Reading through a lot of the posts on this forum seems to indicate a lot of folk expect a ‘finished’ bug free game upon release.
With games getting more an more complex this is never going to happen, name a big name game in the last year or two that has released bug free?
I work as a tester for a fairly large electronics wholesale website so know what its like to try stick to unreasonable release dates, budgets, estimates and not being given enough time or ambiguous requirements to test with. Forward fixes are now how things happen with this kind of thing. No matter how much manual, automation, performance or load testing is done in a test environment you’ll never replicate ‘live’ users hammering the system or servers. Bugs always get through to live that just can’t be detected in the test phase of a large release.
With regards to patches and fixes, once they are worked out and developed the fix they have to go through the whole process again of testing it in the test environments and then releasing to live again all this takes time to plan, its not just a case of someone creating a fix and pushing it live. Just finding a bug can be a nightmare as there are so many different areas and teams that need to collaborate and investigate to find the root cause…and then there are sometimes a number of different ways to fix a bug, they then have to evaluate which will be the most cost effective way with the least amount of impact to the end user.
Personally I’m happy to be a gamer in an age where games can be patched and fixed, long gone are the days of buying a bad/glitched game on a cartridge or a disc an being stuck with it…some of which costed as much as games do today.
I personally wait a while now and buy any games I want a couple of months after they release and have had the majority of bugs ironed out. A game really isn’t something to start getting stressed about. I really don’t see the hype of getting a game immediately on release day for this reason. Honestly…if you get vexed about a few performance issues or glitches then just wait a while. You’ll have a much better gaming experience for it.
It used to get to me but at the end of the day…it’s just a game.
Compare the quality of this release to Forza Motorsport 2 on the Xbox 360 (the first Forza on that console).
It’s great that games can get new content and fixes post release these days, but it’s also a great excuse to fix things that should have been fine on launch. Games only release with so many issues these days because the pre orders and first day purchases let them get away with it.
Long answer: Yes, if they’re selling me a product, it should be working correctly. If you bought a brand new car and it turned out they hadn’t installed the interior, or the engine kept cutting out, would you be happy? Would you say “oh well, they can always fix it!”?
Completely stupid comparison… a car can kill you,a game cant…ignorant post… every poece of software is updated throughout its life now. Comparing forza 2 to 7 10 years ago again is ignorant…
No, people don’t expect a complete bug free game on early access and free to play games, on a full price AAA game though?..yeah they kind of do.
Minor bugs most people can live with, and i myself have been ok, I seem to be one of the lucky pc users that’s had no crashes or stutters, other people have had a real bad experience with a near unplayable game. It’s a shame they had to release the game in time for the Xbox one x, because another 6 months work would of done wonders.
I partially agree with what you’re putting out there, but I’d have to disagree on some aspects such as bug testing and quality control.
For instance, graphical glitches or car audio shortcomings can be rectified by putting the game to test before release. Yes, this means every car on every track, with the sound turned way up, and the lights out, while playing on a reasonably good, large screen. If things have been done so well in past FM games, you can understand where all the anger is coming from, right?
However, I’m personally not mad - I kind of had it in the back of my mind that since now they are working on three versions and offering 700+ cars up front, things could get botched up, and they did. Perhaps they bit off more than they could chew, but I do not need to pass on any judgments here or my “expert opinion” because they will sooner or later fix majority of bugs and shortcomings, if not every single one. I say that going by past trends.
PC gamers shouldn’t expect any game to be problem free, but should rather breathe a sigh of relief when all those ducks form a reasonably straight row…
There was a time when console gamers were far less likely to encounter particularly irksome issues, but no, I can’t say that I expect any game to release bug free these days. Indeed, if I’m getting it at launch, I half expect it to not be playable right off, especially if it relies on online services. And double especially if Ubisoft is involved.
I don’t expect any game or software to be released completely bug free, this is practically impossible without literally thousands of hours of testing.
I do however expect a certain standard of quality in a game or software (especially an exclusive on dedicated hardware) that doesn’t just break or crash on the day of release.
There is a certain expectation that the game will mostly work bug free from day one, if not the game should have been delayed till these issues were fixed.
We are now living in a culutre were the developers know there are problems with the game yet release it anyway and patch it a week or 2 later.
With PC, there is some allowance as it’s impossible for the developers to test every peice of hardware out ther but console exclusive games should have higher standards of quality assurance.
I also have some tolerence for minor graphical cosmetic glitches or bugs that don’t affect gameplay.
Although I would sy ain my experience of this game so far (over 10 hrs) I haven’t really seen any glitches that are game breaking.
This is a full price title, £60. Even more than that when you factor in all the special ultra extra cool editions they release. It is almost 100% certain to have a years worth of DLC, as well as microtransations. If they’re going to take that much money from customers, they should push out an actual working product.
This is a AAA game, not an indie game, not a free to play game, and its not an early access title. Early access is simply there as a please preorder our product insentive. Its early access to a AAA title.
The game should be mostly bug free, and working the way it should. Bad PC ports should not exist and it should be optimized.
Now I’d had a ton of fun with this game, and not ran into that many perfomance issues on the XBOX version, but… there is a lot to dislike about this game, that said. I don’t blame T10 for this, issues like this are almost always the fault of publishers. You see it with so many publishers, and so many games now its ridiculous.
It’s not uncomparible… A full price title should not launch with this many bugs, glitches and issues. Just because everyone is jumping on the train of rushing games out full of bugs, and shafting their audiences and player bases, it doesn’t mean it should be tolerated. Now I’m not saying a game should be absolutely 100% bug free. Issues will happen, issues with anything will happen. But this game has had… a fair few more than it should have had.
Like it or not, this is a full price AAA title from Microsoft and T10. Yes it has 700 cars, yes it has more tracks. But it will also have a year long run of DLC, it will be full of microtransations, and it was full price, with preorder bonuses roped in. It has had a negative reception on launch for a reason.
I love the Forza series, more than any other racing game, and I play a lot of them. I like Forza Motorsport 7 more than I liked 6, but god some of these issues are dumb.
Perhaps not, since the software industry is conditioning us into accepting product that are uncompleted or defective . Let’s not forget it is one of the largest industry in the world, really they should amp quality. I am not just saying that for FM7.
But for any other product to have any kind of usefulness limiting problem is generally unacceptable even if the cause would be ‘software’ for example:
Coffee maker with timer that just do it 1 hour late from time to time.
Defibrillator that just give whatever voltage instead of user setting.
Remote control that randomly send another button signal then the one you press or in addition of it.
Amplifier that increase or decrease volume one notch every random amount of time.
Microwave that use defrost instead of chocolate melt function.
etc
All these type issue with various level of severeness or frustration would see the product all be returned if it happened to you on first day or on-going. But ya, software and most specifically games we must accept unfinished, unpolished, often broken functions? For what, because they are entertaining and not everyday useful? Some use those as vehicle for relaxation or otherwise. How critical to life something is does not matter when in fact we pay something you were expecting to work.
Absolutely yes. Considering a majority of the bugs in this version are the same ones from all the way back to Forza 4 with some new ones on top it is not acceptable.
Zelda: Breath of the wild. Or any first party Nintendo game for that matter. They will work as expected right out of the box.
Pokemon, any game from before DLC was invented.
I’m sorry but I don’t enjoy paying full price for something that won’t even load from the home screen two days after release without me taking my xbox into offline mode.
The reason why these games have bugs is because they don’t test them properly. I can play the game for an hour and pick out multiple issues so I don’t know how they don’t encounter them in testing. Plus this game may be new but it’s using a majority of content that was developed for previous titles so they didn’t have a full load to develop.
To reiterate. Broken products, faulty products, glitchy products, malfunctioning products should not be sold and when they are they should be fixed with no other priorities ahead of getting it right. GTA online was so glitchy when it came out I stopped playing five minutes after I launched it but story mode was spot on so I just played the part of the game that wasn’t trying to take my money. It’s the same here. Career mode works fine, I’ll stay there until they straighten out the issues plaguing Forza titles since Forza 3.
