Tire Compound VS Tire Width

Hi,
if you got only a few PI´s to spend to reach the class you want to, and you got the choice between Tire Compound- or Width, witch do you choose and why…?
thanks for answers…

Depending on situation

For wet track you want narrow tires with as soft compound as possible, because narrow tires cause less drag in puddles, and threfore gives you more control if you have to go “trough a river” (like Brands hatch, Sebring, and Eau Rouge at Spa)

In dry conditions lower compound, and wider tire result as less “snappy” grip, starting and ending possible slide more smoothly, which results in smoother, and more predictable handling.

depends on the why…

you wnat it for drag?? drift?? circuit race??

a good solution it to combine both…use middle width with middle compound…

thanks for your replies…only for circuit race, I don´t drive drag or driftracings

Never hurts to go wide on your drive tires, but I ussualy go wide before compound. More surface area to the road can ussually handle harder cornering, but may result in some understeer at first. You can tune that out though.

My first choice is usually wider tires as PI hit is much less. In lower classes, wider tire is often the only option available.

Tire compound upgrade is grip increase for BOTH front & rear therefore if grip is needed only at one end (usually the rear) then it is a waste of PI to upgrade the compound.

In higher classes the speed and cornering forces are much higher so tire upgrade is beneficial but only if tire width is inadequate.
