Question rally vs race suspention for offroad in a heavy car

so generally the extra height from the rally suspension is what i want but i wonder when setting up the suspension for cars (found a spreadsheet that seems to spit out usefull settings) i’ve noticed that for most of my rally cars, especially the heavier one’s (celica’s as 55% of the mass is up front) that the recommended carry weight for the springs up front is 10-20kg’s a spring higher then i can set it up front would it in this case be better to switch to race suspension and just set the height to max?

tried googling but doesn’t seem like anybody’s asked this question

I’ve used the rally suspension on cars that drive very good on asphalt but struggle offroad. It’s been my experience that the rally and race suspensions can both be good for on or off road - race allows lower ride height and tighter springs while rally provides higher ride height and looser springs. Depending on the car and how you drive (or at least how your preferences of how a car reacts to your inputs) they might both do what you want, or you might be stuck with one and have to deal with lower ride height or softer springs.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with unorthodox parts. Things don’t always make sense in this game and there are always exceptions to rules that people come up with. If it works, just go with it.

Just put rally springs and stiffen them up a bit.

I don’t rely on those “template” tunes, especially if they are suggesting springs that stiff.

If I use max ride height on rally springs I use min spring rate.

If I use something close to minimum ride height I am well into the bottom half of the spring rate slider as well.

I very rarely venture into the 50% plus range on the spring rate slider.

i’m sure the template’s are by no means perfect but they’re atleast based on weight/weight distribution which results in settings that often clash hard with the default for forza but frequently does make the car “better” beeing able to go through corners faster and cornering more easely wile at high speeds. as far as street tune’s are concerned the template’s been good for me but offroad my cars don’t seem horribly gimped compared to other cars (i’m frequently running less power then the oposition (as noticed at the start / straits) but my fatass celica’s seem to give them a run for there money most of the time (~1100kg for S class, ~1300 for A/B class) with the later being part of the issue, recommended spring…carry capacity? cant find the word atm but 126 and rally springs max out at 115, for my heavier road cars 115kg isn’t even that much my RWD 2017 NSX S class (1297kg) is at 114kg up front 143kg rear for example but then again it’s not made for offroad.

i’m also using max ride height since i’m generally using them more for cross country then mixed surface and suv’s/pickups seem to lead there with me frequently in 2nd or 3rd so somethings working :stuck_out_tongue: just wondering if getting suspention that can handel the fatness of the car might make the difference to fighting for 1st :stuck_out_tongue:

My suspicion is the template does not work with rally springs and by the sounds of it is trying to be scientific rather than good in this game.

Like I said if I use rally springs at max height I use minimum spring rate.

My view if you want to fight for first you need to tune for turning ability (no I do not mean unstable, I mean correctly tuning a car so that it can turn at speed). Anti roll bars are you friend, well at the back end that is. One of my cars is running 6/60.

I have gone 1/60 in some extreme cases of cars that don’t want to turn.

But I have been playing around with rally springs lately and I have been using soft springs and bump with stiff rebound. And I hate max height. Since I started lowering the ride height I have been having lots of fun on dirt and cross country. For me all max ride height does is make the car/truck very bouncy, harder to control and more likely to rolling over.

And rally springs do matter. I have a D class '40 Ford that is a beast. Easily my best D class pavement car. So I bought another one and put the exact same build except swapping race for rally springs and it is a beast off road. The street one good on dirt but not as good as the rally one and on cross country there is no comparison.

I don’t use max ride height much.

If I don’t I use 1 or 2 clicks from minimum and I stay in the bottom half of spring rates.

Not sure why the OPs template is suggesting something as high as it does.
