It is quite distracting that the in-cockpit steering wheel and arms animation never matches my real steering wheel.
I suggest we simply have an option for showing the virtual wheel 1:1 to the real steering wheel - no smoothing, no clamping, no added vibrations, honest 1 degree = 1 degree animation. I understand the arms can be hard to animate beyond ±90 degrees, so it is ok to not render the arms. The other option would be to not render the wheel and arms altogether.
I use the dash cam for this exact reason. Besides I don’t need to look at my wheel and the in game wheel. However I do agree that realistic animations definitely don’t hurt anything
Or a setting to hide the driver arms and just let the steering wheel do more than 180 degrees side-to-side. I know they want us to see our driver gear but if I have to choose I’ll take invisible driver every time if it makes the steering wheel match what I’m doing and have a working rear-view mirror. I’m fine seeing my virtual fireproof racing overalls only on the menus and during the loading and post-race screens. Oh, I don’t like the hood view.
If you use a wheel, why on earth would you drive looking at a second wheel? That’s why there’s a cockpit view without the wheel. It’s for wheel users and it’s way more realistic while driving. Looking at a second wheel way ahead of you makes it seem as if you’re a kid in the back seat with a fake wheel pretending to steer. lol
I DEFINITELY agree they need to work on a better hand animation that does a full 1080 degrees of rotation, and you shouldn’t have to use a dash cam. Everybody telling you to use the dash cam has been saying that for years, and for years people have continued to complain about it. I’ve got a better solution… Just fix the damn hand animations so that people aren’t forced to use the dash cam. I don’t want to use the dash cam. I don’t like it. I don’t sit on the dash board when I drive a car. It’s a weird perspective, because it works in some ways, and doesn’t in others. Every other game solves this problem by using a hand animation that looks normal. I know… rocket science.
Also a fleshed out hot lap feature would be super nice at this point. Props to turn10/microsoft for doing this and actually listening to people. I have some confidence restored after this update. I guess it helps that I had no idea it was coming. Pleasant surprise.
I think this is a perfectly fair request - if other developers can do this, why can’t Turn10? Rather than saying “use a different view”, we should put weight behind this request. I doubt if anyone will complain about having proper wheel rotation (according to real car’s values) and gear shift animation. It is very much a critical aspect of the entire cockpit experience.
For all people saying to use the dashcam instead, there is a lot more immersion with traditional cockpit view than the dashcam. Actually when you are playing you are NOT looking at your real wheel, you are looking at the screen.
That makes no sense. You aren’t supposed to stare at your wheel when you drive. You do that in real life? How is there more immersion by feeling like your in the back seat of a car with a second wheel? There’s WAY more of a realistic feel with the wheelless camera and the screen close to you. Driving so far away from the dash you’re almost in the back seat plus double wheels and double hands are in no way realistic or immersive. It’s why it’s the view sim racers use and why it’s present in every actual sim game.
I play with cockpit cam with a controller and use the animated wheel to have a clue more or less where the car weight is, which helps immensely – while in most Rivals I turn 1% time with cockpit cam, if I go dash and mainly chase cam I perform waaaay worse, with chase I’m little more than a complete noob. So if the rotation was full I’d be pretty much in dire straits. For the gear changes animation, I agree it’s a very must thing to solve (together with the bug of the 911s where the front just lifts from the ground when on throttle), it’s awkward to drive a 1950s F1 car and the hand doesn’t leave the wheel to change gears. But back to the topic, I think the animation of the wheel should be a choice between proper animation and the way it is now, I think it could please everyone.
Honestly, damn, I think that there should be even a thing (animation or bar) in the HUD from chase cam which shows how much the wheel is turning in percentage of the total lock, it would be just perfect and I believe easy thing to do.
I do think that the steering animation should be improved. Even 360° of animation rotation would be a huge improvement. However, I think position of view & field of view adjustability is much more important as of now.
100% agree on that - the FOV in the game is too zoomed out and makes objects look a lot smaller then they should be. It’s almost like a fish-eye view, especially in hood and bumper. Rather than the FOV effects, such as the world zooming out with more speed, I’d rather they give us FOV adjustment options and use other effects to heighten the sense of speed; such as peripheral blur, motion blur, shaking, a bumper cam which actually sits superlow on the bumper - I think the first FM game on the debut Xbox did that with the bumper cam.
