I find the calculation of the penalty rather unfair. I like to play endurance races but its contribution to the safety rating is similar to a 8 minutes race. Doing a clean 1h race without a single penalty should deserve much more !
I suggest to compute the safety rating with the average elapsed time between penalties. By the way, track limits should not have the same impact on the total rating than collisions. It is easy to miss a braking point with used tyres.
There are many systems out there are decades old with much more reasonable and meaningful metrics. I highly recommend a review (or game time with the many other better solutions) The basics of the best rating systems is “per each corner”. Each corner results in adjustment. Configuration, environment and conditional weighting (and more) can be combined with this basic as well.
Doing 2 hours on an egg shaped 5 mile test course with massive banking for two corners is dramatically less involving than 2 hours of LeMans or Monaco.
imo, track limits should not count to safety rating at all, but rather to skill rating. I mean by you cutting the corner literally no one gets affected except for yourself.
