Adrenaline maybe?
There is less grip on line then in test drive, career mode, or rivals mode. I race with a like minded group in private lobbies. We have noticed this and have discussed it among our selves. when I tune on test drive I shoot for the car to be a little pushy. This usually has the effect of make the car just a little loose during online play. I don’t like glitched cars so I don’t build them. If I can get my non giltched car in the top 500 on the leaderboard I’ll call it good. The forza 6 tuning app works fairly well and usually creates a slightly pushy tune which will be close for online lobbies. Take notes after your online race and make adjustments then try it again. Some tracks have less grip then others. You need to know each tracks grip level if you really want to break into the top 200. I suggest you view Stella Stigs tuning guides on YouTube or find a copy of the forza 2 official game guide which have excellent guides on how to tune. I would really love to know how much grip discount there really is so if anyone knows please let me know.
See you on the track.

There grip level is generally same online and off. And all the glitch car have been removed and patched.
I noticed the online grip is less also…and another thing, when a friend sends me an invite to race with them my grip is definitely less then when I play by myself online.
I’m going to have to agree with everyone that said it’s not the car/tune it’s you. Your mindset is different when you are racing actual people. I notice I drive differently even when doing rivals and chasing a ghost. I push harder when being pushed.
Be easy enough to test with a private lobby alone then. If something is wonky with the physics it would likely show up in tire temps. An oval would probably make it easier to rule out driving style as well.
The cars absolutely handle differently online. Why? Because you drive them differently. There is no “rewind” in online racing. You cannot take a "hot lap " line in traffic. As others have said, you tend to push way harder in an online race. I have learned over the years that when I find myself wrecked and needing to catch up to the pack online, I can always have a better chance of doing so if I slow down…if that makes sense. Nowhere in the old saying of “slow in, fast out” is there room for "brake late, hard and slide through the corner to catch dude in front of me lol.
Also, I ve got PB in lobbys that I couldnt beat hotlapping.
Tire temps have a lot to do with it. Some multiplayer races are so darn short that your tires never heat up enough. When you run rivals, you usually run lots of laps and your tires are perfect after a few. It makes a difference.
Other than that, the only difference is the player. I run most of my times in lobbies and think the competition makes me faster than I am while hotlapping.
No offense to anyone having this problem but it’s not your cars it’s probably you. hear me out. when i build a car and tune it i never consider it a finished build until after ive raced it. im not talking about single race against drivatars either. when you race against actual people you subconciously push yourself harder then when you hotlap alone. when you push harder you push your car harder. when you push your car harder any flaws in the cars tune or build will come into play. the car may have felt perfect in test drive where you were alone and in your owne comfort zone at your owne comfortable pace. now in a hopper with 23 maniacs behind you going into turn 1 your car massively understeers or doesnt stop fast enough or doesnt have any grip not because of some glitch in the game but because you are out of your comfort zone. i suggest you build/tune your car. test drive it then when it feels good enough to race bring it to a hopper. if the car shows any bad habits go back and try to tune them out and race it again. repeat this process until the car is easy to handle not just in hotlap but when you are under pressure as well. sometimes the cars set up is fine and its completely the drivers inabilty to drive under the pressure i mentioned earlier. i know a guy who runs 7:36s in bclass on nurburgring but when we race against each other he can barely hit 38s 39s. im the complete opposite. i run 7:40 in hotlap and test drive but when i race i consistently run 7:37 with some 38s mixed in. some people crack under pressure while others are fine with it. moral of the story its not the game its either you or a flaw in the build/tune.
I struggled to get online yesterday. Kept getting disconnected from the server, games didn’t launch properly etc. When I did get into a race the cars were terrible but so it appeared were other people’s. Spins, running off track and so on. There was a lot of obvious lag so the performance was understandable but I suppose if you’re getting a small amount of lag or data loss then it’ll affect your inputs without necessarily affecting the games video.
I hear you all say it psychological and in part that can be true. I know the difference however. We have tested this in private lobbies running similar to test drive no one pushing anyone else just trying to get a clean laptime all driving the same car after running it in rivals and getting same feeling from the car ( looser car never tighter). Something is different. I say grip but it could be some other factor (tire physics, etc). I don’t suppose anyone from Turn10 even reads this board so getting an answer is unlikely. I invite you to try out my theory by testing under similar conditions.

I can do the same times anywhere, whether it be multiplayer, rivals or test drive. Nothing is different. You think differently for each mode. Rivals you want to get everything out of it, test driving you concentrate the tuning aspect and less on driving and on multiplayer you’re more worried about turn 1 lap 1 and afterwards.
Exactly this I have found zero difference between the different modes although I did have one evening where in rivals one of my tunes the tyres would over heat after literally 2 corners at COTA. However a reset did fix that.
To those stating they have tested it and are certain there is a difference may I suggest posting some evidence? With all the telemetry in game I would have thought of there was an issue it would be very easy to pinpoint where and post the evidence showing this. Just a suggestion of course.
From my experience it is a combination of the driver pushing harder and lag issues. It always seems like the “pause/fast forward” lag issue strikes right before a major turn.
is this evidence enough?
http://forums.forza.net/turn10_postst45211_Telemetry-data-on-replays.aspx
The video is only showing a difference in telemetry data between live gameplay and a replay of said live gameplay. That could quite easily be caused by the change from 60FPS live gameplay, to 30FPS during the replay, or it could be some other glitch.
I fail to see what that has to do with people believing there is a difference between single player handling and multiplayer handling? It isn’t even comparing single player to multiplayer!
When this issue was brought up in past forza games, I would have put it entirely down to perception, and people pushing harder for that win while racing against others. Not that there is an actual change in the handling between single player and multiplayer. With FM6 however, I would say that it could be down to some using mods in single player (active in free run, test drive, career). As we all know (and I am thankful for), mods can not be used online (rivals, hoppers, private rooms). So if someone has a car up to level 25 affinity, and they just happen to be using the wonderful mod card that comes with it. You know, the one that seriously increases grip levels (or any mod that improves handling). That would mean the handling of that car online wouldn’t be as good as in single player, and it would give people a harder time driving it than they are used too.
To the people that do not use mods in SP, then I still say the same as I always have done. There is no difference in handling between SP and MP, you just perceive there to be, as you are driving harder against other people.
In fact Slime can actually back me up here, since we have raced together online. Slime has also seen my hotlap lines from watching in rivals mode and the videos I post to youtube of my runs around the ring. They know the line I take when I am on my own, and they have seen me mess up those lines when they have been right behind me.
Slime is in the Orange M3, I am in the Silver one. They both have the exact same tune on them, and we was both using the xbox 360 control pad. This might be footage from FM4, but this argument between SP and MP handling has been going on for a long time with regards to Forza. Back to FM1 in fact. I have also seen the exact same debate with Assetto Corsa, Gran Turismo, even Pcars. What the video shows however, is that in a race situation I can seriously mess up my lines, even though I am in the lead. I am putting myself under pressure to keep that lead. And it also shows that Slime messes up their own lines, as they are pushing to keep up with me, as they wanted to take the lead from me. The roles can easily be reversed as well, with slime in front aiming to keep their lead, and me trying to take that lead from them. It is extra pressure we put ourselves under. Pressure I personally do not feel in single player at all, only in multiplayer.
Thanks for the post I’m abroad at the moment so cannot stream you tube on this backward connection I’m on - Any chance you can give a brief summary of what happens in the video?
If there really is a handling difference between online and the other modes then I really am surprised and I aplologise if I have been proven wrong.
Cool thanks for the clarification lalyrn
Lalyrn, I don’t use mods so that card is off the table so to speak. I don’t have any way to edit video or I would attempt to post an example. You can play online solo in a private lobby. Can one of you hot shots that can edit video test out my premise. Take a car that Is Not glitched and that is tuned snug to neutral. Run it in rivals mode with a ghost you can beat easily so your not chasing it and hot lap for some laps and look at your time and note the cars handling. Next start a private lobby on the same track. Enable 1 drivatar at the lowest skill level so you are not chasing it and the hot lap for some laps and note the cars handling. Did the car handle the same? When I do this exercise the car is always looser. For the record I run with all the assists off except the braking line and the auto clutch with manual shifting. I can usually get into the top 500 to 1000 so I am not a total nube.
If one of you can attempt it and post up the video I would appreciate it. I know that most of you saying there is no difference are better drivers than I am so your line and braking points will be more consistant than mine.
