If I finish a race and quit the game out on the highway, will I lose my progress? Do I have to return to my house, enter and leave it, and save from there?

The game is constantly saving so you shouldnt lose any progress

Yeah, except for when it’s not. You don’t know when so if you finish a race then instantly quit out you could lose progress. That’s why we suggest returning to a house to make sure it’s saved.
You can take your chances with the “just turn it off” method, but at some point you WILL come on here complaining that your save is borked!

I’m not too sure how saving works with games on a PC, but when on Xbox all of your game progress gets automatically uploaded to the Microsoft servers. This is so whenever you either install the game again, or need to get a new Xbox, your save data will automatically download and sync. So, if you’re playing on Xbox, try getting help from Microsoft about how to fix the saving issues. But if it’s PC, I suggest to save as much as you can to avoid file/data corruption or else you’ll lose your progress in the game. I wish I could manually save on my Xbox, but no files really exist, hence why you constantly have to download the save data everytime you reinstall the game. Hope this helped a little. And I hope your and anyone else’s game starts to save normally again. 
There are 2 moving circular graphics towards the bottom right of the screen, The smaller one shows when the game is being saved.
I finished an event once and quit without going to the main festival site or a house and was a bit alarmed that when I next came to play the game, my progress had not been saved. It wasn’t a major thing and in any event I have 2 consoles and alternate playing between the 2 machines. If I ever get a corrupted save, I can go to the alternate machine and load in the save on that console. On a Playstation 3 it was easy to backup saved games on a USB memory stick. Microsoft have said that games are saved both on the user’s hard drive and their servers but I’d rather be safe than sorry.
I now always take a few seconds to exit the game by entering the main festival site, exiting the site, waiting for the circular graphic to disappear, going into a menu, pressing the XBOX button to go home and quitting from there.

you shouldn’t lose any progress The game is saving constantly so you don’t have to go back o the house to save data
Wouldnt you rather be safe than sorry
A lot of people lost progress in fh3 when it didnt save properly
Just have to make sure that the little save circles stop spinning before turning off
If they keep spinning its not saving properly
