I was so beyond disappointed yesterday when I noticed they’d brought back an awful feature from Forza 4. When you upgrade to a race transmission you get the whining noise of a straight cut racing gearbox. Now, while this is a great feature on paper, it’s so annoying when in game for me. I know it’s realistic, but if you don’t want the noise but have a nicely upgraded street car you have to gamble on the sport transmission having decently spaced ratios (for example the ratios in the 92 falcon are awfully spaced and ruin the driving experience, therefore I had to put up with the awful whine) If you’re going to add this feature back in, at least let us tune the sport transmission. It’s possible in real life to do this without having a full blown racing gearbox, so why not here? So disappointing
Wow… complaining just for the sake of complaining, are we?
Just kidding! don’t upgrade your transmission then or get a Street transmission which gives you better top speed in some cases. Otherwise, just do an engine swap and forced induction mod if you want more acceleration and speed.
People are raising concerns over lack of realism and authenticity in car sounds and you actually want something removed that happens IRL when you drive with a modded trans? Just… wow…
No, that noise doesn’t occur in real life when you change gear ratios. I literally said it’s good and realistic that the noise occurs, I just want to be able to tune gear ratios without installing the race transmition with that noise. You really don’t appear to have understood what I meant. And no amount of engine swaps or induction adding changes the gear ratios, you obviously know a lot about cars. I don’t care about top speed I literally just care about the gear spacing
What is your gripe exactly? Are you saying that a semi-adjustable transmission (known as a Sport transmission in Forza) whines or doesn’t whine IRL? Please enlighten me. I actually came across many paddle shifting cars that had a stock trans yet had the whine, particularly louder in 2nd gear for some reason.
The issue is that the fully adjustable sport transmission would jump up in PI to same what racing transmission has, and at the very same time making the race transmission worthless upgrade.
We could say that you want sport transmission removed from the game, but if you dont like it you dont need to use it.
And as you noted thet the 92 Falcon has terrible gearing I natrually had to try it, And I’d say the gearing might not be the best possible, it’s pretty good to begin with, How ever you might have skew’d the stock gearing with camshafts
I don’t think it would. Of course I don’t know how exactly PI is calculated, but if you install a different gearbox, then only top speed or acceleration can change (I know that some gearboxes are not as heavy as others and therefore a few kilograms would change handling and breaking too but that’s just a very small difference). The racing gearbox has a standard setting and that determines how much better / worse top speed and acceleration will be. All of the tuning that is done by the user does not have an effect on PI.
So here’s the point: I think that the PI difference of gearboxes doesn’t depend on the ability to adjust the gears but it depends on things like initial gearbox setup, shifting time and to a little extent on weight.
And I was happy that this awesome feature is now back after 5 and 6 not having it. But I understand what you’re trying to say. I know that some cars have an awful stock gear spacing so you just can hope that some kind of solution is added (without disabling the sound completely).
I assume that you’re using the cockpit view because it’s the only one where this sound is (noticeably) present. Maybe if there isn’t an update you can find another view you feel comfortable with?
But if you have fully adjutable “sport” gearbox why would you ever need “race” gearbox? Specially if you could save 1-20PI with not using the race gearbox, as you currently can.
I mean thet there MUST be some good reason to choose the racing gearbox, and currently the only good reason is full adjustability of that gearbox. and the limitig factor of other gearboxes.
The OP’s issue is that racing gearbox (in game) has the noise of straight cut gearbox, and he doesnt like it. but as he claims that the car he uses needs it due stock gearing (which is on sport gearbox) is terrible. So therefore he wants sport transmission which works exactly like racing gearbox, but doesnt have the sound.
This is my precise thoughts on it. I’m glad the noise is there for a racing gearbox as it’s realistic and adds to the experience. However, it would be nice to have an alternative that could also be tuned. My original post was more of an angry initial reaction than a concise review, so I wouldn’t say it’s game ruining. Overall, I’m really enjoying the game, especially the homoligation feature which some complained about, however this transmission thing is one of a few gripes that turn 10 should have given more thought.
The PI increases come from the weight savings and faster shift times, not the adjustibility.
It would be great if having adjustable gears was separate from the performance increases because then I wouldnt have waste PI points on something I didnt want.
Anybody else noticing trans whine on stock transmissions? Could be the whine some engines exhibit as you get closer to redlining… but I don’t know. Seems peculiar.
I would say there could be some limited adjustability to the Sports gearbox other than the final ratio. Maybe just that you could only change the gears a few points either way from stock. I think that would be the best of both worlds and of course be limited to the stock/5 gears whichever is more. I do agree the whine of the racing gearbox can be a little irritating on the helmet cam view but I appreciate it as it’s realistic. Before anyone hates me I do fully understand why its only the final drive that can be adjusted on the sports box and I do like it that way. It does make tuning simpler on lower end cars when you don’t need to put in a racing box.
They did announce before the game was released that there would be transmission whine added back in. They were very proud of that fact. So you will hear it even in stock Transmissions a bit especially when you’re doing cockpit or the other interior view.
That said I am completely against the idea of the sport transmission having tunable gears. I think that needs to be reserved for the race transmission. It needs to be a major choice in your upgrading factor. I know it is for me. I have to decide if I want that ability or I want some other features to stay within my PI cap.
Also if you go from a stock transmission to a sport to a race you will notice that the jump in points is incrementally pretty similar. This has nothing to do with the stock setup of the gears or adjustability factor. It has entirely to do with the weight savings which generally is very minor, and more has to do with the fact that it lowers your shift time. If you have adjustable gears in the stock transmission the only advantage the race transmission would give you is slightly faster shifting. That would make it basically a non-upgrade everyone. I’m not going to give up 2-3 points in PI when I’m so close just to gain .02 or .03 faster shifting. That’s going to be much better spent on some bigger tires for grip or many others places like a front wing etc.
^^Quite insightful. Slightly confused though - why would a car that has a stock trans with no adjustable gear ratios exhibit any whining? A sport trans might, and full race transmission will whine for sure and I love it. I enjoyed this feature a lot in FM4 but distinctly remember there was no gear whine effect at all in cars with stock transmissions.
Please leave it as it is. I love the gearbox whine on race transmissions. Allowing finetuning on sports gearboxes would just increase the gap between manual and manual with clutch. So just leave it as it is.
I completely agree. You can change ratios in any transmission, stock or aftermarket, and it really is disappointing to not be able to adjust any of that unless you have top tier.
