V8 Crappercars Stormfront Shootout -- The case for qualifying

I’m sorry to all the wonderful Ozzies on these boards, but I have never experienced anything in a racing game as frustrating, infuriating and just generally unpleasant as grinding my way through this godforsaken tournament in these bewinged rent-a-car specials. Scratch that – the most frustrating, infuriating and just generally unpleasant experience not just in my racing game history, but my video game history in general. And that includes passing the original Prince of Persia, and getting past the tentacles in the Silo level of Half-Life, only to realize I’d forgotten to turn on the power. Thing is, I have such fond memories of those games despite all that, that I continue to return to them today. These cars and this tournament? It’s to the point where I never want to see them in a game, ever again, anywhere. I’m literally exhausted after a race in them. Spent.

Yes, it’s a bit of a rant that will likely be locked, but I also think it highlights an important shortcoming in the Forza world: standing starts with no qualifying, and forced MID FREAKING PACK placement. I honestly think that if either of these two features were added and one deleted (I know we got rolling starts when NASCAR arrived, but I can’t seem to find a way to include these in the regular career), it would just make things so much more pleasurable. Dan likened Forza to “a serious racing game” or something to that effect during post-E3 interviews this year; I call foul on that, and will continue do to so as long as Forza calls itself a serious racing sim, and doesn’t include such basic racing features – these exist at the grassest of grassroots levels – as qualifying.

So what’s the problem? Always thought the V8 supercars drove really nice and we’re way better with TCS off.

I run with TCS off. “Drive nice”? I’d be interested in hearing what your definition of “drives poorly” would look like.

Wheelspin in every corner, no matter the gear. Weird snowplowing, then instant oversteer. Zero stability.

And I want to be sure that folks know I’m talking about their performance in the wet. They’re not bad in the dry. But running them for an entire tourney in the wet is TORTURE.

Ohhhh the wet. Hmm, I can’t recall if I droves those there. I didn’t care for prototypes in wet though and that was mostly due to AI having unheard-of grip out of corners.

Yeah I’m seeing the same with the V8Cs.

Yes, I know throttle modulation is key but I consider myself a pretty good river and nowhere is power-down oversteer as present as it is here. NOWHERE.

The V8 Supercars are actually pretty good to drive, it just takes basic throttle control to keep them in check. In the wet they’re a little slidier, but assuming you avoid the puddles the wet doesn’t make them that much worse.

I enjoyed the supercar modelled in FM5 but was really disappointed with the car of the future which is in FM6. It needs tuning and actually once you do that it becomes a wet weather beast.

The Mercedes is the most stable of the v8 supercars, thats why everyone is using them so try that. You could also put traction control, stability control or notmal steering if youre using sim. Another suggestion i can give is raise your inside deadzone for throttle on the controller, for some people that dont have the greatest throttle control it can work.

Thanks for the Mercedes idea, but you can forget the deadzone thing. I have fine throttle control in almost every car except for these monsters, and I’m not about to change my settings for one tournament. I just wish we didn’t have to do it at all.

I have no problem whatsoever with the V8 Supercars in Forza, once you master driving them and tune them they are quite easy to drive hard. I am Australian though haha but we have pushed hard for turn10 to include Australian cars in Forza and its great to see more and more included since FM5. The V8SC in FM do have a loose rear end compared to say iracing and the like. However the cars in the real life V8 Supercar Championship are a proper touring car with no driving aids (TCS or STM). Great form of motorsport to watch with some very intense racing.

I actually thought I was watching a Forza reply watching the last race at hidden valley!!

I raced this league alot and I found the volvo was best in the rain and grip tracks. The merc was good all round so I stuck with the merc for every race. It took 3 days for me to adjust my driving to a competitive level, usually I can pick it up within the first session. These cars are without any doubt harder to drive than any r class gt car or s class early gt car. I didn’t enjoy this league as much as the gt lm league or this week’s bentley league. But the standard of driving is far better than publics hoppers so as long as I think it’s fair league that’s what I will do no matter how awful the car is

I’ve since passed all the V8CC tourneys in career; going to drop the difficulty for Race Drive Exp and Endurance, finish it and never…race them…again. This was one of these most demoralizing experiences I’ve ever had in a racing game. The ridiculous top 2 runaway drivatars (QUALIFYING, PLEASE, T10. IT’S ENOUGH OF THIS MID-PACK STANDING START STUFF ALREADY), the superhuman grip the AI has coming out of corners and the fact that these cars just aren’t friendly to drive really tainted the experience for me. Never again.
