I’m curious to know what you run and / or what you believe to be the best assists for online and in the wet.
The reason I’m making this thread is in Forza 5 and 6 I managed to pull off decent leaderboard times getting within the top 1k at least on a few variants of different circuits.
I’m aware that this means a lot of people are a great deal better than myself but I’d expect in a full lobby not to be running sometimes 1-3 seconds a lap slower than a few people…
My assists are as follows (in A class):
Manual w/ clutch
No lines (don’t need 'em)
ABS OFF
STM OFF
TCS OFF (On for wet weather)
Friction Assist ON
What’s the verdict on the above?
I feel ABS OFF is different to the previous Forza’s, only a small amount of trigger usage results in the wheels locking up severely and smoke grenading everyone within a 10 metre zone into an early emphysema diagnosis. This means you have to be very careful with your braking, I wonder whether a result of this changed ABS behaviour dynamic can result in ABS ON now sadly being faster?
Manual w/ clutch (double tap AB/AX) no longer seems an advantage to me, seems sloppy and don’t see me gaining ground on the autobox users…
I normally race with manual and assists turned on but that’s me. The only time i turn traction and stability off is when I am drifting. I still use manual regardless.
I race manual w/o clutch, no ABS, no TCS, no STM in all conditions. Every now and then I turn TCS on for a car that’s completely uncontrollable without, but that’s pretty rare. It used to be that every assist was a little slower than racing without, if you could drive well enough to race without. But I can’t say if that’s still true or not.
I believe this to be true… because Josef Newgarden is just too fast with a controller and assist on… I used to be much closer on FM4/FM5/FM6… but manual clutch vs Auto/manual w/o clutch all seems the same. I think that’s T10’s way. Like little leagues around n=these days… everybody deserves to be the same and all that stuff. Don’t rewards a manual driver disadvantage him… wheel drivers are disadvantage people say to pad users… go figure a Race Simulator that recommends a pad to play…LOL
I run STM on because it was reported that it makes the wheel experience better. In FM6 I didn’t use it because it didn’t seem to do much at all. I’m slow anyways so it’s not like it really matters. I just run what I want for my own driving experience.
I’d always shy away from using STM and ABS. I haven’t come across a car / track combo that’s faster with those on.
In slower classes Manual & Clutch is a must. The higher you go up in class the less of an afvantage you get. Modern GT Cars as and LMP cars seem faster without it. The old 70’s, 80’ and 90’s F1 cars benefit from it though and they are P class and X class cars.
TCS is the same way. It’s way faster having it turned off in lower classes but the higher you go the the less advantage you get until it switches completely. Cars like the Renault R.S.17 and most LMP cars are faster with TCS on.
Friction assist is ridiculously op in the rain but it dirties your lap
I race race with all assists off all the time no matter the track, car or conditions. I’m more interested in the hardcore leaderboards then the overall, even though I try to get to the top on both.
I see this a lot. You realize you’re not the quickest in the world, but don’t understand that when coming across those top 1% racers, they’ll crush you? I’m one of those very quick drivers (top 50-100 usually at a minimum unless if its at Cataluyna where I’m just dreadful) but even I get beat by the top 10-20 players by 1-3 seconds depending on track. I find it good to always remember that if you’re not the fastest in the world, there’s always chance you’ll be humbled by someone else.
I race GT cars pretty much exclusively and my assists are as follows:
Manual
Braking Line
ABS off
STM off (unless it’s in the Lambo #63. I haven’t figured out how to combat the off throttle oversteer yet.)
TCS off
Friction Assist always off
It’s honestly never been easier to race with minimal assists.
I’ve found it to be the opposite in this game. The AI for example seems more difficult than Forza 6. I ran a 50 lap race with AI on expert on Hockenheimring. No matter what I did the AI were consistently about 2 seconds faster than me per lap at the front. The AI cars seem to have a ton of grip in Forza 7. On the GT endurance lobby I got destroyed by the front runners and was faster than the guys at the back and the wreckers. Probably 3/4 of the lobby is faster than me. I could do better on controller but wheel is much more fun and will take a long time to get decent at.
I run manual no clutch on most A class and lower. Auto on high class cars (still acclimating to wheel). I’m thinking of getting the Logitech shifter and then I will use clutch.
STM on for wheel
TCS on or off depending on circumstances
ABS off
Braking line only
Friction assist always off
It’s easier to run with no assists on for wheel players, harder for controller (atleast the ABS and TCS) for a few reasons, which are also the easiest to tell. With a controller, I will 9/10 spin out if i have TCS off when taking a corner. With ABS off I will lock the tires 9/10 as well. Now I don’t speak for everyone but myself but there are people who can race with assists off using a controller, it just isn’t as easy. So running with them on in races doesn’t hurt you in a bad way, but you won’t be as fast as the others who have them turned off.
As a controller user, I actually find it more difficult to run with ABS on. I can’t judge the distance as well. And with the trigger feedback it’s very easy to keep from locking up. I can even brake late and a bit into the turn with many cars.
I’ll mooch off this thread and ask you guys about TCS.
Every time I try to drive with TCS off, as soon as give any amount of throttle my car loses control. I’m not an idiot and know how to feather the trigger, but no matter what I do I can’t control it. I can even drive with TCS off in Assetto Corsa but not in this game. I lose 5 seconds a lap just trying to keep the car controlled out of each corner.
Is there some sort of secret to TCS? Does STM help with oversteer (I’ve never used it in any Forza game)? I consider myself pretty fast. In every car division I race regularly I get top 10-20 times worldwide, but I think I could be even faster with TCS off and I really want to learn to drive without it.
The way I counter the issue of too much wheelspin without TCS, is leave the car in a higher gear than you would normally have it in. (I.E. Hairpin you’d drop to 2nd, leave it in 3rd).
You may need to adjust gear ratios slightly to accommodate for it, but it helps significantly in cars that can’t put power down easily.
I’ll have to try this. When I run manual maybe I downshift too fast and too early like click click click in preparation for the turn. Gotta say though the G920 paddles kill my old 360 wheel. The paddles on that super annoy the wife because they’re so loud.
You can also change your rear dif setting to help keep the car from getting too loose coming off of the corner when applying throttle. A good place to start is 50/10 and go as low as 40/10. You’ll still be able to get the car loose if needed but it is easier to get back to 100% throttle.
Practice. Tons and tons of laps. Honestly, that’s it. You will be slower at first, but eventually once you how learn to control the throttle, you notice a significant improvement, or in the case of you, myself and others at our skill level, tenths of a second improvement. Just turn off TCS cold turkey and don’t turn it back on, no matter how much you struggle.
And it also helps if you join a racing league that has TCS banned so you have to learn to drive without it. In this game, like I mentioned previously, it’s never been easier to learn how to drive, and drive fast, without assists. If anyone has been considering doing so for a while, this game is the time to do it.
I try to race with all assists off wherever possible. The only exception is steering, which I leave at normal. My main reason for this is it allows me to appreciate the unique characteristics of each car and how they behave on the track.
I do wish Turn10 didn’t decide to remove the credit boost for turning off assists, I miss getting 110% multiplier for each race!
