My UI Feedback

For me one of the huge things ports always get wrong is UI. For the most part you guys have done a pretty good job and I am happy with it. There are a few small things I’m not a fan off.

  1. The biggest issue for me is having to hit buttons on the keyboard or controller to access certain parts. An example is your paint menu. I have to hit a physical button for free look and a physical button to edit the color for the special paints. There should always be a UI button for this, button shortcuts are ok, But when designing UI for a mouse there should ALWAYS be something left clickable. It can become very confusing otherwise and just feels inconsistent.
    Edit: I guess the button references are click-able I suggesting making them look more like buttons. Right now they just feel like they are only there to show you what keys do what. Most PC people aren’t going to see them as UI buttons as its really only console games that do that.

  2. The graphics menu. When you have your mouse over an option and you scroll it changes the option. This is a good idea, but it just clashes with instinct. When you use the scroll wheel you expect the menu to shift up or down. Its natural to me to scroll down in graphics options to see if I miss anything. In Forza there isn’t anything to scroll to (A good thing) but its still something I do anyway and everytime I do I screw up my options. My friends all do the same thing. Great idea, but in practice its just annoying and clashes with how people excpect the scroll wheel to work.

  3. Tour menu. I should be able to start the race by clicking on the big picture. Or maybe just some big button. Something like the Let’s Race button in the free play menu would work too. Like my #1 point just it feels weird to have to hit enter. Same with tracks in the free play section and cars in the car select.
    Edit: Even after I know I can click the references but it still doesn’t feel right.

  4. I suggest having space be also select for the menus. Its easier to hit with your left hand.

  5. For the fine color control in the paint menu make the arrows underneath the bars drag-able. The actual color bar is fine when left click but it feels like I should be dragging the arrow instead.

  6. For things like the tunning menu the sections should change when I scroll without the need to move my mouse up to the sections themselves. Escpecially since scrolling on the actual adjustments doesn’t adjust them.

  7. The orange UNLOCK EARLY UIelement should be clickable it was the first thing I tried to do to when unlocking a car.

These things aren’t the end of the world I guess but they will go a long way in making the UI enjoyable and intuitive to people used to UI designed for a mouse. Thanks for your time if you do read this.
