this has been so annoying for years, I’m 33 years old and use the old way to drive dpad for steering a for gas and x for brake r1 and r2 for gears, is it so hard to put a bit of code in a game so us old school gamers can play the games how we are used to, I would pay extra for a game for this option if it’s really that hard and costs more to develop, so why do they not let the button configuration I use, as I don’t buy the games that I can’t use the dpad and buttons for driving, and I’m not the only 1, I was led to believe these games are made so everyone can play how they want,
There are no custom settings in Forza Horizon 2 - at least in the Demo. There are 13 (or sth like that) pre-sets, and the only options you have are to change Shift Up/Shift Down, Switch Clutch/Handbrake, and replace the change camera button with look back. I was simply looking for a way to get rewind off of the Y Button and switch it with the “Enter Event” button but that is not possible…
I believe that all games, especially now in this ‘next gen’ age should have mappable buttons. A mate of mine only plays shooting games that have the legacy settings. He can’t get used to the standard control settings so he will only buy games with legacy settings available. Which there aren’t many that use that setting
Not sure about Horizon 2, but in Forza Motorsport 5, you can set up your controller to exactly what you describe. If you select ‘Layout 8’ and enable D-pad steering, you get Gas on ‘A’, Brake on ‘X’, and shifting on the triggers.
While I understand the initial question (which is a valid question as well), I can only guess how long it takes before you would open a topic that the game has bad gameplay. You can’t expect decent gameplay/handling in a racing game when you want to go from analog to digital controls.
I mean, try it at home. Get in your car and each time you want to go forward, you press the throttle completely into the carpet and then need to let go very quickly again if you only wanted to drive forward 2ft. Or going around a corner; you are only allowed to full lock your steeringwheel to go around a corner and if the car turns to fast, you need to center it in the blink of an eye and then full lock again to steer again. Or try both; reverse parking with only full lock and full throttle and/or full brake.
Yes, I am making fun but that is basically your question: please let me map my controller to a completely ridiculous and unreal situation compared to how a car actually works in real life?
They don’t map to the d-pad for the same reason the gas and brake aren’t on the d-pad either. The amount of steering, gas, and brake need to be regulated with analog controls thereby allowing you to direct the correct amount of trigger or turn application as you drive. If you use a d-pad and the pad buttons, it’s all or nothing. This worked great if you’re playing Spy Hunter on the NES but games like Forza have much more complex physics models which allow you to selectively turn and accelerate as you do in real life. If you want it set up like that, all the power to you, but it is FAR from ideal.
I’m an old gamer too. The first number of my age also is a 3.
My neighbor is a PC gamer. He comes to my house and marvels at the XOne, but he says he won’t get one until they offer keyboard and mouse support. I tell him not to hold his breath and that he should get used to a controller.
It’s not hard, just practice.
The D-Pad and ABXY buttons are not sensitive enough to give you full-range control over the throttle, brakes, and steering. Plus, you’d miss out on a large portion of functionality in the vibration of the triggers as you brake and accelerate. If you could set your controls as described in the OP, I would imagine the game would actually be much more difficult.
Just take a couple hours and get used to it. Eventually it’ll become second nature. If you want to drive manual w/ clutch, try mapping the clutch to A. (The easiest and most natural for me.) You’ll get it.
ok iv had a read through all the replies, thanks for your input,I’m playing fora 5 with button layout 8 and my lap times are up there so using dpad works, with the all or nothing, it’s just the amount of money iv spend on Xbox over the years give us wot we want even if it don’t work as well for some people, iv tried to get used to the sticks and triggers but my laps are nowhere near as clean or quick and it so frustrating we will see when the game comes out
I want to know why Playground is so intent on removing control options that are available in Forza Motorsport. There’s no option to switch the “rewind” button with the “look back” button, just like the first Horizon.
I keep trying to look back and end up rewinding instead.
@The Uberchan - I think you just need to look a little harder. I believe there is a toggle option that allows these two to be reversed. I use the TX and the settings I was able to get the button combinations I use in FM5 exactly the same in the H2 demo.
I was also looking for this option and I looked everywhere. Trust me, at least in the demo, the “Enter Event” button is dedicated just for that on every controller set up and there is no mapping anything else to it. There is also no option to switch rewind/look back. I listed all the options you can toggle in my previous post way up there somewhere.
I use layout 12 (Right analog for Gas/Brake, right trigger for E-brake and left trigger for clutch) and it has been working great since FM3. Unfortunately, in Horizon 2, they forgot to implement a button to change view with in this layout. Because of this, I am forced to either change my layout or access the pause menu and change my view there everytime. Pretty stupid, considering that none of the previous Forza’s have ever had this issue.
I recommend you leave your old school way behind, the same way we moved from carburetors to electronic fuel injection. Sure, it can be harder to get used to because it’s more technical, but the results of learning to use the analog sticks, and triggers, will be allot better than using the old school way once you put some time into getting used to it, rather than simply ignoring anything that doesn’t use the D-pad.
Adapt to the future, don’t expect it to adapt to you.
