 years, yet so much disappointment with this release, what have they done to this once wonderful game? It’s lost it’s soul now, and as the franchise continues, I admit to looking forward with great anticipation to the release of Forza Horizon 2 but when Forza Motorsport 6 is released, I can’t help feeling that I won’t be so eager to rush out and buy it this time!
I somewhat agree with you but this was one of the first games for Xbox One. There was a rush to get games out. The low number of tracks and the so-so career mode are a consequence of this. These aspects of the game are really disappointing but in general it is a good game.
All the features of the Xbox One haven’t been fully explored. Once developers get good at coding for the machine, the quality of games will improve. I suspect Forza Horizon 2 will be a much better game but a different style of game. I then expect Forza Motorsport 6 will be much better than version 5. I am looking forward to the release of version 6.
It seems to be a common misconception that FM5 was rushed for launch, but the truth is that launch happened to be at the right time to line up with FM5. The reason that I can make this argument is that the Forza Motorsport games have all been two years apart. The first was in 2005, FM2 in 2007, FM3 in 2009, FM4 in 2011, and FM5 is 2013. We should expect FM6 in 2015.
The lower content volume is a result of content of Xbox One detail taking longer to build versus 360 content, but the game was due for 2013. FM6 is due in 2015, no matter how much is or isn’t done when that time comes.
I too agree with the original post
I actually enjoyed this game until I had about 20 runs on each track.
Lately I have been making golf courses in the golf club, and I take a break to come back to fm5 and to be honest, each renewed visit get more boring with time.
The small selection of tracks is really what’s killing me.
There are so many great cars in the game, but I would love more venues.
I love the gameplay, these cars drive amazing,
If turn 10 didn’t add anymore tracks, but instead implemented night racing option at Prague (picture that all lit up), alpine, Le Mans, yas marina and nurburgring, I would be pretty excited about that. After all, most of the cars already have headlights and interior lighting.
I have said this before on these forums, so I apologize for sounding like a broken record, but fm5 is going to get a true competitor this November, and it looks like Proj.Cars is not only one upping fm5, but it’s going to slaughter it with over 50 tracks, weather and time of day on every track.
I hope turn 10 doesn’t throw the towel in on fm5 DLC, but I have a good feeling it’s already happened, and that’s a real shame.
I really do hope Turn 10 has big plans to combat Project Cars.
I doubt it project car will be a true sim compared to this joke.
I really don’t know why everyone seems to think project cars is going to be that amazing. It has more tracks, day/night, and weather, but it also has about a quarter of the vehicles of forza 5 did at launch and 26X less than gran turismo 6. I hope its a solid game for slightly mad studios sake because if they fail to nail the physics for their third straight game id say they’re done for. Slightly mads shift series had good graphics, sound and sense of speed but the physics were atrocious and so far project cars seems to share those aspects from what I’ve seen. The physics are yet to be a focus from any article I’ve read about it which scares me being this close to release. With project cars being a pc game first i think the physics will be skewed more towards using a wheel which is fine for a pc but most console owners use controllers which is why I think forza 5 has the best physics on consoles period, it has a great balance for using a controller or a wheel where as gran turismo only has great physics with a wheel. Forza 5 does lack many features and tracks of past titles but weather and day/night cycle should really be the last of any body’s concern. Would it be nice to have weather and day/night cycle sure, but the fact that 75% of the people who play this game can barely get around the track in the daytime I don’t see many people other than hardcore racers really being able to appreciate the difficulties of night and inclement weather racing. I had pgr4 and it had night and weather, i always liked the extra challenge but it was a rare thing for anyone to choose those races during multiplayer so after a while It just became more of a novelty.
Funny isn’t it. People complain about Forza not having enough cars but that doesn’t seem to be an issue with Project Cars. I think it will be a flop. It appeals to the hardcore racer yet as you said the physics look terrible. Not going to work.
I’m a tester for Project Cars and it will be an epic experience both on PC and Consoles, it will focus mainly on Race Cars rather than giving you the ability to upgrade Road Cars. All cars are fully tuneable to the point where you can tune the left side differently to the right side for oval racing etc. The number of tracks is massive, I think with all the various layouts and point to point stages it’s close to 100 might be a bit more haven’t taken the time to count them all yet as for controller gameplay, this has been a huge focus for the development team, they realise that the majority of console gamers use controllers and they’ve been working with testers to find the best setup. I think if I’m honest it’s almost perfect on control pad (I use a wired 360 pad on my PC) and feels somewhere in between Gran Turismo 5 and Forza 4 but much less forgiving than both games.
EDIT: Just counted them all There is 104 tracks in total.
Same. I kept playing Forza 3 and Forza 4 for a very long time and now I’m bored of Forza 5 after just three months.
Not enough tracks, not enough race cars, nothing at all that can renew the racing experience compared to the older titles…
75 days to go…
You guys do realise that they can’t even get project car’s to fully run on the xbox one at the moment right, it’s only running on the ps4 & high end PC’s at the moment and with release only a couple of months away I can see it being dumbed down for the xbox.
SMS will show the Xbox One version at the EGX in London, so I’d wait before saying It will be “dumbed down”. But this is off-topic.
The Forza Motorsport series and Project Cars have some overlapping target audiences, but mainly different audiences. PC is mainly for players who want to race against other cars with a stock upgrade level that only differ in the tuning, while FM is more for the players who enjoy customizing/personalizing their cars with parts upgrades, tuning, and custom paint jobs.
I doubt I’ll purchase PC since FM has everything I want in a racing game (except for current Nascar cars, but PC is no better in that aspect with their past-gen generic stock cars) with lots of customizable American muscle cars, and with an excellent vinyl editor where magic happens. The racing physics are also excellent, so I see no need to even consider Project Cars.
The lack of tracks is probably the #1 non-online-related complaint for most. There’s a reason for this. It’s three words: quality over quantity. Same for the lack of cars. This game wasn’t rushed or anything.
I agree track count in forza 5 is abysmal, still don’t know the reasoning in releasing it with 14 locations and I don’t like jumping on the whole “built from the ground up” train. Along with the xbox one itself there are many excuses for the lack of features at launch, which I believe had to do more with money than time. Microsoft and Turn 10 decided that microtransactions were the “next gen” feature that was most important and people would be willing to pay for extra things that they never had to before, it obviously was a bad decision as they had to basically give the Super Pass content for free. It’s definitely something that they both have paid for dearly, xbox one with sales, and forza with tarnishing its reputation. This is the perfect time for someone to step in an d take a shot at the kings, I hope the physics are as you say they are RSR Nelly. Slightly Mad Studios are very passionate about their work and after seeing potential in shift 1 I really hoped what they said about shift 2’s physics was true before launch but it wasn’t, they were horrible. Like I’ve said I hope its a great game turn 10 needs the competition which they haven’t had since the project gotham series which was a great series of games. Gran turismo being on playstation would never be a direct competitor for forza, other than for graphical bragging rights which is what I think turn 10 has been hung up on for the past few years. Project Cars definitely is going for more of the hardcore sim direction, which is cool and all but will not be as accessible as forza or gran turismo, people hate on them for not being sim enough but the reasoning is simple, they want more people to buy and be able to play the game. Hardcore racers while very vocal are an even smaller niche of players within the already small racing game community. I hope slight mad can strike the balance of accuracy and accessibility that forza and gran turismo have. I don’t see it being able to overthrow forza or gran turismo seeming to be so sim focused, but it can certainly put pressure on them to innovate in future titles, which is a win win for us gamers. I’ve read about all the tuning options which is very extensive, but if you look at forza players I’d say 95% of people can’t tune, that’s why forzas sharing system was a good idea for accessibility, tunes make all the difference, no one wants to lose all the time because they don’t know what camber is, its still a game not real life. I don’t know if project cars has this feature and if they don’t is something they should consider. They need to build the kind of community forza has achieved over the years and the fact that it’s cross platform while better for initial sales might not be good in the long run for the community. Those are my biggest concerns, physics and community.
I’ve always been a sim racer, so I guess I may be a bit biased towards Project Cars. As a hardcore sim racer it ticks all the right boxes and has everything you’d expect from titles like Race 07 and the GTR series has. At the same time it has been made more accessible so pretty much anyone who’s played a racing game before can pretty much get straight into it.
One of the things I like is the way you can tailor the game to your own skill level and each level is based on a previous game you might of played in the past. If your in to PGR or more Arcadey titles then the lower levels 1, 2 or 3 might suit you better while learning the game you’ll have full access to all the assists in these levels making the game a lot easier for beginners. Forza and Gran Turismo players would probably benefit from levels 3 and 4. Lastly level 5 is pretty much for the hardcore sim racers (I-Racing, GTR, Assetto Corsa, etc) with this level almost all assists are unavailable and the AI is cranked up to the hardest difficulty
There’s something there for everyone.
I’ve played and enjoyed all types of racing games starting when I first got rad racer on nintendo. I’m going to buy project cars anyway as well as horizon 2, the crew might also be fun but I don’t know if I’m that into that kind of arcade racer at this point. I do enjoy more “hardcore” racing at times and get satisfaction from shaving tenths off my lap times. But as with all games they should be fun, and that is where my issues lie with project cars as I’ve said before, there might be different difficulty levels for assists but will everyone still be competitive whether they’re at 1 or 5, and for the extensive tuning sometimes too many options are no good, it can fracture the community even more. I don’t use assists but Forzas tune sharing ability keeps things competitive, if you have the right tune you can still win with some assists on. I do believe over the years racing games have gotten easier and there are many people who buy them for the pretty graphics and need to use all the assists and aren’t really pushed get better but then find out they can’t race and ruin other people’s races, its a major problem with forza as well which is why the lack of private lobbies is a glaring omission in this game. Maybe project cars will force people to race with more discipline and learn proper racing etiquette or maybe it will fall into the crash fest forzas multiplayer has succumbed to by giving the game for free and never forcing the issue of racing skill. I just don’t like the blind hype towards this game because of it being new and it has pretty graphics, kind of like the way they are with driveclub which is even more hyped up than project cars. I just don’t think a lot people know what they’re getting themselves into with a sim racer, and I really don’t want to get stuck hot lapping all the time. It’s great to be excited for a new game and I’m sure it will have its place but I just don’t see it revolutionizing the racing genre.
Aren’t all of the tracks in Project Cars auto club tracks? And there aren’t 50 tracks, just maybe a dozen with variations? It won’t have pro tracks afaik. Am I wrong?
Yes your wrong.
I really enjoyed Forza 2 to 4, but I am keeping away from Forza 5 because I’ve been reading about the numerous great features they took out from Forza 4. In addition, I hate DLC. I understand that it’s an easy way to make money, but I think they should be focusing on ways to reward fans instead of making hundreds of DLC car packs. I truly think highly of developers that give away free DLC. For example, just look at what DriveClub (PS4) developers are doing. Unfortunately, to say “free DLC in Forza” today sounds laughable, but I hope one day it will sound believable. Honestly, I would pay up to $125 for a single game EVERY YEAR if the DLC would stay free. I really hope Forza 6 is the next-gen Forza game I want (lots of content, classic features, more free cars, weather effects, night racing). And this time, don’t rush it out.
