Need help with driving

Hello,

I recently bought FM7. I’ve been swerving all over the place, crashing into walls and so on in the game. I’ve been practicing and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong and/or should be doing. I would like help and advice to become better.

Next race you do save the replay for it, then share it. Once you get that done post here of what the replay title is so that we can watch it and see how you race.

Thanks for the reply. Alright, then. The title is “19/09/2019 FM7” (without the quotation marks).

So I’ve noticed you’re using automatic, are you using the driving line too? You’re going way too fast into those corners. The F50 handles good, but not that good. Try braking earlier. You also either have the brakes on full, or the gas on full. Ease on to the gas coming out of corners and let the car roll through long corners without either input. Maybe just to a hint of gas in long corners; more if the car is turning too sharp, less if car is not turning enough. Never sudden lift. That’ll help so you’re not going wide throughout the whole turn. In general, be smoother with a lot of the inputs. Practice helps a lot, but I wouldn’t practice on Dubai. There’s a lot of radius changing curves with blind spots all over the place and not many noticeable braking markers. What camera angle are you using?

(Not related to you) Also I’ve noticed the race shop change menu lock up also affects replays.

Corners: slow in fast out. It’s often better to go into corner at high revs in low gear than other way around. You get better drive out the corner and more control over speed-means less chance of overdoing the speed through corner. On most cars, like F50, hard acceleration in corner with wheels turned will lose you time or put you into a wall. Be patient with the throttle. I agree with coasting through some corners. No input means car will go through a corner shedding some speed while you can control it easier. Then wait for the right time to get back on the throttle. Remember to be gentle with it. And above all smooth steering inpust to not unsettle the car by shifting its balance. I know it’s a lot to think about but with practice it’ll become a second nature.
Are you using a wheel? I’d recommend it. Some guys are faster with controller but for me a wheel gives the game so much more realism and makes it easier - at least in my case. Start with an easier track. Hockenheim is a good track. And a slower car. Audi RS3 LMS (or S3, can’t remember) is a good, easy, FWD car. It’s S division but nice and easy to drive. Or perhaps go for A or B. Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale is a great car. Fast but stable with nice handling. And forgiving.

I have this one word for you -----------> Driver61

Watch the youtube how to videos, practice the techniques, and enjoy seeing seconds drop from your lap time. Even though it’s the real deal, In my experience it does translate directly to sim driving. Have fun!

Thank you all for the advice and help. I’m taking it all on board.

I’m using the braking line.

Close chase.

No.

I have a question. If I become good at FM7, will that translate into being good at FH4? Because I’ve been thinking of buying that game as well.

Yes, getting good at any game or simulator that’s relatively realistic will help in most other driving games. You’ll learn techniques and basic car control that you can carry over into other titles.

I haven’t seen your video, but take a 1/2 lb out of the front tires and stiffen the suspension a bit (that will prevent a little over steer and keep things a tad more stable). Pick a decent lower class car (the S & R are too fast to control when you can’t drive yet). I like my Civic FE (But not sure if you can buy it. Maybe in auction). As someone else said, pick an easy track. Maple Valley and Dubai are my favorites (maple valley is easier and the Forza Edition Civic gives you extra $). Brake as soon as you hit the yellow on the driving line and take the turn slow (if you tires are screeching, you’re going to fast). Also try to move the stick a little less if you can when you try to correct a swerve (I know that’s tough). Once you get a little better, go to manual shifting. I waited too long before trying it (tried it in older games and could never get the hang of it). Picked it up pretty fast in FM7 and shaved quite a bit of time of lap times. Downshifting helps you brake and up shifting is quicker (I haven’t tried the clutch yet, but others say it’s even faster).

As for as Horizon 4, I find the driving is actually a little easier in the Horizon games. For those, going off the road doesn’t mess you up. It’s more like of an open world arcade game and not a racing simulator. You can fly through the woods and jump around. For going around corners a little braking and a nice slide keeps you at full throttle. I keep those games on automatic tranny because I am sliding around so much and it just gets a little hectic when trying to shift at the same time (you get points for drifts, jumps, hitting things). They really are totally different games, so if you really like the driving games, it’s one you may want to get.

I have a new replay to show you guys. It’s titled “23/09/2019 FM7” (without the quotation marks). I’d like for you to see my improvement.
