While we’re monitoring the Troubleshooting Hub for bugs around AI behavior we’d also like to get specific feedback from the community to find any patterns. If you’ve experienced inconsistent or unexpected behavior, please provide the following info:
Your Difficulty level: (have you noticed if changing your Difficulty level improves the AI behavior?)
Your Car or Division:
Tour or Track:
Specifics: (Is this a driving line issue? AI leaving track or coming onto track dangerously? AI targeting you? Unrealistic speed or cornering? Multiple AI cars acting the same way or one behaving unlike the rest of the field?)
Adding any video or even pics you have of incidents is very helpful for the team, especially if you see behavior that repeats under the same circumstances. Thanks for your feedback! Also please upvote this THUB topic and add details if what you’re observing seems more like a bug than a system that could just be better optimized:
Difficulty Level: 6-8 (changing the level does not change behavior significantly; all it does is lessen or strengthen the abnormal behavior)
Cars/Division: Multiple (across the board)
Tours/Tracks: Multiple (across the board)
Cars regularly run off track entirely of their own volition, regardless of your relative position to them. Often, they do not recognize your presence in corners, and will drive into you. On higher difficulties, pursuing cars will drive into the back of you at high speed. If alongside a car in a corner, that car will veer far off the track. There is a breakaway of three cars in every race that will pull away from the rest of the field and drive at levels faster than even human drivers can manage. All AI drivers brake erratically and at inopportune times anywhere on track. The following video was taken during a practice session at VIR, in which I was brake-checked by an AI driver while drafting down the long main straightaway.
I’m sure there are more issues, but this is what I regularly observe every play session.
@T10ManteoMax This feedback sums up the problems quite well i think. Racing on Level 8 from my perspective.
My only comment would be that I’m not convinced it’s just the top 3 who pull away. My own impression is that what seems to happen is that, once the carnage of lap 1 has ended and the race settles down, any car ahead of you will lap at near optimum pace and the cars behind you will fall back. As such, you either end up stuck in no-man’s land for the rest of the race as you can’t catch the cars ahead and no one behind you catches up (which is fairly dull) or you slowly hunt down each car ahead of you in a fairly linear fashion. It’s rare to actually get involved in a battle with more than 1 AI.
I haven’t noticed any difference across different car types/divisions. The AI is particularly inclined to drive off track on certain events though - Indianapolis is one where they really struggle.
Difficulty level: 5-8
Car/Division: ALL
Tour/Track: ALL
Specifics: The Ai simply have no sense of awareness of the player. They completely disregard your car’s position always, if you’re in their way or on the driving line, they’ll ram you to get there. I can stop middle of track, other games cars go around, this game they ram into you (on purpose!)
The brake checking during the easiest bends and corners is infuriating!!! Are they designed just to troll?! This is actually my biggest gripe with the AI. The ramming is bad, whatever, I just ram them back (yay motorsports :/) but the brake checking makes me turn the game off because I end up getting penalties for it.
Also, even on the highest difficulty, if I pass an AI, they just completely go to sleep and give up, allowing me to pull miles away. This takes away a lot of enjoyment and competitive feeling. Make the AI Competitive!
Adding to this, the AI simply cannot merge on tracks like Indy, Silverstone, Maple Valley when leaving pit road without taking out several trackside objects and cutting across multiple corners, often crossing into your driving line. I don’t have any captures handy, but this can be easily replicated.
I have a screenshot of this pitlane merging problem. Happened to me a lot.
Difficulty: 6
Car/Divison: Multiple
Track: Homestead-Miami (although the same issue happens at lots of circuits)
See below a screen capture made by me. All the AI cars that can be seen in the grass had just left the pitlane. I even had to rewind the race because they merged back into the track right in front of me, causing a collision. I’ve seen this multiple times on this circuit.
Difficulty 5-6 and I find the AI breaking at random positions all the time and causing collisions, not just early breaking into corners but sometimes down the middle of a straight.
For me to drive safe I have to stay back early in a race however when I do I find the front 2-3 cars break away and can’t be caught even when driving really well (this is only on difficulty 6+). Leaves the only option to play dirty myself and not try and keep safe behind the poor AI.
This happens pretty much every race but no videos sorry as I can’t seem to save replays in game. I get the floating car on the starting grid whenever I try to play a saved replay.
The AI simply crossed in front of me in order to go to the pitlane. This shows the small awareness they have. I guess the game tried to ghost the AI car in order to prevent further damage. Nevertheless, this is very frightening during a race/practice, especially if you are not aware that the car will be ghosted.
P.S.: I could not post a video of the issue, so I took a screenshot of it.
I’ve noticed that with the AI giving up as well. Chase them down for a whole lap with just a second between you and the AI, but once you get pasts them they drop off 5-10 seconds a lap slower.
Edit: what emphasises this more is when you have a penalty, let’s say 2 seconds, the AI doesn’t stay close enough to punish you for it. You could be lapping 1 second faster and then when you take the lead you have in mind that you need to finish 2 seconds ahead to cancel out the penalty, but within a lap you finish 1st place with a 12 second lead and the penalty is irrelevant.
AI does not shift realistically. Due to the custom race settings most of the field was in the same car. I would have to shift into 4th due to the redline. The AI car I was next to would continue on in 3rd gear for a considerable time before shifting itself. I can only assume it was waiting until it was 1 RPM below the engine damage point before it was shifting. As far as I am concerned this is cheating by the AI.
I have also noticed the 2 pack problem where the cars in front all run off, while the remaining cars remain behind the player. What I noticed in particular is that the car behind the player will most of the time panic when they get anywhere near the player. Every once in a while, it will instead dive into tne next turn so hard that it can’t remain on the track and either fly off the track, or ram the player who had no reason to anticipate a passing move from so far back.
To be completely honest all turn 10 has to do is play the game and they can save their own videos of these behaviors.Even in practice sessions cars run off the track at the same points pretty consistently.
Then in the race, 1st lap obviously major problems driving with eachother, i kind of think allowing them options to choice of lines sounds like a good idea on paper but there arent that many in reality and what happens is they all choose different lines in to a turn that then converge at turn exit.
When the pack thins out they are better with eachother, but fall a part when the player comes near them. Even though they are seemingly trying to race cleanly they often take this to the extreme and would rather drive off the track then have contact with the player. Hard nut to crack because many players are bad and dont race clean, so any contact with the ai in tight racing they will always blame the ai even if it was the players fault.
The other issue with the ai is if you pass them, they no longer race, their pace drops off a cliff. An easy way to see this is by noting their practice pace and your own, i often start from the back so depending on where p1 is after lap 1 ill know if i have the pace to catch them. If i know im 1 second a lap faster and theyre 5 seconds away ill catch them in roughly 5 laps. So to see after passing them theyre dropping lets say 2 seconds a lap theyre not racing anymore.
I know its been said that theres no rubberbanding, but after passing them which used to happen in past forzas as well they just give up and you just drive away. I think this should be looked at because theres sometging that causes them to pretty much stop putting in laps that they were apparently capable of before you reach them.
Brake checking. Every track, every division and every Forza game. Make it stop. For the love of god and all that is holy make it stop. It should never happen ever. It teaches people the worst most unskilled thing to do possible in racing. Just take that ability out of the AI. Yes it targets me. Every single trial in Horizon it targets me. It targets me in FM. All the time no matter what I am doing and AI is present. Drives me nuts.
I usually find its competitive at the first few corners
Some AI stop abruptly
Some AI ram into you
Then the pack spreads out
Then you get groups of cars with the main 3 way out in front.
I don’t see a lot of overtaking from the ai, unless theres a clear opportunity.
I do think they could be a bit more aggressive with their attempts, much like Asset Corsa Competizione without ramming you, although I understand collisions will take place.
The AI is not too bad, they are just incredibly hard to catch at later levels and a bit too Gran Turismo at lower levels were they just meaner about waiting to be overtaken.
We’ve been doing that for years… Do a race with the AI. It does it almost every time to me, I’m not joking every single trial. It will come across the track pull in front of me and hit the brakes. Last trial I’m driving along on a downhill turn. Come violently across the track pulls right in front and brakes. Leaves me nowhere to go and wrecks me into real players as I fly off the hillside it’s ridiculous.
