I how before it was on the game everybody was crying cos its not on…now its on and great i don’t have any problems with it…people are complaining because they don’t like the new build of the track.
make your mind up!!
Its also only a game, if they did not make sticky grass, this thread would not be here but one saying “people cutting the grass on the RING is stupid… FIX IT”
Well, I know it can scan those tiny little details, but think about this. The game still has to render the model that is the ground, course, grass, all of that. It is a model just like the cars, however translating ALL of those little bumps and divots and imperfections to a 3D model would probably add more load to the machine it’ll be running on (in this case the XBOX One). Maybe it’s not just to make it easier to drive on (because I agree that the 'Ring in Forza 5 is way smoother than the real thing, but I still love it) but also to cut down on taxing hardware resources? How bad would it be to have the 'Ring like everybody wanted, but it cause some frame lag? Just my two cents as a former dev on a PC game project. Then again, I could be wrong and it’s all a marketing ploy. Who knows? One could easily argue both.
Right, it could be down to 6mm or whatever for dimension in the game, such as track width, corner shape, minor changes in corner sharpness, and the more noticeable bumps, but to actually sit there and model in every little bump and imperfection (and I’m not talking about the textures overlaid to give it color, I’m talking the physical model) has to be pretty up there in load.
Although I am not going to debate the accuracy of any one of the game’s tracks with folks in this thread who have either claimed to have been to the tracks or are just making accusationss for the fun of it, I will say that it appears you have missed the point of laser scanning. Whether it be for cars, tracks, buildings, or people, laser scanning is a feature that allows developers to recoup the time previously needed to create replications of surface textures and other characteristics (e.g. - bumps, curves, angles, etc.) through a process that captures data regarding an object and, in turn, recreates its exact - or fairly close to exact - proportions with a graphical model. At that point, the data can be imported into a videogame rendering engine to simulate a surface, or whatever the object may be, in which textures can be laid onto the accurately framed model.
Laser scanning in racing games began with vehicles for this very reason. Whereas before automobiles were recreated through manmade measurements and models were built by hand, laser scanning offers the designers surety that the in-game representations are as close to exact as possible, as seen here.
Again, whether Turn 10 has smoothed out some of the perceived bumps as some have claimed, is debatable. Only the developers truly know if that it is the case or if this is just a perception caused by the fact that these road surfaces are being experienced through a videogame console which doesn’t allow the data to be entirely portrayed or interpreted through the game’s controls. Either way, laser scanning exists for the purposes stated above and suggesting that the load of work required to employ laser scanned data is “pretty up there”, when compared to hand modeling, would be inaccurate.
I’m not debating the work load, so I think I must’ve been unclear, and I apologize for the misunderstanding. I know it’s faster, and that was not what I was getting at. What I meant was the load on the hardware of the console. Wasn’t really trying to pick a side either, just trying to point out another POSSIBILITY as to why it seems “smoother”.
Another point I’d like to add is this: 6mm is a pretty large measurement in terms of road surface deviations. The “within 6mm” claim may come from removing the small bumps and undulations that are present on the real track and absent on it’s virtual recreation. On a note, I really can’t judge the “realism” of the sticky grass phenomenon, since the only times I’ve driven on grass I was going less than 10mph. If someone has a powerful car they’d like to lend me and a racetrack with grass on it they can get me onto, I’d be happy to test the accuracy of the phenomenon. But, just in case, I think I’d like a helmet, 5-point racing harness and a full rollcage just to be on the safe side.
Who said that theses scans where perfect? They are just more accurate that the past games. I want to find out if Turn 10 will make improvement touches to the feel of the tracks in the next Forza. Maybe not.
This is one of those threads where communication with and from T10 would come in handy, They said they were looking into communication with the fans on here months ago did we ever get an update?
The starting point in FM5 is also where official timed laps are started, be it from manufacturers or automotive journalists.
As far as the other stuff, remember, it’s just a game, albeit a fairly realistic one. Have fun with it. Endless scrutiny leads to a bunch of wasted energy. Take it for what it is and enjoy the game.
Of course, constructive criticism is always good but there’s a point when it becomes akin to beating a dead horse.
This is so true. Using the controller feels so numb because the left stick does not react to bumps. You can basicly go down the straight and not notice dips and camber on the track. The forcefeed back will shake and move the steering with a wheel.
I just had a track day on the Nordschleife this friday and have around 50 laps on this track.
I can tell that the representation in Forza is really very very good and lifelike. There are some imperfections regarding the scenery outside of the
track, especially around famous Bruennchen but the track itself is good which is more important.
Trackwise what I discovered was, although laserscanned, the curb height in some places are overdone in Forza.
Examples are the right curb exit Hatzenbach to Hocheichen which almost makes you loose your car in Forza, also the left curb at Bruennchen is similar but not that bad.
In real life you can use the curbs in that places with your car as they are almost flat.
But again the best representation I have seen in a game so far.
One thing regarding the bumps: problem is that every winter the Nordschleife gets updated asphalt in some segments so you get new bumps or older ones which aren’t existing anymore. Therefore It is really difficult to be up to date in the game with this.
I love the track. The only problems with the track I find are not the track but the bad drivers that all just want to win. I have seen people doing stupid things and ramming off the track just to gain a position as with all the tracks.
If I start in a good position I try to get as far up the grid as possible. If I start at the back I try to move forward but hang back for the people who think winning is getting first place at the first corner. Don’t blame the track blame the bad drivers is what I’m trying to say.
The one by the pits is the true starting line for the Nordschleife, but the one on the straight on Forza 4 is actually the starting line for what is sometimes referred to as the Behemoth, which is the entire Nurburgring circuit, including most of GP before entering back onto the Nordschleife section.
Try racing the last corner on Sebring with a controller and with a wheel or relatively pricey set up. It feels completely different. In the end, the controllers are relatively inexpensive and there is only so much you can do to translate everything you feel and use in a real world setting to aid in driving through a tiny controller and your hands. When driving you feel things with your butt, your back, your legs, you ears and so on while in Forza all you have is a small contact patch between your palms, fingertips, and a controller.
As for the original topic of this thread: starting points in FM5 were (on some tracks) moved to more accurately represent starting points (or changes to) in the real world. The starting point on the ring is what is used for timed laps and manufacturer runs and sure it’s a great starting point. The beauty of the power of the Xbox One, and the fact that this is a video game, i shouldn’t be too difficult to add a new ribbon with a different starting point or feature.
The game has Road America and Road America Alternate which is what, a hundred meters different through one corner, so why shouldn’t it have Nurburgring official and Nurburgring Touristfare options…
