I’m saying that Turn 10 could follow the lead of other developers, some of whom have created system for deterring wreckers almost 10 years ago, but have instead placed the onus on paying customers, ie, the people who pay for the coffee in the breakroom, ie, you, for the reason you note.
My quarrel isn’t with you. I appreciate the efforts of those who want to do make the Forza landscape better, and only wish that viewpoint extended to the people in charge at Turn 10. I’m not in the room but, judging by some of their decisions over the years, a clean place for racing doesn’t appear to be near the top of the list.
Help out? Maybe I will…
Maybe I will. I have no illusions of my name being known far and wide in the Forza community, but those familiar with me would say that I’m clean and fair.
Last night’s session a couple players mentioned they’d heard about the marshall program - one from this forum, one word of mouth. All who spoke up agreed it was a good step.
An in-game message would be very effective, but T10 should make sure it’s got enough marshalls playing - preferably sporting the badge - for them to be evident when racers return to online play. Messaging too early could backfire, if most of the rush of returning racers don’t see any marshall activity in their first few races.
This system could serve as a function of panopticism. It is not about filling every lobby with Marshals, it is about making people think that they could be watched at any time, as to control their behavior. Kind of only works if everyone knows about it and the Marshals are anonymous, but I like the fact that the Marshal symbol is not immediately apparent such as the VIP one.
Marshals are not a good solution or alternative for a proper penalty system that other racing games have implemented. Having marshals is like having a band aid that only covers part of the wound. It’s almost completely useless.
The better solution is to do what Bill Giese (Creative Director of FM7) had boasted to media outlets back in June of 2017, that they “WILL” implement an Adjudication System (Penalty System). AR12 Gaming Giese said the new Adjudication System in Forza Motorsport 7 will penalize players who cut corners, crash out other players, or do something else that could potentially give you an advantage or wouldn’t be considered sportsmanship. These penalties will see the game “take you down,” Giese said, revealing that players who cheat or race unclean could face added time on to their final lap and race total, or have their result marked as ‘dirty’ in Rivals.
Lying about features in an upcoming release is endemic to the industry, though I have no idea of Giese himself told any kind of untruth. For all we know, he was of the understanding that adjudication would be a thing, and was told to mention it. Common practice is to trumpet as many new features as possible, and if anything isn’t included, tell disappointed fans “Sorry, we really tried. Next time, for sure.”
The more I think about this the more I think Marshals are a bad idea.
How may times have we been bashed into another player and that player retaliates on us? Nothing is going to tick me off more than to be booted out of a hopper because some griefer knocked me into another player. Unless Marshals have a “Gods-Eye-View” of the entire track, they’ll be booting players based on their field of view or what they hear from other players.
I drive “first person view”, so half the time I don’t even know who bashed me going into a turn; do I just call out the first GamerTag I see?
Or just maybe the people chosen to accept the responsibility are smart enough not to react to things they can’t determine or just hear second hand, and save replays to later review for confirmation from multiple angles before submitting a report…
But sure, people who can’t imagine doing that wouldn’t be good choices for Marshals.
With all due respect, there’s little comfort in knowing that the player who bashed you out of a podium position into last place might be reprimanded at a later time…
What this sounds like is that if you want to race clean, you need to wait a few months for the Marshals to clean up the lobbies. That’s a fair enough answer… but it’s not the solution.
Yeah in that your right, but then in the end you have to leave lobby first to check on that replay then hoping to get back in that same lobby to kick/report that person. So we still have reather the Penalty System that is promissed.
I don’t kick people based off of hearsay, I only do so after I have witnessed the incident first-hand. Normally it’s a driver spearing into another about 50m in front of me.
On a few occasions I have “sandbagged” a winnable race just to keep an eye on the back of the field, and have found a few more drivers misbehaving.
I just tweeted him too… It appears he responded to you with a canned non-committal corporate response. If the penalty system Bill Giese had said would be in FM7 has not been implemented by now, it probably never will be.
Pure speculation because I know nothing official, except I had dinner last night with the middle daughter and her son (my grandson) and now have a cold, coughing and feel terrible, BUT . . .
I wouldn’t be surprised if there aren’t adjustments in-game with next Tuesday’s content update and DLC pack.
On determinations of who is a crasher and who isn’t: the behavior becomes very obvious when someone intentionally rams another person over-and-over during the course of a race. Oh, move right now next to the pit wall and then floor it to hit as many cars in the first turn with no braking at all; nail cars every lap with the PIT maneuver instead of just passing in a regular procedure; intentionally slowing and waiting for cars passing which are a lap ahead; and joining with friend(s) with like liveries, blocking traffic while rotating targets among “friends.”
Bad behaviors raise a red flag usually on the first lap (or corner) and the offenders are just begging to be removed and/or banned.
That said, a “mistake” of not seeing someone beside your car and shunting them off-track, followed by a “I’m sorry” and waiting for the person to regain their position doesn’t make this person a “wrecker” - immediate action was taken to correct the mistake. That situation is good sportsmanship.
I believe this was the source for the penalty adjudication system rumors.

It states “These penalties won’t apply to Campaign if the player desires, as Giese said racers shouldn’t have to worry about that when relaxing in the Forza Driver’s Cup – which is the Career system in Forza Motorsport 7. However, they will apply in Multiplayer, and more specifically, eSports.”
I’m all for penalties but perhaps they were just talking about the Forza RC’s since he clearly says “and more specifically, eSports.” I think this statement can be interpreted in different ways and was purposely murky.
