The Noisy Cartographer

People play these games in all sorts of ways, racing, tuning, painting, that silly sideways thing the kids do, used car salesman simulation in the auction house, etc.

Me, I like exploring and finding things by driving every inch of road in Horizon as soon as I can get out of the tutorial/opening sequences. I’ve done it in all three previous Horizon titles and well, I’ve done it again now in Forza Horizon 4 and got the shiny achievement to prove it.

While there is some concern that this map, being roughly the same size as the one in FH3, might not offer much more in terms of exploration and discovery, those concerns will be quickly be rubbished once you get out there in the world.

Make no mistake, this map is absolutely gorgeous and chock-a-block with things to do and things to find, roads to travel and experiences to have and share.

That said, for those of you hoping to get this achievement, here are some tips:

  1. Don’t assume you’ve driven all the way to the end until you’ve actually driven all the way to the end and over it.

  2. Don’t assume driving down one direction of the motorway records you driving down both directions. Similarly, when two roads are very near to one another, don’t assume that driving one gets you credit for the other.

  3. Ramps on and off the motorway are notorious for hiding unrecorded bits of road, take a minute and drive them fully. Roundabout entries and exits are much the same, make sure to drive both.

  4. Playgrounds/Skills areas often contain a number of trails, make sure to drive them all.

  5. Remove all icons from your world map and then zoom in to get better view.

  6. Use the minimap to really see where you might be missing a spot.

  7. Be patient, with over 500 roads, this will take a good bit of time to accomplish.

Forgot the most important tip of all, make sure you’re having fun out there exploring and not just rushing to get every bit of road recorded. The scenery is incredible, make sure you’re looking up from the map regularly to take it all in and enjoy it.

Guess this an old guy thing Hiero,as I too enjoy doing this, not saying you are old, maybe mature is a better word.

I think wanting to do it shows the level of craft in the Game world, 1st game I wanted to do it on was GTA IV. Although that was more just to watch the crowds and see the city which at the time were amazing.

Take a moment to experience all the work the art department put in to make a world rather than a blurred back drop.

Will say I never did it on FH3…Australia didn’t inspire much but having played a bit of FH4 I’m going to enjoy it. Especially given I live close to Bamburgh Castle and Edinburgh is my favourite city.

Good morning sir, thanks again for the walkthrough, it was a blast and left me totally excited for FH4 release day.

Best wishes and regards.

First time I’ve encountered “rubbished”. It looks and sounds weird. I can’t decide if “garbaged” is better, worse, or merely comparable.

Would you have been happier if he said trashed?Hiero always has had a way with words!!!

Nah, I’d say I’m happier - or at least more entertained - to have encountered the oddity.

If the demo is anything to go by the detection on driven roads seems quite generous. In the area around the festival site there are quite a few off road sections tightly packed together and I noticed that when I drove close to them, but not on them (for instance a triangle of roads) I was able to see the road counter go up just driving past both ends of a short road.

The way offroad sections are shown on the map with dotted lines could also hide “missing” sections, but as you say, if you actually drive down every bit of road, or keep your eye on the roads driven counter appearing when you complete one you should be fine.

I suspect I will be getting the all roads driven long before I get near finishing the full Festival story line.

Also like the point about looking up from the map and enjoy the scenery. Being a Brit there were so many little touches in the demo that look immediately familiar - plenty of “oh snap” moments. Looking forward to the 28th

I play the same way. Get through the intro and then drive every road to get them mapped. Smash obvious boards. Then go through looking for the remaining boards, work on skill points for the perks and then finally get to the actual game play. Not the right way, not the wrong way, just my way, you do you and enjoy!

Bug? Missing 2 roads. 529/531
I seem short of 2 roads but the achievement for driving down every road (The Noisy Cartographer) has been unlocked. Are there roads that are locked away till a later point in the game?

EDIT: Mod moved my post? No problem with that but it doesn’t answer my question if that achievement means I have found every road…

Same here, I did found one road after the achievement, so now I’am at 530 and can’t find the last one, have tried every trick in the book, brightness and such. annoying!

I am at 514 roads out of 531. The map is completely explored, I sixtuplechecked it. I figured ok, maybe there are additional roads in Winter that can’t be driven yet. Then I drive over a piece of road that is fully explored and boom, 515 roads explored. That makes it impossible to find the actual parts that are not explored even though the map says they are.

It’s not broken at least I don’t think so, I’m at 530/531 and I got the achievement. I tried looking for the last road, but my eyes started hurting so I stopped. Check under highway and large dirt road gatherings.

I’m missing one road, and I’ve already been awarded the achievement, so I know it’s one of those small slivers. I told myself I would avoid it this time and never leave a road unfinished, but here we are. I’ve got a few images of my map down below if anyone wants to take a look, but for those that don’t: any tricky roads that you had trouble finding?

What’s the criteria for completing a road find anyways? I’ve be offroading it and been getting finds just by passing by one? Do you just have to touch the road or do you have to drive onto it for a bit?

If you just need to touch the road, then drive circles around the map until you touch every road - get yourself a destructive skill boost vehicle max it out and go for a drive collect skill points while completing it.

If not then you’ll have to start all over again.

So I’m at 529/531 roads discovered yet the achievement popped for me. Are the other two roads not out yet (ex: one special road added for each expansion to travel to that expansion), or is it a bug, or am I just blind?

All 531 roads are drivable. The achievement just seems broken in that it counts 529/531 as completed.

So as the title says, I received “The Noisy Cartographer” Achievement for driving down all the roads , But for some reason I am still missing 2 roads. Anyone have any idea why this is?

Yes, the achievement pops for everyone at 529; I’d guess it’s deliberate to save people’s sanity! For what it’s worth, my last two were a sliver of red road at a junction, and the driveway for the Croft in the Highlands.
