I tried building a newer car also as I saw that it was what the OP asked about. '87 Trans Am, same build style. 1st on Lakehurst Rush against unbeatable, 02:28.749, made many mistakes. The car was much more difficult to drive because it has thinner rear tires but it’s still competetive. I uploaded the tune and named it the same as for the AMC. I can post the numbers here if OP is interested.
Well Trans AM 87 is great. First tune and 2:20.975. Suspension tuning changes a lot im this car
That’s 7 seconds gap on 2 minutes lap, that’s a lot. Gonna try this race with my Trans AM 87" and post some times.
I’ve tried sport tire compund. IT helps a lot. I was always using stock tires or rally tires. You just cant put power down on stock tires. Sports are really helping the car to behave on corners

Nod. Not in game now, but had been doing tuning and play without the engine swapped and no aero build. Tricky car with original engine.
Original engine, no aero, sport tires, NA tune was having trouble getting down to 2:30. Had to swap race trans to break that.
It highlights something that really grrs me when trying to simulation build. When upgrading parts just shifts the curve higher. How camshafts just give more redline without moving torque curve. RPM increase on the GTA stock engine, even supercharger was pretty poor. With default 4speed, you are always off the power curve badly. The race trans helped to get it into the 20s at least.
Tonight planning on pulling off the cams, see what happens, but it looked like building up the original engine is a PI dump. Going back to four speed, dropping rpms should give me a good PI influx. With that, probably supercharger for better gains in the power curve or potentially just go gocart and race tires.
Tried Pontiac Trans Am SD-445. First run was 2:20.1xx without tune. Corvette C5 first build 2:24, second build 2:21 both wihtout tune
