Rear View Mirror 6-16-14

Howdy Race Fans,

This week RVM is focused on the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans. Get your race coverage here and post your thoughts on the race.

I’m also looking for your own personal story of how the 2.4 Hours of Le Mans hopper treated you. I will give a credit gift to the best post about your 2.4 hour race experience.

See you in the thread and later this week in Heavy Metal Affliction where we will cover another Forza community member who is living their dreams racing in the real world.

John

I entered the 2.4 Hours of Le Mans twice. Sadly it was because I got kicked to dash around an hour into my first attempt.

That race I was in the Corvette and was pleasantly surprised at how clean the lobby was racing.

Second attempt I was allocated P class and decided not to muck around so jumped in my 787B.

I had a few arguments with the rails early on and wondered if damage really was on simulation. I pitted for tyres and fuel around the hour mark and then on the very next lap I found out for sure that damage was most definitely on. I had an argument with the magic baguettes (the speed bumps just inside the apex of some turns). My car flipped and damaged just about every part that could be damaged.

Thankfully I was less than a mile from the pits so limped there for some repairs.

The rest of the race was quite tame but once again I was pleasantly surprised with the clean racing.

Looking forward to another 2.4 hours at the wheel (controller) this weekend.

This happened to me, I had fuel and tire damage the whole race but sim damage was not there for me till I hit the pits the first time. And sure enough the lap after i pitted had someone almost total my car.

I also entered the 2.4 Hours of Le Mans. Unfortunately I’m still fresh to the Forza scene and didn’t fair all that well I was using one of my starter cars the Subaru BRZ. I’m greatly trying to improve my skills with all assists turned off and simulation turned on so I came in dead last to be honest. I stuck through tho even if I came in last place lol 2.4 hours of fun/bliss even is I did consistently peel out.
Gonna try again this weekend for SURE!!!
Good story SatNiteEduardo BTW look forward to seeing you online

I’m so amazed that Audi is still king of Le Mans even with Toyota’s TS040 pole position and Porsche’s return to Le Mans via the 919 Hybrid. I have to say that Porsche’s return to Le Mans is quite a brave act indeed despite problems. Man, can’t recover myself after the game… (laughing)

Anyway, last week, from where I’m come from, I went to the CenturyLink Field Event Center to attend the first ever Mecum Car Auctions event held in Seattle. This is the first time they’ve ever had such a wondrous car auction event held in Seattle.

My pics: https://www.flickr.com/photos/leopauldelr/sets/72157645166353874/

My short video tour: http://youtu.be/OS3jD7r4ox8

And you got to love this one; at the Mecum Auctions Seattle, the 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Convertible was sold at 3.5 million dollars! Here’s the description of the highest auctioned car in that event:

  • Fully restored example of what is arguably the most sought after factory muscle car in the world
  • 1 of 2 four-speed examples delivered in the US
  • Retains mostly all of its original sheet metal
  • Retains its original drivetrain
  • Documented with the broadcast sheet
  • Original Hemi 426/425 HP V-8
  • Original 4-speed transmission
  • Two 4-barrel carburetors
  • Hurst Pistol Grip shifter
  • Power brakes
  • Blue with Blue interior and Black top
  • Bucket seats
  • Goodyear polyglas tires
  • 1 of 11 Hemi Cuda Convertibles produced in 1971

Man, some of you have missed that event but that’s okay though. I had fun.

I unfortunately did not take part in the 2.4 hr race challenge due to bad weather here in SW Florida, and I thought the power might go out as I’m racing in the hopper (which it did occasionally), but I’m gonna try to get into the one next weekend.

@leopauldelr - I’m jealous that you got to attend that auction, it’s been a long time since I’ve been to one of those car events

I watched about 20hours of the 24hours, the first 3 hours was good!! the rain at LeMans always brings fun it was sad to see the number 3 Audi get the worst of the crash, was going slow because of the rain then BOOM!! Toyota & Farrari hits it kills it. the Audi team are a very well oiled team the things they can do and i am sure DR Wolfgang Ullrich is some kind of Wizard i think. it was a unlucky turn for Porsche but they did well for there first year back from 1998 and Toyota took a bad fall going from far out first to retirement but thats LeMans!!

i did the 2.4 hour race while watching the race on my phone as it was sat in front of me,

i was in the Aston Martin GT fresh paint, fresh tune, to start off it was good till the first corner then we found out i was in “one of them lobbys” first conrner bumped off and not from behind from the side(turned away from the corner to hit me) no damage lucky!! that put me to 5/5 i quickly came back and after about 30min got in to 3rd. i did not pit till the 1h20m tires 70% fuel almost gone this made to 2nd, was slowly catching 1st he was on the map, he pitted i did not went past him in to 1st, YES!! … so this where it starts! about 30min left. some one in the 787B took it on him self to drive past me get in front on the strait slam his brakes on SLAM!! car is now dead, limped back to the pits stayed in 2nd back out going well 2nd will do. nope the same guy was recked after strait going in to the woods strait go to pass him, turns in front of me SLAM!! go is now dead again limped back to the pit he is behind me puts me to 3rd, go out from the pits he starts ramming me, i do a lucky avoid hit misses hit wall am away finish in 3rd

but was fun for the first 2hours maybe the nurburgring will go better

I had a pretty good experience in the L’Endurance lobby I was in. We started with 11 and ended with 8. I was in the R class Corvette. I ended up running 342 miles in the 'Vette and won the race, having taken the lead on lap 1 and never relinquishing it. I ended up lapping the field at least twice. But my experience with traffic was very positive. All the P class cars were quite respectful of me and passed cleanly, even waiting out a corner or two that I was taking slower and getting me on the straights. The same goes for lapped traffic in R class. They all let me by cleanly. I pitted twice for tires. The first came as a shock as I didn’t even realize that damage was on! I hope that I can find a little fuller lobby this weekend for the 'Ring, as it got pretty quiet out there with just 8 cars on the track. But I certainly learned more about how to drive Le Mans this weekend!

My experience of the 2.4 Hour hopper was that I didn’t get to participate. 100+ attempts to join a lobby but every single one was +1 hour wait time. Because of this I have no highlights on which car I used or epic moments during the race. My highlight was sitting in my racing rig joining and backing out of lobbies for a good portion of my weekend. So glad I got to enjoy myself on my two days off. Thanks for the great experience Turn 10.

If the 2.4 Hour Nurburgring hopper is set up the same way, I will look forward to NOT participating. I’ll have better things to do.

What do you do on a lazy weekend? Right!

Get all your TVs in one room and prepare for 24h racing in Le Mans, World Cup in Brasil and Forza 2 on X360 as i’m currently working on 100% achievements over all Forza titles

As Alex Wurz, two times champion, driver in the pole Toyota Hybrid and Austrian like me, participated in the run for his third title, all my sympathies were with the Toyota #8 . My secret personal highlight was the comeback of Porsche after 16 years of absence with an own factory team ready to break the dominance of the R18 e-trons. Unfortunately Alex didn’t get his hands on the cup for a third time, although they were in the lead after more than the half of the race, but it seems that next year there will be serious competitors challenging the Audis.

All in all the race delivered what I expected and the verified formula that only the most reliable car can win was approved: Mark Webber in the Porsche 919 and perhaps the best driver retired close to the finishing line. Sorry for that and better luck next time.

The most funny incident was in my opinion the door problems of the Rebellion Team with teir R-One. The car with Dominik Kraihamer, Andrea Belicchi and Fabio Leimer opened during the race, so the had to hold it until change of drivers. As they came to the box, the door didn’t open and they had to replace the door to find out that it still didn’t work and opened back on the track. The most hilarious thing is that they are working on this problem for over one year. They improved the car, the engine but the door seems to be a unsolvable problem. I’m looking forward to see you next year again, hopefully with a solution for this problem

Le Mans? Why not the more eco-friendly tour de France? Joking. Le Mans is a quite cool race, now I can play on it on the move with real racing 3. But when at home I love to play it on my Xbox!

Hi John,

after only 30 minutes waiting in the lobby, i had the luck of choosing the Toyota GT1 in the LMP Class.
We were 12 cars in the lobby and in the first corner a car crashed in my back.
Ok i think it’s an endurance race and with a heavily damaged car i drove one lap to the pits and being now on the last position i start my race.
Becoming a feeling for the car it was great fun to race and i must say the other drivers are all fair and let me pass when i was faster.
At the end ,after 2 pitstops and one break for the toilette, i could finish first .I am not the fastest driver ,but i had constant lap times and this is the advantage of an endurance race.
Altogether this was one of the greatest experiences of my gaming career (thanks to a fair lobby).
I hope i have the same luck on the ring next weekend.

Hi, John.
I had a personal interest in the LeMans 24 hr race as a friend of mine was running a Team car No 41 In LMP 2.
Unfortunately it did not finish but was great watching it’s progress through out the time it was running.
Also another great race shame about Porsche though really wanted them to win.

I really couldn’t care less about the feature race of Le Mans. For me it was all about the group c cars. Shame they only had 10 laps, but at least they were real cars and not Prius’s on steroids… The Sauber Mercedes was lapping so much faster than the others it was like they were the wrong class! Nice that the Jaguar performed well too though. More please!

I spent the whole of last week preparing for Le Mans 2.4hrs, in my Audi R18, perfecting my setup, only to find out when I tried to join a lobby that I would have to do it in a GT Race car!
Initially, I was pretty unhappy with it. Especially since it was a multi class race and some people were in the Audi…
But I picked my car carefully, had time to try a setup and then hit the lobby again.
The car I picked was the Corvette GT1 as it was fast enough when the Aston wasn’t, and stable under braking when the Ferrari 458 wasn’t.
I then grabbed myself a sweet Spawn Livery, courtesy of FRS Elmutem, who does amazing work, and settled in for a 17min wait before the last race finished.

Starting the Race, there were 3 Corvette’s in the GT class and 2 Ferrari 333P’s in the LPM1 class. I started on pole.

As we moved off the line and headed into the first corner, I noticed I car coming up behind me. Trying to be a gentleman racer, and thinking it was an LMP1 car, I pulled over to leave him enough room. It wasn’t. And it meant that I was in 2nd place before we even braked into the first turn. Not happy.

I kept up with him, through the first part of the lap, and quickly noticed that I was a lot better on the brakes, and through the turns, than the car in front.
I always tend to run slightly higher downforce/less top speed to give me extra speed through the twisty stuff.

As we approached the Porsche Curves, I was right on his tail. I knew he wouldn’t be able to live with my speed through this section.
I turned into the double left hander, fast, and hit a massive bump, sending a thud through the controller, and lost the back end over the grass.
I managed to save it, and not hit the wall, but I had lost a lot of time and watched as first place stretched out his lead.

And this was just the first lap!

As we braked into the first turn for the second time, I had made up some of the gap. A couple of clean turns through the next section and a beautiful exit onto the Mulsanne straight put me within drafting distance of the car in front.

First chicane. Brake, Down 4 Gears. Turn. A little squirt of power, then brake again, turn and I’m through.
I’m right alongside now. It a clear drag race to the next chicane. Thundering down the straight, the two V8’s just meters from each other, as we approach the braking zone at nearly 200mph.

Second chicane. I brake, trying to keep to the right as possible, leaving the other car plenty of room as we plow into the first curve. He is on the inside and I’m slightly ahead on the outside. As the next part of the chicane comes into play, I turn, and hold on, trying to keep my exit clean, trying to leave the other guy enough room. As we pass the apex, I take the lead.

And I never gave it back.

On lap 3, he just disappeared from the map and my mirrors. I passed him a lap later, with a lot of smoke coming out of his bonnet. He obviously had a massive accident. He pitted and got it fixed, but by then I was 2 laps ahead. He did catch me up and pass me, once, but I was still first so it didn’t make a difference.

330 miles later, and victory was mine. Very happy, though it was 4am over here by then!

I was SO happy to hear that Schumacher was out of his coma! I know his doctors are saying it’s still a long road to recovery, but with so little happening the last 6 months, I wasn’t sure he would even wake up! Well wishes and prayers sent his way from me.

I was also pretty bummed to hear how Senna’s race turned out! Shame to have the race decided by a mechanical failure, but as you said - reliability was proven to be the key to success!
