FH5 crashing issues after Nov 2024

I’m having the same symptoms, game runs fine for about an hour then just dies. Using an AMD 9700X and an RTX 3070 on the latest drivers.

Same here. Today I played for like 4 hours. Paused it to do other stuff. Suddenly the fans (not sure if CPU or GPU) started to ramp up and it simply crashed to desktop, for no reason. Using latest Nvidia drivers.

RTX 3070, 5800x3D, 16GB DDR4, NVme SSD

Kinda unacceptable that this has been going on for this long.

Same here on 4070s 5700x3d for forza horizon 5 i enter race and everything is ok but when game starts to loading i get crash without text and i am kicked to dekstop randomly also one time it showed me low streaming bandwidth , first i tought its maybe because my friend share his steam library and now i can play his games but its not because this.I build my pc before days and experience this kinda things is a shame… also my first game was tomb raider rise of the shadow and if u play with directx 12 game also crashes u must change to 11 and get worse performance to not crash. So 2 games played so far both crash only CS works well.I think pc gaming is awful and will switch to ps5 pro atleast you dont experience such crashes

I bought Forza Horizon 5 two days ago. The game is unbelievable. I have never seen such quality in any game before. It has to be seen to be believed.

But just as the OP and the rest of the people here, it comes to a point about 20-30 minutes into the game when it just freezes and then crashes completely, showing me the desktop.

I built this machine recently, and I stress tested everything plenty of nights to be confident that my hardware and my build are sound. The CPU is the i9 14900 KF, ROG motherboard with 192 GB of RAM. My card is the underappreciated RTX 4060 Ti with 16 GB of VRAM, a card that YouTubers hate but I love because it’s 500 bucks and it’s fast. I play this game with all the settings set to Ultra, at 3840x2160 120 Hz on my TV set, and I don’t get any stutter or anything, it’s as fluid as it can be.

It would be much different if I saw that it’s struggling to show the game and it was something like 15 fps, but the game’s overlay shows me well over 60 every time I look at it.

As for drivers, everything is up to date, and just today I downloaded the current Nvidia Game Ready drivers, and before that I had the Studio drivers from December. Studio drivers are supposed to be more stable, but it crashed FH5 just the same.

So I’m going to try all those suggestions in the troubleshooting page, but it’s really disappointing that I have to waste time taking all these troubleshooting steps, perhaps even having to uninstall the game and all that, when I bought it just two days ago, and my Windows 11 installation is just a month old.

Does anyone know if FH5 keeps app logs somewhere? All I can find with the Windows Event Viewer is a typical cryptic error that doesn’t mean squat unless you work at Microsoft:

I started playing around 4 PM and I spent two hours until my eyes were burning and I had a headache. Every 15 to 20 minutes it would crash. At least it kept the progress pretty good, but I had to repeat a thing or two to get to where I was.

I started going through the list at https://support.forzamotorsport.net/hc/en-us/articles/360007593074-My-Game-is-Not-Launching-or-is-Crashing-on-PC

Things I did so far without success:

  • I started it as an admin
  • I disabled Nvidia Overlay
  • I started it from XBox app (it seems to last longer when starting this way, but just like five mins longer, so it’s useless anyway. Besides, we know that Xbox is always running in the background because when you get prizes you see the blue notification sliding from the right)
  • I went to the Apps tab in Windows Settings and then to both FH5 and Xbox. On each, I did a repair, not a reset, because I want to do everything I can before I throw away all my progress. If anyone knows a way to backup the progress and then import it, please let me know.

So it would be good if someone could figure out if there’s a specific log for the game itself. I tried to go into C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\ but the WindowsApps folder can’t be accessed, even my account is admin. I could change the owner in the security tab, but I don’t know if that might mess things up, so I’d rather not.

But if we could find a log that the game creates and shows some kind of clue as to why it is crashing, then at least we’d have a starting point. Otherwise it’s like throwing crap to the wall and see what sticks.

only driver rollback is working
556.12 or 561.09

Tested today with latest driver, game still crashed. Looks like the devs don`t care

Constant crashing after one lap of play. Has been ongoing for over a year. Erased the game from my Xbox months ago and reloaded it last night. Same issue.

win 8 compatibility mode with latest nvidia driver worked for me 1hr longer

I turned Raytracing off and it seems to have fixed the issue - RTX2070 Super

When I sent a ticket to support they told me that the latest Nvidia driver has problems, to revert to the previous one. Well, to me that’s just an excuse to pass the ball to Nvidia. There are some problems with that statement:

  • If you go online you can see that this has been going on for several years, even going back to FH4.

  • The usual “solution” is to roll back drivers, which doesn’t work for every single person. There’s no Nvidia driver version that will guarantee no crashes.

  • With both the previous driver version and the current one, I have played other games for hours for hours each without crashing, and funny enough, this includes Forza Motorsport, which I have played 1 hour and 36 minutes until I quit it myself. Other games include graphics demanding games, the latest of which is Grid Legends, which I installed today and played about two hours without any issues.

  • That said, there were two games that crashed on me, one of them really bad, called “Control”, which doesn’t even have graphics that great and shortly after you get control of the character, it freezes. Previous times I have played it comes back to life after several seconds, today it froze my PC completely so I just uninstalled it. The other one is Fallout 4 after I installed the High Res textures package

  • I don’t know if both Forza games rely on the same engine, but it’s fair to assume they do. So how can it be possible that FH5 crashes every time and FM doesn’t?

I replied to them with all this and they never got back to me. Which is sad, because FH5 has about the best graphics of any game I have ever played. The more I play in 20-30 minute increments, the more I’m blown away by its realism down to the last detail. I just wish they would release more places like Europe, Asia, Australia, South America and so on.

In my case, The game always crashes after 30-40 minutes of gameplay. There’s nothing that triggers it, its totally random. And this cannot be a driver issue since this has been going on since october and I believe that there have been multiple driver updates since then.
One more stupid thing to note is that it doesn’t give any errors, just crashes out of the blue and takes me back to steam.

My specs are 7700 paired with 4070super.

OK, so I got some good news, at least for myself, so I hope that they might be also good for at least a large number of you.

I have two things for you all to try if you want to give it a shot.

Yesterday I got to play for about two hours until I close the game myself. My settings are 3840x2160 and until yesterday, 120 Hz because my card and TV set support it. But I set the Hz to 60. Now, I don’t know if it was only that that stopped the crashes, because at the same time, I enabled FXAA, which disabled automatically the other types of anti-aliasing. I still have to really pay attention to tell which of them is the best one, but I don’t notice any type of anti-aliasing that is distracting to me (and visual defects are usually very distracting to me), except maybe a hanging cable in the distance and some random element, totally acceptable to me.

Yesterday I also went into the graphics settings and changed the preset to Ultra. While the main preset was set that way, this preset sets some things to High, and since I wanted to test my hardware, I had manually changed each graphic setting to the highest it would go. But since yesterday it’s in Ultra, which shows some items as Ultra and others as High.

These changes allowed me to play for almost two hours, until I closed the game manually for I think the first time ever.

Today I left everything the same but made two changes. Before I even opened the game today, the Xbox app was showing that there was an update pending for it, so obviously I installed it, which barely took any time, 5 mins I think.

When I opened the game, I enabled Intel XeSS. While I don’t have an Intel graphics card, and my Intel CPU is the one without any graphics in it, I read that Intel XeSS also works with cards from other vendors. Just as it happened with the previous change in anti-aliasing technology, enabling it disabled all the others

I didn’t notice any change in image quality or aliasing. The imagery looks amazing. As far as I can tell, every little picture enhancement the devs thought of is there, like reflections, or the car gradually getting full or dirt when driving on sand or dirt in good weather, the rain on the car itself and on the screen, and all the realistic elements that they put in this game. I think it’s by far the most realistic game when it comes to that aspect, way ahead of the rest, with Forza Motorsport and Grid Legends close behind it. Now, if they just added more countries and continents to it, that would be a blast.

The good thing is that in this video and graphics configuration, I played for over three hours, and after two hours I even changed the TV input to another one to watch a TV show while I was eating something, then went back. That’s the kind of thing that would mess up a game, because there’s the HDMI handshake, which to this day is still a disaster, and all the things Windows does, the graphics card does and so on. But no, once I switched back to HDMI 1, the game was still there, and I kept playing it for another hour and a half.

So at least in my case, this video and graphics configuration is pretty solid, and I hope it will help others. Please post either way, so we can know if perhaps the problem was in one of the AA options, if you had them in anything else than FXAA. Or perhaps it was lowering the frame rate from 120 to 60. Honestly, I don’t see any difference in the game.

I believe it is a driver issue, game crash on 566.36(game-ready) and 572.16(game-ready and studio), but totally fine on 566.45 Hotfix driver(game-ready), I haven’t try the last hotfix driver since some game with anti-cheat doesn’t allow hotfix driver.

Turning raytracing off seems to work for me also, 4K resolution and everything else maxed out and no crashes since.

It doesn’t fix it, it just delays the crash for a while, but it will still crash.

The only real solutions are to go back to driver 561.09 (the best solution) or play with FG enabled (RTX 40 and 50 only) but FG causes some stuttering issues on some machines.

For me there have been no crashes since i turned raytracing off, could behave differently with other gpu/cpu combos.
I run it with native 4k with TAA and 4090 / i9-14900k, did whole playlist in one go and was rock solid for 2-3 hours what it took for me to complete it so for now i just leave raytracing disabled.

im playing with RT off all this time, must be something else
