Please, please tell me Forza, and Microsoft for that matter, have something cooking regarding VR.

Because Project Cars just announced its supporting Morpheus… http://www.gamespot.com/articles/one-of-the-first-vr-games-coming-to-ps4-s-project-morpheus-will-be-a-racer/1100-6418558/

…This also kind of alludes to how fast Sony intends to bring this to market. With Occulus being gobbled by FB yesterday, it seems the gaming world is about to go through a profound evolution. Don’t know about you guys, but I thought Occulus was going to meander slowly over the next three years, eventually becoming a pretty cool product. VR, I figured was more on the 5+ year plan. Apparently not! This is actually really exciting. I would love to sit down with Forza and actually be in the car, see the track rushing towards you with the ability to look around, even over your shoulder before passing, and of course across the car towards the next corner(I realize forza has head tracking, but it doesn’t work at all when your sitting in a big lazy boy)… the road screaming at you in 3d… Yup…sign me up for that…pair it with a wheel/cockpit and we’re pretty much nearing nirvana…
…heck, with Kinect tracking us, maybe they could have the digital avatars mimic what your doing in RL. You could actually wave someone ahead of you…

Anyway, the potential for a driving game looks huge, and it would be great to hear that t10 are thinking of it… just a crumb please!

I really hope they aren’t. Seriously hope they aren’t. Especially with facebook dipping it’s hands into ownership of Occulus Rift. Kinect is one thing, but VR? No. Do not want.

Ever. I really hope this VR thing comes and goes swiftly, never to be heard from again.

Given how fast this post got graveyard, I think you’ll get your wish. I think the tech’s coming though…as for Kinect…meh, its a total fail at my house. It works about 50% of the time, except with forza where it doesn’t work at all…at all. We’ll see how it does after the april patch, I think Kinect sport rivals will attempt to resurrect it. Anyway, it seems as if VR and 8k Tv’s are happening very soon which is exciting, yet a bit troubling given the hardware of the xbox one.

Looks like a fad to me…lol

Every time I see it, I can’t help but think of how much of a (unfit for forums) it makes you look!!! I mean honestly!

Pfft, its going to change the world as we know it.

They said that about the Nintendo Virtualboy too… look where that went. xD

That picture is 20 years old so I agree with Dragnets statement of

I agree with Dragnet and Worm. It’ll pass. Honestly, watching the Sony GDC event on Morpheus, it really just looks like a glorified way of head tracking to me.

lol, the same thing was also said about the internet, TV, electricity and the Macarena.

If this were a few years ago, I’d be agreeing with you guys about the whole fad thing. I don’t think this is though.

If Sony’s engineers fix on this, they have the tech to make this happen. Over the past year or so, they have made impressive strides in sensor and evf tech. Form factors have been dramatically been reduces, while quality has soared. I speak generally here, nothings perfect and photographers can nitpick the screens a bit, but for the most part the improvements were honestly jaw dropping. While it isn’t true in all conditions, there are moments where I forget I’m looking at an EVF(Electronic View Finder), when I’m shooting with the Sony a7r. Don’t get me wrong, its not perfect, but given the size of the camera, its still quite impressive. Not to mention, if you had told me last year at this time that I’d be fooled, even briefly by and EVF, I’d would have laughed. So, the tech is pretty much there. If they can do high rez, quick refresh rate in 3d, with a front facing camera to assimilate your surroundings to VR experience, it will change everything…quick. Done well, gaming will improve incredibly.

Think about it. Lets say we have a wheel/stick/playseat type setup. With VR, the wheel will look like the car your driving, You won’t need an overlay for rpm’s or speed because you’ll simply look at the dash. Depth perception as well as an awareness of where you are in relation to other drivers will dramatically improve because instead of hitting a button, your mirrors are set, just like a proper car. Oh yeah, that bumper which just broke off, its coming right at you. Speaking of which, and this will probably be the driving force in gaming, think of a FPS. Imagine Titanfall in VR3d…

One more thing, and to be honest, we all know this is probably the most important…from betamax/vhs to blue ray and the internet in general, the cash from porn has determined the direction of technology… Think about it, where 3d porn obviously wasn’t going to work, VR will…and at a fraction of the cost of a decent TV.

To be honest, I’m stunned too, and I’d like to clarity that I mentioned Sony not because of PS4, but rather their sensor/imaging tech right now being so impressive. The more I think about this, the more it seems as if its actually going to be viable this time. And frankly, thats pretty exciting. This could be a tremendous evolution in the way we interact from this point forward and now with FB’s power move it appears as if its going to be much sooner, than later.

bottom line for me however, you’ll never see me with it, because I can hardly stand using headsets, something on the front of my face like that wouldn’t work well for me at all. I have sleep Apnea, and I just have to suffer because I freak out trying to use that cpap machine. Forget trying to use VR having that issue. I can see a bunch of people having issues with a screen that close to their face for an extended amount of time as well.

I seriously doubt this will stick, and be just as stated before, a fad. As it has many times in tech history.

Im sorry for your condition, but to speak in a more general sense. It’s surprising just how ok that viewfinder is. To make the point, I only shoot manual focus with my sony a7r, to do that with an EVF with an acceptable accuracy rate has blown me away. Not to mention its so small.

Honestly VR sucks hard! I remember when I got my Kinect for the 360. I couldn’t even play Kinect adventure. My room was too small and I had to stand on the couch and crouch down awkwardly just to be seen by the camera. That and the Virtual Boy.

hah…lol…well Kintect still pretty much stinks! Hoping Microsoft improves that a bit with their April update. That said, citing things like the virtual box is an example of trying to make a product before the tech is ready. I mean, heh, I had to go look it up, and that things horrid… Anyway, as I said above, Sony has dropped a few(largely unexpected) game changers this year, in sensor and evf tech. Like huge jumps, not small bounds…so its a brave new world out there.

Really wish Microsoft would post something regarding VR. Starting to get the feeling that Sony knows they have them on the ropes and are pushing…

I don’t know, this looks like it would be a touch better than Nintendos Virtua boy Onboard Driver Eye 2.0 - Assetto Corsa Lotus 49 (Test1) - YouTube.
