DV for Forza Motorsport

How many of you are using DV while racing?

It looks great but I can’t seem to get rid of the gradient banding in clear blue skies and night fog/haze around trackside lights - well, unless I turn off VRR and live with the input lag that’s inherent in DV.

You reckon it’s better to just stick to HDR10? That has no gradient banding, whether VRR is on or off.

Games must support DV and i don’t think FM23 does that. Just stick to HDR10. You won’t notice a difference anyway.

I play it with HDR10 because PC’s don’t have DV license. Only media players, consoles and TV’s have DV licenses. And TV’s usually only have it for streaming services like Amazon Prime, Netflix or Disney+.

Ah I thought so… I’ve read in multiple places that DV is kind of hit or miss in games but really good for TV shows and movies.

If you have Mass Effect Andromeda, that game supports Dolby Vision iirc.

I use DV, and it looks much better with PRT than HDR10 does. Xbox Series X.

How do you get rid of gradient banding? Only way for me to get rid of it is to turn off VRR which of course means I’ll have to live with input lag. Or just revert to HDR10, then I get no gradient banding.

So does Flight Simulator but I still get the gradient banding.

Do the HDR values you set in the Xbox HDR calibration app actually have an impact on DV for games?

I don’t have a X-Box so no idea. I am a PC player only since 20 years.

I don’t experience any banding, so it’s a non-issue for me.

What games are you playing in DV? Is there a way to tweak the DV shadow detail and peak brightness values like you can with HDR10 via the Xbox calibration app?

This last week, just FM8 and some Lego games that were on sale (Jurassic Park). Not sure DV mattered in the Lego game, but it did play in DV according to my TV.
I haven’t tried any tweaking with the Xbox calibration app, just my TV settings to make sure everything I watch on it looks good (TV broadcasts, DVDs on my DVD player, Xbox games, YouTube through the built-in app on my TV).

Could potentially be how the TV processes the signal, DV shouldn’t be worse than HDR10.

Game modes tend to turn off additional picture processing. Maybe something to do with that?

I’m Sony Oled so no DV and VRR anyway. But definitely a drop in PQ when going to game mode. I’ll take VRR and decreased input lag all day over slightly better picture.

Do pc atleast have hdr10+?

I’m sadly in the Samsung camp for my xbx so no DV for me.

What is 10+?

I got no idea what the difference between HDR10 and 10+ is.

I play it with 10 Bits, HDR, Full RGB in 2160p @120 HZ. No idea what that is.

I have a LG OLED B9.

It has HDR10 Pro whatever that is. But i have the SLA version not PLA.

All i know is:

8 Bits = SDR
10 Bits = HDR
12 Bits = Dolby Vision

HDR10+ sounds like a marketing word that has no real meaning.

I just searched HDR10+, well so that dynamicly adjusts the brightness and contrast on the fly or something. Yeah i don’t know, it doesn’t sound very helpful. I always turn off all these auto tuning things on my TV. Like dynamic contrast and dynamic colors and such.

The game doesn’t even have native HDR support on PC, so i have my doubts it has HDR10+ or Dolby Vision.

Thanks guys. I just reverted to HDR10. Readjusted the values a little bit and now it looks even better. I wonder if these calibrated HDR values (from the Xbox aop) have any impact on DV output.

Anyhow, I don’t even have to turn on VRR in HDR10 to enjoy lag free gaming. All it takes is switching to Game mode or PC mode and I’m golden.

DV may look slightly better in some ways but the gradient banding is something I cannot tolerate especially if it’s not a TV thing. Also, the fact that I have to turn on VRR in DV to get rid of input lag is a deal breaker as it lowers quality slightly to do away with lag.

If the game is limited to 60 FPS anyway, i don’t understand why you would need VRR.

I mean VRR is something like G-Sync or Freesync if i am not completely wrong. If you have a fixed 60 FPS you don’t need such thing anyway.

Correct. Most Xbox games are locked at a solid 60 or 30 fps so I’m not losing out on anything really.

Plus, I’ve read that VRR alters the gamma curve, and the overall quality and resolution do not look as crisp as with VRR off.

So there is 0 reason to use it.

I am using G-Sync since 2016, so i got no idea how the alternatives are. Bought a 27 inch ACER (XB270H) 144 HZ monitor in 2016 and a LG OLED B9 55 inch in 2020.

Although some games hiccup and stutter a lot in certain gameplay areas, like Flight Simulator. So it helps to make the 30fps appear more consistent. Although I play FS with mostly frame interpolation to make it run at 60fps albeit a slight input lag, so VRR has to stay off for that to function.

Still, nice to have it as a feature I suppose.

Yeah i can’t even imagine how 30 FPS feel. I never played that low since 20 years. The last consoles i owned were the original X-Box and PS2.

Lol it was the “buy a RGB cable” to get 10 more FPS back then. I was able to get 60 instead of 50 FPS in Tekken and such games back then. After i bought a RGB cable. Usually you only got a 3 component cable with video left and right sound cable. But the RGB SCART somehow made it 60 HZ. I had to use a trick to make it work on my TV back then. I had to only put it halfwise into the SCART slot. That way i somehow got the RGB 60 FPS and else it still worked.

It was the analog times. :smiley:

Back then i had a 55 cm TV now i got a 55 inch TV lol. I don’t need a bigger one atm. It would feel wrong and weird in the room i play.
