Would it really? I’ve seen this with several games now and its nothing new, players of previous installments get their expectation levels sky high, then get disappointed when the new game doesnt (and cannot) live up to it and mayhem ensues. Generally speaking the atmosphere gets such then that people who dont share the negative feelings stay away from the forum and dont really return.
I remember back in the FH3 days things were the opposite, one could get crucified on the forums by certain forum members who appeared to police threads and attack anyone who dared to point out issues with the game (usually by saying they were lazy and entitled for not liking having cars locked behind weekly timegated challenges which was the main issue with FH3 at the time as the franchise went over the precipice of heading towards games as a service).
Both that past behavior and what we see now are wrong. Like has been said, it’s fine to have (even potentially heated) discussions regarding the game, but as soon as someone resorts to personal attacks, and/or false statements of words/motives a line has been crossed into toxic territory which unfortunately seems to happen pretty regularly here (and on Discord) as long as I’ve been around.
As a side note, I would say that in my observation some people also tend to confuse negativity (or presentation of ideas they don’t agree with) as toxicity but I would define toxicity as how resistant a community is to free and open discussion. A community that’s all sunshine and rainbows on something that attacks anyone who says otherwise is likely much more toxic than a place with significant negativity but anyone feels like they can share their ideas without being attacked.
I’m not sure this forum qualifies as toxic. There are a lot of toxic forums or there. At least some of the negativity in this forum is legitimate.
And of course there are going to be disagreements between members. This game dips into a lot of disparate pools. The fans it grabs are bound to be at odds with one another. As a fan of hardcore physics, I’m going to be at odds with anyone who likes the game for its accessibility, just like as a fan of open-world, open-ended racing games I’m going to be at odds with anyone who enjoys a more narritive driven, linear experience. All those opinions are legitimate, but I’m still going to fight tooth and nail for my opinions to be considered more important because that’s what’s going to make me enjoy the game more.
Well if people think this forum is toxic they obviously didn’t experience the TDU2 forum everything was Toxic on there if you dared to speak of the bugs and issues in that game you got instantly shouted down by some people and told its how the games industry works games are released with bugs that the devs then fix, and those like me that were in as part of the Beta team weren’t allowed by the moderators to mention anything about the beta testing even after the game was released if you did you got suspended from the forum for a few days and told if you carried on you would be permanently banned, and in games was just as toxic with people just following others around ramming and grieving them. So by that standard this forum is tame. lol
I’m tired of this toxic game. It’s annoying and tedious. So much is buggy and broken, I’m down to playing one evening per week to quickly grind through the minimum challenges to win both vehicles. At this rate, I’ll be gone in a few weeks. I had planned to pre-order FM8. Thanks to FH5, forget it. Fool me once…
Whenever I have questioned why a game is released with bugs on other gaming forums, I always get told its how the game industry works release the game fix bugs later, but it’s only become that way because people accept it as the norm,.
I agree. It’s a lame excuse. But you also got this answer from people who have no idea what is going on in the studio, what are the owners requests. Then you have players who want their product even if it have parts broken and play that same game regardless. And not last, we play on different platforms. Would it be better to release any game just on XBone and leave Series and PC players waiting until everything is perfect? Or vice versa?
Look also at all the good reviews the early release got. It still has 92 on Metacritic. If the studio shifted the release for 5 or 6 months fans would be mad. Remember how DJS said it’s the best game ever?
Or look at any review for FH5. Do you see any mention of any bugs? Because I don’t.
Maybe we should change our approach and buy games after several patches? Maybe that way we could expect a better quality product? Anyway there will always be at least a few bugs even in those best games ever.
This is because the reviewing method is flawed.
I’ve played my fair share of highly rated games: God of War, The Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 2 to name a few. If we talk of GOTY contenders the list expands to the likes of Uncharted, Red Dead Redemption, Batman Arkham trilogy, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and I’m now playing through Ghost of Tsushima. All of these (even Odyssey from the maligned Ubisoft!) gave me more fun than Forza Horizon 5, in many different ways, and all are more polished than FH5 (maybe not TW3 at release). Then there’s games in their 80s and even 70s which I had more fun with. Too many to list.
Remember Cyberpunk in 2020? CDPR gave reviewers the PC version only, and IIRC they only let reviewers play specific sections of the game. Result? 80+ metascore and people flocking to preorders. I was one. When it released and the console versions were the way they were, that’s when we saw the damage.
With Forza Horizon 5 it wasn’t much different from that. Microsoft gave the game to all these people a full month in advance, but restricted them to showing only certain bits. When it released, lots of things weren’t working, the promises of better sounds weren’t fulfilled, the “new thousands of parts and engine swaps” came down to “Race 7-Speed Transmission” and “6.8L V8 Diesel” 500x, the Playlist actually got more grindy and worse, and the game itself just didn’t feel right. 2 weeks in I was already burnt out.
It’s the FH4 loop all over again, but in a worse game with less content (believe it or not!), so it’s pointless to keep playing. I want to try new stuff and FH is holding me back.
I tell you that Forza Horizon 5 does not have “only a few bugs” and to call it “best racing game ever” is to ignore 40+ years of racing game history with tons of games that, in their time, were more fun to play than FH5 is right now. Some of them still are, and some of them are earlier Forza Horizon games.
You totally missed the fact that there were some (I guess some from the press too) that played the full version one whole week before Premium. DJS was one of them too. Yet nobody talked about bugs.
They all build up hype and so the expectations fly to the roof. And when you can’t meet those expectations you will get disappointed. That is what a lot of you got their frustrations most. Look at how many complain about the game being a chore, boring and not fun at all. That is different from those that complain about broken stuff. You can fix to one point a broken game. The feeling of boredom is way more complicated.
FH6 is still far away. This is what you got now. And changes to the core game are limited.
There was an NDA and the preview version allowed only first 90minutes of the game without multiplayer (so most of the bugs hidden).
btw most of the ppl/press articles mentioned that
That is a different version. Just look at DJS Achievement list. He got the first one on 28th of October. And I think you missed the 400k Accolade Points he had on 5th of November.
I don’t remember if you can earn 400k just from the campaign. If you can, that’s pretty much the point.
For people who only played through the campaign with limited online interactivity, the game is pretty good, if short. You have to dig deeper to find the bugs. Difference between 4 and 5 is that in 4 you had to dig much deeper than in 5. Since most of the bugs are related to online features/Playlist and there wasn’t an online population unti the 5th November, it doesn’t make much sense to claim FH5 was “bug-free” at release.
Then there’s the fact the game simply isn’t 90+ material. The stories are badly written, the characters aren’t endearing, the map is bigger but doesn’t feel so, seasons have little impact on the world, there’s zero sense of progression since you already start with very capable cars, collectible hunting has been the same since FH1, and the game itself feels same-ish next to FH4.

It’s not for players (specially not for you) to decide the meta score. For you it means nothing but for new players it does. And the user score for FH5 is still 8.6 not so far from the critics. Just for the sake of comparing to Cyberpunk. That game got 56 for PS4 and 3.6 user score.
And you know what. There are user reviews for FH5 that have 0 scores. This game is zero. XD
digging???

digging???
That will be one if the expansion packs

Yeah, history has proven this to be a super effective method of control time and time again.
On topic. I don’t really have any issue with said toxicity. That’s primarily because I rarely deviate outside of painting. Not a whole lot of idiocy going on there. Sure, there’s some designs I’d consider of questionable effort/quality, but I also started from nothing so I give nothing but constructive advice just as I was given. I figure treat everyone as what they are: just some other bloke. If anyone wants to get ugly, get ugly back with them. Simple as that. Even setting attitudes and internet arguments aside, if you don’t like a fair portion of content within some subforum… do like I do and stick with the ones you do like. Then again, there are other external boards which offer better accommodation for certain aspects of the game. Yes, aside from here on FM net, as noted in OP.
