What kind of liveries do you like to do yourself, or what kind do you buy/collect?
I pay close attention to the liveries on actual race cars, but I very seldom recreate the paintjobs of actual cars when I’m in the paint shop. I don’t describe my style as “fantasy” because many would interpret that to mean the sort of vinyl wraps you see on drift cars etc. in Forza. I definitely respect the skill and the amount of work involved in creating a detailed anime figure, or the movie-poster look, or some Goth fantasy. It just isn’t the kind of thing I would want on a car I am driving, either in the real world or in a racing game.
My “thing” is a GT car or dragster that looks like it could be a real-world car (at least to my eye it looks that way). The twist I put on it, and the way I exercise my creative muse, is in the fact that I make up driver names, sponsor names, manufacturer logos, etc. I love puns, so you’ll see plenty of those on my cars. I worked in the graphic design field, once upon a time, so logo ideas come to me and I have spent hundreds of hours in the paint shop creating cool-looking or humorous manufacturer decals.
Here’s one key to my love of FM3, and my opinion that It’s the peak of the franchise: the paintshop in Three has all the capabilities of Four and follow-on versions, and one big advantage. There are fewer cars where part of the texture map has either glitches or areas where you can’t paint. It always used to bug me in FM4 when the default livery has a prominent windshield banner, and then you start to paint it yourself only to find you can’t put anything there.
