So we’ve all managed to take a peek at the latest update with the new HUD for public/private lobbies. I think it looks very slick, barring a few things. What has Turn 10 got spot-on with the new feature and what does anyone think needs improving on for the future?
It’s a nice addition. I’m not sure whether ESL had any input into what they’d like or whether T10 just winged it, but I do find the layout and design a bit inefficient. I reckon they could have got far more useful info onto the screen by listing the cars vertically down one side instead of along the top - they could have had more than 4 on-screen at once and it would have looked better as well as been more useful.
Small crit tho, I’m just glad they added something.
While I can understand the idea of a ticker at the side of the screen (like the one that was created for the ForzaRC and updated manually) there are a lof of downsides with this, leading to the bar on top being superior to such a feature.
If you put everything from top to bottom on the side, you will struggle a lot with different gamertags (length), additional info and nearly every small logo (for exmaple grid positions).
They will reach into the center of your picture, distracting viewers a lot. It´s great for a simple ranking list, but not really good if you want to add additional info. That´s also why NASCAR does that at the top, while F1 uses top-to-bottom (but 3 Char driver names instead).
Adding 3 char-drivernames out of Gamertags will lead to even more confusion
Keeping the center clean to see the action unfolding is the main priority for such broadcasting layouts.
Both ways got their advantages and disadvantages, but I think the topbar is the best one right now. But hey, there are many ways
I definitely like the new HUD, I’ve spectated a few races today. What I would change, however, is the scrolling of the ticker. It should be either continuous, like in real TV broadcasts or we should be able to scroll it how we want. Because right now the ticker stays put for a few seconds then suddenly drifts to the next set of drivers. There’s not enough time to read all the data. I think a slow, continuous scrolling would be better. That said I think it’s a great addition and it’s remarkable that Turn 10 still develops and updates the game, more than a year after release.
I think that’s only because the ESL broadcasts were making the game look bad. T10 are enthusiastic about eSports and didn’t want to wait another year to fix a feature that eSports needs.
Now if only we can find a way to convince ESL that they need Mugello and Suzuka in the game…
