I brought this up on another thread about dirty racing tactics being rewarded but I felt I needed to ask this directly in hopes of getting an answer.
I was actually wondering if there were time penalties being assessed in the online lobbies. I don’t deliberately cut the track by any means, but i do make a mistake from time to time either by cooking a turn or turning in a little to early.
Time penalties were assessed back in the days of Forza 1 if you went off the track. The end of online race results were calculated with these penalties and would influence the outcome. T10 has not done that with any title since.
That said. There have been several times when I was online where I beat someone by less than a second only to find out that I actually lost by a second or two. The other day i had beaten 4th place by more than 2 car lengths and the end of race results said I actually finished behind him in 4th at a time of +2 seconds. My only conclusion for the number of times this has happened would be that there was a time penalty assessed for a mistake I made where I had gone off the track for more time than I finished ahead of the next racer.
It would be nice to know if this is actually what is happening. I would be totally fine if I lost one spot due to a time penalty assessed for a mistake rather than losing a race because someone is deliberately cutting the track.
I did a search of the forums and was unable to find an answer or a similar post so please forgive me if this topic already has an open thread.

It depends on lobby rules. Hoppers I’m not sure. But in private lobbies you can have the winner as best lap time rather than 1st place (clean trumps dirty)
I am referring to the hoppers. This has happened a couple times. I am also pretty sure it wasn’t due to lag. The last time this happened, the guy that placed 1 spot higher than me even though I was definitely in front of him, was racing as though I was battleing him for the spot for half the lap prior to the finish. We were both definitely giving one another room to opperate when going side by side through turns.
If it’s in the public hoppers then in my experience it can be down to lag somewhere in the lobby - either your connection or theirs. Either way I’ve seen it very occasionally on older Forza titles and as we have a lot of the same issues with online hoppers in this game then that is your most likely answer.
its a lag thing, you lag and you loose x time, then at the end of the race you get your time x back, via the total times/ placings.
I had this happen nearly exactly as described but I was the benefactor. I don’t think you were in my lobby though.
My situation:
Racing on the old Indy GP circuit, I pull on the front straight at the end of the second lap to take the proverbial white flag. I had a rather large lead in this race and felt I had it in the bag barring a stupid mistake on the last lap. Before reaching the start finish line my screen stopped moving, like the frame rate dropped to zero, froze. Expecting the screen to start moving again and find my car down the front straight some large distance I kept holding the gas trigger and was thankful I was on a straight in a ghost lobby to not hit anything while I couldn’t see what was happening.
What happened instead was that my screen resumed from the point it froze and I found myself in 5th place. You can imagine my frustration since I felt I had the win in hand. I drove the last lap trying to regain as many positions as possible and crossed the line neck and neck with third, missing out on 3rd place to finish 4th. But then, it showed me as having won. And I was happy again.
I’m not sure how this happens, if the time wasn’t elapsing for me while my screen was froze? Then because my time wasn’t elapsing when I cross the finish my race time was the least time so I was awarded the win? Really not sure what is behind how that works out but it was certainly the result of my screen freeze.
