Why is the M4 so slow to accelerate?

How does a lighter and more powerful M4 lose .5 points in acceration to the M3. And .6 points to the 300 pound heavier Mustang Gt. It feels like they just gave it the 3.0L 335 HP engine out of the z4, which has the same acceleration rating and a better launch. It feels like something is wrong here.

On a positive note though the handling and sound is exceptional

Those bars for acceleration etc are not absolute. They’re relative. That’s why some cars like an Agera might have a speed rating of 9.8, but actually be slower than a Ferrari with a speed rating or 9.2 or similar.
I’m not sure why they chose to do it this way, but it causes all kinds of confusion. So if it’s only 0.5 of a point difference it probably means less than nothing. Look at the actual data from the telemetry and tuning menus to get a real idea of what the car can do. Oh, and drive it! lol

Actually the tuning menus are generally less accurate.
Plus the M4 feels slower as well, and it is slower too. Tested it out on the air strip. The M4 comes between the z4 and the m3 through the speed trap when it should be way faster then the m3

Edit: Speaking of benchmark times, the M4 is rated at 10 seconds to 100. Same as the X5 M. It should be less then 9 seconds.

Yeah. According to BMW, the M4 should get from 0 to 100 MPH in 6.92 seconds.

Car & Driver listed its 0-100 time as 8.6 seconds (in the same comparison that the 911 is listed at 10.0 seconds - maybe those numbers were used for the benchmarks?) Maybe more real world data is needed to verify an accurate number. (sub 7 seconds to 100 seems improbable for a car of that weight/power/drivetrain)

Well im loving the new M4

I’ve yet to drive it. Download still in progress. Frustratingly the M4 seems to be the last car to download for me.

If it’s slow in a straight line I guess the copious consumption of brave pills shall be in order for cornering!

I’d say that stat is a mistake. In real life the M4 smokes the M3 backwards, forwards, sideways, upside down, to infinty… It’s not even close. The car’s hp is generally underrated from the factory also.

What? The 2014 M3 and M4 are exactly the same when it comes to the engine, driveline, base-price and about 99% other things. The only noticeable difference is boot-space, a slight variation in mpg and having 4 or 2 doors to get into the car.

That is exactly the whole reason BMW was “laughed at” by several leading magazines; they made the new M-series basically in 2 flavours: one for bachelors and one for families.

/edit: on the acceleration numbers (or whatever numbers a factory gives out); those are only for the most perfect circumstances the car was tested. For instance, the 458 is listed as having 0-62mph in 3.3 seconds. But this was done on a surface with a certain temperature and while using the onboard-computer to “determine” the amount of grip on that surface on the 30th or 31st run of accelerating. Same goes for mpg; EU-manufacturers are allowed to run these tests in closed laboratories even with tires that will/can never be fitted to the consumer-versions.

Talking about the M3 coupe vs M4 there sport…

Please enlighten me on what you exactly mean? My previous comment was comparing the 2014 M3 sedan vs. the 2014 M4 coupe since there are no other body-types available at this moment for these specific cars. Also, the current 2014 M4 will run circles around the previous M3 anyways even though that was available in coupe & sedan.

I’m talking about the E92 M3 coupe in this game, which is rated higher in acceleration than the new M4 coupe in this game… which is factually inaccurate. Not the 2014 M3 sedan, which isn’t in the game.

The new Alfa 4c is also slow too I prefer the 8c

Maybe the cars are slower according to other factors too. We have debris and moisture in this game too. Maybe there are unseen effects that aren’t obvious. So a heavier car can get better grip and so better launch speeds in this game compared to FM5 or real world values, which are done on a cleaner surface?
Just a thought, as they’ve gone to a lot of trouble to tweak the handling and physics it could be just that.

Grip isn’t the problem, although the m4 burns through first. The problem is that the car doesn’t seem to have the power it says it does. On a long straight It gets obliterated by the les powerful M3, and barely beats the z4. It’s like they just stuck the z4 engine there and didn’t change the performance

The stats may be a bit off, because it didn’t seem slow to me.

The car feels waaaay under powered in this game, clearly someone messed up. It won’t beat the old M3 in a drag race.

Forza is pretty dead on.

Nice, also the person did say he did the test with warm tires and a warm track, something different in Forza and with official figures its more lab tested, so they’ve done a nice job

I agree with the op. From launch my buddy beat me in his s4. So we decided to take away the awd advantage and go from a roll . At 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 he would pull on my M4

M4 510bhp 3300 lbs (approx)
S4 402bhp and 3700lbs

I spent hours playing with gear ratios. Glad it’s not just me!!
