Track scale – which is correct

I’ve come to notice that the track scale differs from video racing game to video racing game. In this game, tracks appear to be more expansive (wider, longer) comparted to Project CARS or F1 2015. For example if you race COTA in this game then do the same in F1 2015, the experience it totally different. In F1 2015 COTA is much smaller with straits that seem so long in this game that are truncated in F1 2015. Another track that is so confusing to drive in Project CARS is the Nordschleife. Since I have the Nordschleife memorized in this game, I get lost on the same track in Project CARS because everything seems so much smaller and narrower I don’t recognize approaching corners, it is like two different circuits entirely!!! Also, Laguna Seca seems so much smaller and narrower in Project CARS where the corner at T10 is not as daunting as in this game. So what gives here? Which track scale is correct when trying to render a real-world depiction of a circuit? I consulted YouTube on COTA and it turns out that F1 2015 is closer to real life scale. So is T10 exaggerating circuits in this game? So it seems, but the question is why???

Yes, T10 do adjust the tracks - the Nurburgring being a great example which is widened to make it better for racing (passing room basically). Oddly enough in I think FM4 when they did this it was like they put it in the photocopier and the track ended up longer as well!!!

Citation needed to prove the validity of that claim with regards to the laser scanned version that is in FM5 and FM6. To my eyes, baring a few kerbs here an there, it looks and drives the same as the laser scanned version in Assetto Corsa.

It was well known that T10 edited the ring in FM4 and prior FM games, but why go through the trouble (and cost) of laser scanning the track for FM5, and then wreck that laser scan information by doing the same as FM4 with it?

The track scale to me felt just right in F5. In Fm4, you had that zoomed out look.

And in F6, to hide some of the low-res textures and trackside objects, they’ve opted for the zoomed out look again - everything looks smaller including the cars. F5’s FOV was just about perfect from every view. It made you feel like you were IN the environment. One with the track and car.

I have been in person to COTA and the representation of COTA in Forza 6 is perfect. Maybe the only bad thing about it is that you do not get a sense of how really steep that turn 1 hill is!

I can confirm that too - I actually bought an XBOX, wheel, and Forza purely to practice 6 weeks or so before my first track weekend at COTA - the experience translated amazingly well and at no point did the track appear to be substantially different than I was expecting once I was behind the wheel. It may have helped that my car was also available.

I will say that two of the big differences for track feel between F1 and FM6 are simply driver height and actual speed. Driving more slowly always makes any road seem bigger (wider), as does being higher…

That’s interesting because F1 2016 by Codemasters contains the most accurate rendition of all F1 tracks to include COTA and when you compare the scale of that game against FM6, there exists gross exaggeration on T10 side of things.

.

Hmm…I wonder why…they should be able to convey actual steepness in the game. I wonder if it’s a constraint on the game architect overall. Hopefully in FM7 they’ll do a better job at conveying actual steepness.

Formula, I was having this discussion with someone the other day. I think one of the reasons they seem different, is the track scale and the car scale are very different. To me in forza the cars seem much to wide, which then makes the track seem small.

Example: Silverstone - you can see in this picture that you can get 6 cars on the straight in a row. In forze i dont even think you could get 4 cars in a row.

Two people in this thread have been to COTA, one as a driver, and you believe F1 2016?

Yeah, because they too have been to COTA to laser scan it for the game !!! (LOL) Also when you look at actual footage on UTube they resemble Codemasters rendition.

I’ve on track at COTA several times, one including this past weekend, and Nordschleife once as well. I do agree that although the tracks seem accurate outside of the elevation changes, the car:track scale seems too big. In other words, in real life the tracks are a lot wider.
