FIX THIS TURN10, MS STUDIOS, AND PLAYGROUND GAMES. Unacceptable

Currently at the time of making this post, I am just about set in my decision to never buy a Forza franchise game ever again. Not because the game is bad, not because the game is not fun, but because I simply can not play the game that I paid $100 for the Ultimate Edition of.

I have been a long time supporter and player of the Forza franchise, all the way back to Forza Motorsport 3. Playing that game on my very first wheel is what gave me the want to be good at drifting and helped me get to the point that I am at now in my sim drifting career (I’m in a couple Pro drifting competitions on Assetto Corsa). FM7 was the first Forza game that I have played since FM4 and the only thing that brought me back was angle kits being added to the game. I had an absolute blast coming back to FM7, reconnecting with old friends, doing competitions, and that even pushed me to purchase my new rig that I have now from Fanatec.

So once I heard that FH5 was going to be released and had ray tracing and all the new goodies that T10 and MS Studios had put in previous games I was stoked. A day or two before launch I purchased the Ultimate Edition of the game so that I could play early. To my disappointment I couldn’t play AT ALL on my sim rig because the game was absolutely riddled with bugs and crashing, WHICH IT STILL IS TO THIS DAY. Months after release the game is still so broken I can not play it. First it was Fanatec wheel drivers causing a crash in cut scenes, which made 0 sense but okay sure so I waited for a fix. That got patched and I thought, “Oh, that should be the end of my troubles,” HA what a joke. The game continues to crash randomly no matter what I am doing or what I am using to play the game.

For a AAA title to release in such a broken state, and not just the Fanatec wheel issue, but the freaking 2 page long list of issues that this game had on release with other programs being open and who knows what else causing issues just running and playing the game (even now) is just unacceptable. I wish developers would get it through their thick skulls that we as consumers do not want a half assed, rushed, broken game. Give us a complete working game or don’t release it at all. Now I realize that other people have 0 issues at all and the game works fine, and that’s great for them. But for someone like me who has a completely overkill PC (i9 9900K, RTX 3090, 32GB RAM) to still not be able to play this game months later is infuriating. What also really makes me mad is that they don’t even have a crash report submission system. So I can’t even begin to try to explain or diagnose what is causing the game to crash constantly.

Now to finish off this post I don’t want anyone to get it twisted. I love FH5. The game is amazing. From the atmosphere, the graphics, the open world, the endless things to do… honestly I thoroughly enjoy the game, I just want to be able to actually enjoy my time playing it. It has been nothing but disappointment and frustration for me. So either they fix this game so the small % of people having issue can enjoy it, or this will be my last ever Forza purchase.

Proof of the endless crashing from my last time trying to stream FH5 (crashed 4 or 5 times in 35 min):

I play on XSX and on average I have to restart this game once or twice a day due to bugs ranging from quick start issues, infinite sync issues, etc.

Never mind…reading the Known Issues list points to the Fanatec Wheel being the issue for the crashes rather than the reasons I originally posted about

Yeah

Don’t think its the Wheel in the video wich causes the crash he is driving around fine with it

I don’t really have experience with wheels but it may be possible that the wheel being plugged in is causing the issue? Or maybe the software the wheel uses? After all, FH5 is the epitomy of “does not play well with others” when it comes to other programs…I think between here and the Microsoft forum, I have seen most programs mentioned as causing issues with FH5, although Internet security programs seem to be the main culprits

The issue here isn’t necessarily whether or not my wheel is causing the game to crash. The issue is that the game is crashing so much I can’t even play it. A triple A title should NEVER release in such a state. To me this is almost as bad as Cyberpunks issues.

Yeah but is the game crashing or is something on your setup forcing the crash…
Looking at your desktop we have a cryptominer some other “useless” stuff we have ghub and your taskmanager shows OBS… ( obs and g-hub is listed here https://support.forzamotorsport.net/hc/en-us/articles/360007593074-My-Game-is-Not-Launching-or-is-Crashing-on-PC )
FH5 is using Arxan so maybe something running in background is forcing the game to crash

And sorry but with your “hacker look” desktop you should be able to open eventviewer ;D

IMHO If you develop a game that crashes with obs you did something fundamentally wrong.
BTW.: Same for cinematic replay cams…
Just imagine what kind of FH-Videos we would have on youtube with cinematic replay cams… but…
It feels like they don’t want to sell much as possible copies of the game…

You clicked on that link? There is a bold text for OBS users…

“If you develop a game that crashes with obs…” c’mon… they’ve spent hours on it… there was extra design/brainstorming phase for “how can we make the game unplayable for some users” ideas and everything was written on piece of paper, put into some hat and …

You realize you’re defending companies that don’t care about you right? Just because a crypto mining program is on my desktop doesn’t mean anything. Many people mine crypto in their spare time, it’s a great way for passive income especially if your lucky enough to have a 3090 like me. Secondly, programs running in the background should have no affect at all on gaming. I can play every single other game you see on my desktop with 0 issues. Even God of War which just recently ported to PC works flawlessly (probably why I was a PS guy before PC). Even Cyber Punk on release for the most part worked for me. Third, it’s the Matrix bro. Classic, iconic movies.

Once again my point is, it should not matter what programs I am running in the background or what I am doing on my PC. The game should work. End of story.

Fanatec is/was supposed to be a supported wheel; there is simply no excuse for FH5 to fail to run with it on release or months after it. Moreover, this was and continues to be inexcusable oversight.

My game doesn’t crash too often but when it does, it just disappears and crashes to desktop. Did it twice yesterday.

Standard troubleshooting for me is:

Malwarebytes with rootkit detection, verify integrity of game files, run DISM and SFC, reinstall GPU drivers.

Have you run Windows memory diagnostic and is this the only game that crashes for you?

I bought the game through Microsoft store so I don’t think I can verify the integrity of the files but I have tried “repairing” the install and “resetting” it. I just recently updated to the latest GPU drivers as well, yesterday actually. Already tried DISM and SFC a long time ago as I said this issue has been happening since release. As for the memory diagnostic I have not done that, but just set it up to do it on my next PC restart. But yes, this is the ONLY game on my PC that crashes like this. Every single other game works fine and I hardly ever get a crash. Like I said even the recent God of War port works perfectly. I’ve got 5-8 hour streams on that game with 0 crashes. Dying Light 2 which just released works flawlessly even though I get a degrading FPS issue lol.

So honestly, there’s no excuse for this to still be happening. MONTHS after release and issues like this still plague people and it seems like they really don’t give a s***.

There is nothing wrong on his setup, he tested everything and checked crashlogs… Its the game and

I literally can’t play the game, 6 crashes in a row when I’m hitting “enter” on the first screen. Disabled all background stuff - crash at the first livery. This game is unplayable because of it’s technical state, there’s literally no support, and I can’t even request a refund. Worse experience ever, my first and last Microsoft game.

Did you even check if your Fanatec direct drive wheel is even supported?

… I was tempted to not even respond to this comment. Yes, obviously it’s supported. If you watch the video I posted, you can see that every time I relaunch the game at the main menu I reload my custom wheel mapping instead of the default “Fanatec CSL Wheel” profile.

What wheel have you got?

Just downloaded a 5GB update for the game. Still crashed after a race which is normally a guaranteed crash for me and has been since release. As soon as the loading screen begins to take me back into free roam the game crashes, resulting in me having to close the game via taskbar, and then again via task manager since I still hear game sound and it still says it’s running. Really would be nice to have a crash report system to, ya know, report this type of thing.

Not really sure what this 5GB update did. Nothing important obviously.

I’d just like to second everything that Aom LooNiE said. The game remains in an inexcusably bad state to this day, and while for me it is the actual lack of Fanatec support that is the be all end all, many other issues are simply not ok. The largest regret i have with purchasing games ever, is not refunding this within the first two weeks, thinking “oh the wheel thing is a pretty important thing, i’m sure they will fix it fast”. 3 months later, i’m still down 100 EUR with no communication from the devs at all. Sure using driver 356 is a workaround, but if you have any of the fanatec DD wheels, being on up to date drivers is extremely important. The fact that the fanatec DD wheels are still listed as supported devices on PC in the official specs, is grounds for a false advertising lawsuit. At this point Microsoft is knowingly misleading potential customers.
