Paint/Rims - Paint Finishes Don't Apply Properly on Many Rims [List, Update 6.0]

Vote on this topic if you have encountered this issue! (Don’t forget to do so on other topics in the Troubleshooting Hub as well)

Platform: Xbox Series X
Graphics Mode: Performance
FM23 Version: 1.553.0255.0 (Update 6.0)

This topic is a truncated version of a previously closed topic found here. As of Update 5.0 the information found there still applies. I hope this one will be easier to use for the developers/bug fixers/product team.

[Update 6.0 Notes] In update 5.0 there were some rims that didn’t respond to color at all (whether they’re painted red, green, blue, yellow, etc. the rim would instead appear gray), but in update 6.0 I didn’t find any rims that didn’t respond to color. Many of those rims still fail in some other way, however.

Bug Information

There are 308 aftermarket rims in Forza Motorsport (2023), all of which can be painted. However, on the majority of rims, the paint finish displays incorrectly on the rim. Painting a rim in a matte finish would instead result in a glossy or chrome finish instead, and in some cases the color won’t show at all.

The following pictures are comparisons between Forza Motorsport 2023 (these are from update 5.0, images will be updated to 6.0 counterparts soon) and Forza Motorsport 7. The lighting isn’t exactly the same between the two games, but just note the differences in how the paint is applied.
(In both games, the whole rim is painted with the following settings: Hue: 0.60, Saturation: 1.00, Brightness: 1.00, matte finish)

Out of the 308 aftermarket rims in Forza Motorsport (2023), 197 of them (64%) cannot be painted properly in a matte finish (compared to 201 in update 5.0). In Forza Motorsport 7 I could count only 3 or 4.

Information Regarding the Table

Being there are hundreds of rims affected by the issue, it is not practical to write a lengthy description of how each particular rim is affected by the issue. Not many people have the time to read a dense wall of text for an hour or two. Furthermore, it is not practical to create a troubleshooting topic for each rim. As of right now there are 860 topics in the Forza Motorsport “Report New Issues” section; it does not need to be increased by 23.3% on faulty painting issues alone.

Instead the information presented here is condensed into a table format. Every aftermarket rim is listed, and with each rim there is either a P or an F marked next to it.

  • P stands for PASS. The rim appears roughly like it should when painted matte, with the same settings used in the image examples earlier (H: 0.60, S: 1.00, B: 1.00).
  • F stands for FAIL. The rim can be failed for any number of different reasons, such as appearing glossy, semi-glossy, metallic, chrome, or the color displayed deviates significantly from the color chosen (appearing too dark for example). Any single part of the rim not appearing matte can fail a rim. (These are the rims that need to be fixed)

For the sake of simplicity, each rim is only marked Pass or Fail. If more information is required, please ask for clarification in the comments section.

Voted! Amazing job !

As of today, 12-4-2023, numerous rims do not show painted colors properly. The photos attached, as examples, show two wheels that are next to each other in wheel selection. The rim paint should be solid in color as shown on the solid yellow example. The second wheel shows the color incorrectly as a chrome or metallic finish. This occurs on any car.

I have still (today is the 16. of November, and I had updatet the game) wrong colours on some wheels. For example, here the Work rims, the colours should be polished metal. And it seems every colour is converted in flat paint (grey in first picture should be polished aluminium) or simple matte black (second picture, inner part should be gold)

I have made a post about this issue

I want to quickly add to this issue that painted or stock rims look fully shiny and brand new even on the inside which is plain weird. There’s no shadow on them or the fact that they should be dirtier and less shinny from the inside at least. The inside of the rims also look like they are getting bathed in sunlight!

No matter whether it’s aluminum semi-gloss or brushed, the wheels look absolutely terrible in this game. I really respect your work on the rims/material issues @Godhydra.

I sincerely hope Update 7 is the one that focuses on the visuals of this game. Materials, paints, shaders, reflections and all!

This is one of the most annoying bugs. I’ll be glad if it ever gets fixed.

Fixing this material rendering issue, the “grey” windshield and side glass frames issue, global illumination and paint color, saturation, depth and behaviour - will be a big visual improvement.

The game right now still has that “Real Racing 3” flat, mobile-game look

The lighting is so bad. It makes the game look like a mobile game…

Identical issues to the one you presented here affects the same wheels when Normal Colours are applied, they also appear as Metallic. If you have a Normal Colour that’s been modified to appear as two-tone (eg. yellow + pink), it is going to work as such on the same wheels that appear as not Matte when Matte paint is applied.

Yeah pretty sure I’ve seen these visuals on a Nokia N-Gage from the 2000s

Voted & shared to the livery creators on X. Great work.

We appreciate you opening this topic and sharing feedback. For us to be able to more effectively address your concerns, we ask that you open up threads for single specific issues, and try to avoid “grouping” several issues into one. This way, we’ll be able to better understand and convey a particular issue to our product team, and open and track bugs internally to monitor progress towards resolution. As a result, we will close this thread, but please open individual topics on issues you notice with the game. Thank you!
In the case of car reports please try to report one issue per car in your thread.

@Godhydra
Hi Godhydra,

Firstly thank you for taking the time to test the massive number of customizable car rims in Forza Motorsport and creating this extensive report on the list of wheels with appearance issues in the game. We do not underestimate the colossal effort this would’ve taken you and we greatly appreciate it!

We closed your threads as part of a wider clean-up of troubleshooting topics on the forums. We regularly do this so we can compile all the necessary information to share with the game development team in a digestible format so they can immediately understand the most pressing issues for our players and begin reproducing these bugs internally.

Unfortunately, the response previously shared wasn’t clear in why we closed the thread, so we wanted to revisit this topic to provide that additional context.

In the meantime, the team has reviewed your report and is currently investigating whether the issue is being caused by a singular bug affecting all paintable rims, or rather if these are all separate, individual issues. If and when a fix has been developed and thoroughly tested, which could take us some time considering the number of wheels this issue is impacting, we will provide another update to this thread, and from there let you know when the fix is available in the game through our Forza.net blog posts and release notes.

Thank you again for your detailed notes and dedication to Forza Motorsport!

Best Regards,
Forza Support Team
