I’ve struggled with braking in FM6 very much. In the previous titles I have been able to run a consistent pressure on all cars. I cant find a happy medium for so many cars on FM6. I’m either locking up or under-braking. Especially on turns after long straights. I like to think I’m a seasoned racer for the most part so this is frustrating.
One car in particular I am running in a Continental Sports Car Challenge series, the '08 BMW M3. I am having a lot of trouble with locking up the front tires under hard braking. I’ve played around with the balance and pressures and got it closer to where it needs to be.
I only became a tuner in FM6, so my question is there other things to consider changing that might help alleviate some of the lock up? Any other adjustments that may indirectly help? Thanks!
*The car is raced in heavy traffic, so braking is very important. It’s not like a hot lap tune where I can brake at the very last second and still be okay. I need to be able to adjust to traffic conditions.
Stock Brake balance is actually something like 60% front and 40% rear, or something like that. 70/30, whatever. There is no need to crank up the front brake balance. The fronts lock much earlier than the rear even at 50%.
The slider for brake balance is fine tuning.
Also I drive ABS off so thats important. Brake tuning with ABS on is probably different, and goofy.
Generally speaking the most effective values are between 48% and 46% brake balance depending on aerodynamic oversteer and understeer, tire size, character of the car, etc.
As you decrease brake balance you usually need more pressure to maintain trail braking feel for corner entry.
I never changed my controller settings, I just use the defaults and adapted.
You still always want the front wheels to lock before the rear. Having them both lock simultaneously is actually bad in my book. That way you get a little warning before you lock the driveline.
What braking balance and force do you use. Force is less of an issue once the balance is corrected. Personally I run anywhere from 46% brake balance to 40%. If the fronts are locking up lower the percentage number from 46% to 45%. Rinse and repeat. The skinnier the front tires compared to the back tires will also determine your brake balance. Skinny fronts will have a lower percentage of brake force applied to them (43% for example). If your car is still going straight when you are braking and turning you may also want to lower your brake balance.
