Some insight on why it took 8 months to build the Rolls-Royce Wraith

So found this awesome report, which you can find by clicking here or the link below, bout why it took so long to build this car and how must detail Turn 10 actually puts into these cars such as the millions of LEDs the car has in the ceiling to make it appear as stars to having to create all new animations for the hood ornament that retracts when in park. Obviously some people are going to call [Mod Edit - WSD Implied profanity] on this but being someone who does 3D modeling and animation, trust me it takes a long time to model these cars in such detail and considering they probably have a somewhat small team that works on these DLC cars, I could imagine taking so long. Which is exactly why a lot of the cars in Forza 4 aren’t in Forza 5 btw, Forza 5 runs on a brand new physics and graphics engine and when you redo the engine, you have to completely re-model your material such as tracks and cars that’s also why they went ahead and laser scanned most of the tracks this time around and also why some of the DLC cars were cars from other Forzas cause if they’re going to spend hundreds of hours modeling these cars, they should be paid for it, figured I’d talk bout that issue for those who are complaining bout why Forza 5 didn’t have a lot of cars or tracks or why they make us pay for cars we’ve already drove and etc.

That’s cool to know! Thanks for posting it. I feel smarter now. (no sarcasm!)

Haha I thought it was pretty cool myself, I knew they spent a lot of time modeling and animation for the cars but it’s always cool just to hear how much detail Turn 10 puts into these cars and plus learned a few things bout the Wraith that I didn’t know.

Cool. The only problem i have is that the hubcaps of the wraith move. Normally the RR logo on the wheel should stay in place. that’s a rolls royce specialty as far as i know^^

That is actually an option these days, My father has a 2011 Phantom and a 2013 Ghost. The phantoms center stays still whilst the ghosts spin around.

“Wraith is a Rolls-Royce through and through. The classic 2:1 proportions of the wheel to body height remain, as does the long rear overhang, self-righting wheel centres and signature rear-hinged coach doors”. They actually say that all their wheels have the self righting centres - for the Ghost as well.
Quoted directly from the Rolls Royce website - would guess it is a problem for the engine that FM5 uses and wasn’t worth the time and effort to sort (unlike the Emblem which while hard is still doable with the engine as it is - just required some specific coding).

Shhhh! Don’t say that too loud or Rolls will make T10 pull the car from FM5 for not being 101% perfect.

Hey, their motto is “the best or nothing” after all! No, wait a minute… “Our Royce doesn’t actually Rollover?” I’ll get it eventually, just give me a moment…

Do you have any idea how hard it would be to model this? Near impossible as far as I know with the way the wheels are detailed, they would have to code this just for that car, and change it for when wheels are changed, ect… these reasons are most likely why you’ll never see spreewells (rims that keep spinning when stopped) in Forza games.

I can’t even fathom the pain in the rear this would be to do.

Honestly I don’t think it’s so much bout the pain in the rear it would be because so far we know Turn 10 would do anything as far as detail I mean with the retracting ornament and they even did the thousands of LEDs in the roof of the car like in real life, that’s insane detail. I think it’s just impossible, DLC almost always ADDS stuff to the game, doesn’t modify it, if they did this they would have to modify the physics engine and add a coding simply for these wheels but the game’s already out so I’m fairly sure they can’t modify the physics engine, if they could then game’s could modify there graphics engine constantly and just make them look better and better overtime. If it was possible, Turn 10 would’ve done it, but I will say I would be VERY surprised to not see this in Forza 6, I mean they add so much detail that I’m still finding new stuff. Last week I was driving the GMC Cyclone and noticed that the time on the stereo was actual real time, freaked me out lol then 2 months ago I found out that the mileage each car reads is actually how many miles you’ve drove in that specific car, its insane how much detail they put into this cars.

Good ideas.

The real reason is that you must polish and wax ANY Rolls for 8 months before scanning it.

What’s amazing about this is that they gave us the Wraith for free!

Agreed, the retracting ornament was really nothing but adding a few animations while the self centering centers would’ve had to done something with the actual physics engine.

Nice article.
I think the Rolls is a nice addition to FM5 but my guess is most of the time taken for the attention to detail stuff will be wasted on the more racer minded Forza fans like me.

How much better could this game be with no Forza Vista?I don’t suppose we will find out as long as the zoomed in animations are part of selling the game.

I suspect the car (and the Infinity cars) were added for free because the manufacturers sponsored this DLC???

I’m all for free content. But if the manufacturers didn’t sponsor this pack I disagree with the car choice again for this DLC. …Yeah I know that people like to race all sorts for cars, but I still think it should be a priority for turn 10 to add some modern prototype race cars and GT cars (Toyota P1, P2 race cars, Daytona Prototypes, C7 GT car, Audi R8 GT3, SLS GT3 car, BMW Z4 GT, etc…) After all this is a circuit racing game. (based on my observation that there are no point to point or open road tracks in this game) As much as I love all things motorsports and as much as I enjoy checking out all of these legendary cars in Forza Vista, the game desperately needs to have more purpose build circuit racing cars.

On the other hand, Horizon is a street racing game. I absolutely think they should include the Rolls Royce cars, and all sorts of classics, muscle cars, hot hatches, interesting / weird cars, and modern hypercars in that game. And like the first Horizon, they should leave out all the race cars as they have no place on the streets.

Everyone complains about having ForzaVista now, but if we ever get VR support, I think you guys will be changing your minds…

I like the autovista. I don’t think it “took up resources” to the extent others say.

Why must people always complain bout something? People are literally complaining bout this Free DLC and now they’re complaining that Turn 10 spends too much time on detail of the cars instead of making cars look awful and sound awful like some other games? lol This car pack was two big accomplishments for the forza series and I can saw Forza Vista doesn’t take up any time at all, literally all they do is implement the free cam system that you have when taking a pic during a race in the menu. The interior would still be just as textured with or without vista considering there’s cockpit camera in the game so really the only thing they have to add is textures for the inside of the doors, under the hood, the motor, and the trunks and animations for when everything opens and that really doesn’t take up anytime, I work on 3D modeling/animating myself. The modeling of the Engine is the only thing that would take up a decent amount of time which is why most cars in the game you can’t view the engines however I prefer very detailed and beautiful cars, over 1,200 play dough cars any day, visuals add to the immersion just as much as anything else in this game.

The models in Forza 5 are indeed spectacular, it’s like having a very expensive 1:18 scale car collection! It must be maddening to design a car system that can account for all the little foibles various cars will have. I also agree that cars like the Wraith and say the old F-100 (two of my favorites) really belong in Horizon rather than FM5. It’s as if these cars are included primarily for ForzaVista.

One area in which they can improve is grease and grime. The engine bays of the cars, even the new ones, are far too clean. Also classic race cars like the 250 GTO should have cracked leather and faded materials. These elements are preventing the cars from reaching that next level in realism.

The whole point for “Forza Motorsport” is too get game lovers to become car lovers and car lovers to become game lovers, it’s not all about racing like some people think. This game is about motorsports so racing is there but that means racing anything, there’s motorsports for everything and I’ve seen people race anything and everything in real life, even lawn mowers for crying out loud. These cars are put into the game cause too someone these cars have a very personal meaning too them and they want to see what it’s like to race or just plain drive them like they were brand new, also why all the cars are perfectly clean in vista cause they’re meant too look like they did when they first came off the lot. Point is if these cars mean the world to you then you’re going to spend hours tuning them to learn to make them compete against others and tbh it’s just plain fun to do wacky races. Racing isn’t about winning, is about forming a bond with the vehicle of your choice, any professional racer will tell you that, if you ask them off the track of course lol
